Flat Roof
Definition:
• *Roof that gradient / slope less than 10°
Lecture 7
Major Components
Flat Roof • Structure
• Roofing
• Insulation system

Flat Roof: Structure Timber Flat Roof

Material for structure:
• Timber
• Concrete
• Steel

The construction of flat roof structure is

similar to floor construction

Roofing Insulation System

• 3 Types: • Can be installed either :
• Single sheet material – Above the roof deck or
– metal sheet – Below the roof deck
• Multiple layer material • Material:
– Bituminous felt – Glass fibre wool
• Monolithic material – Low density PVC board
– Asphalt layer
– Light weight cement screed
– Water proof cement render

Roofing: Single Sheet Material (Metal

Insulation System
Sheet)
• Normally for small span timber flat roof
• Lead, copper, aluminium and zinc
• Laid on a layer of felt (underlay)
• Wooden rolls – nail to the deck parallel to the
direction of fall

Roofing: Multiple Layer Material Built-up felt roofing

• Built-up felt roofing
1st layer of felt
• Suitable for any type of decking
• Available in rolls – 1m width, 10/20/30m 2nd layer of felt Timber deck
length
• 1st layer - Laid on deck – nailed or bonded to
the deck with hot bitumen 3rd layer of felt
• Side lap 75mm. End lap 50mm
• 2nd and 3rd layer laid on the 1st layer and Bitumen layer
bonded with hot bitumen
Stone chippings

• When used on concrete slab – need vapour
barrier (avoid blistering)
• Protection on top of the felt – layer of stone
chippings bedded in bitumen

Roofing: Monolithic material Roofing: Monolithic material

• Mastic asphalt • Suitable for most roof decking
• Mixture of bitumen + aggregate – Structure must be strong enough
• Bitumen – black water-resisting material – Slope not less than 1:80
which softens when heated and is derived • Isolating membrane / sheathing felt
either naturally or from the distillation of
petroleum • Mastic asphalt – heated (until soft)
• Aggregate – limestone / bitumen treated • Apply on the sheathing felt – wood float
limestone (asphalt rock) (wooden trowel)
• In two coats – 10mm thick each
• Layer of protective stone chippings

Roofing: Monolithic material Mastic asphalt on timber deck

• On concrete slab – vapour barrier is needed
