13.

Design the interior panel of a flat slab 6 m × 8 m in size for a super imposed load of 5
kN/m2. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe415 steel.

Given:
Size of the panel = 6m x 8 m

Live load (Assume) = 4 kN/m2

Floor Finish (Assume) = 1 kN/m2

Grade of concrete(fck)= 20 N/mm2

Grade of steel (fy ) = 415N/mm2

Effective span of a panel in X-axis (lx) = 6000 mm

Effective span of a panel in Y-axis (ly) = 8000 mm

Solution:
Step 1 : Dimensioning of Flat Slab :

(a) Thickness of Flat slab:

X - axis Y - axis

𝑑𝑥 = 166.67 mm 𝑑𝑦 = 222.22 𝑚𝑚

Provide d = 230 mm, Assume Effective cover (d’) to be 30 mm,

Then Overall depth (D) = d + d’ = 230 + 30 D = 260 mm

(b) Column Strip:

X - axis Y - axis

Width of Column Strip = 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 𝑳𝟐 ≯ 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 𝑳𝟏 Width of Column Strip = 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 𝑳𝟐 ≯ 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 𝑳𝟏

𝑙1 = 6 m and 𝑙2 = 8 m 𝑙1 = 8 m and 𝑙2 = 6 m

Width of Column Strip = 0.25 ∗ 8 ≯ 0.25 ∗ 6 Width of Column Strip = 0.25 ∗ 6 ≯ 0.25 ∗ 8
Width of Column Strip = 2 ≯ 1.5 Width of Column Strip = 1.5 ≯ 2

Width of Column Strip = 1. 5 on Each side Width of Column Strip = 2 on Each side

Total Width of Column Strip = 3m Total Width of Column Strip = 4 m

(c) Middle Strip:

X - axis Y - axis

Width of Middle Strip = Lx – Width of Column strip Width of Middle Strip = Ly – Width of Column strip

Width of Middle Strip = 6 – 3 Width of Middle Strip = 8 - 4

Width of Middle Strip = 3 m Width of Middle Strip = 4 m

Step 2 : Load Calculation :

Self-weight of flat slab = 1 * 1 * 0.26 * 25 = 6.5 kN/m2

Live load on the Flat slab = (Assume) = 4 kN/m2

Floor finish = (Assume) = 1 kN/m2

Total load on Flat slab (w) = = 11.5 kN/m2

Factored Load (wu) = 1.5 * 11.5 = 17.25 kN/m2

Step 3 : Ultimate Bending Moment:

𝐿2 = 8 m and 𝐿𝑛 = 6-0.3 =5.7 m 𝐿2 = 6 m and 𝐿𝑛 = 8-0.4 = 7.6 m

W = 17.25 * 8 * 5.7 = 786.6 kN W = 17.25 * 6 * 7.6 = 786.6 kN

Step 4 : Check for Thickness of slab :

𝑴𝒖 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟑𝟖 𝒇𝒄𝒌 𝒃 𝒅𝟐

𝐀𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐗 − 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐬:

At Column Strip At Middle Strip

366.16 x 106 = 0.138 ∗ 20 ∗ 3000 ∗ d2 112.09 x 106 = 0.138 ∗ 20 ∗ 3000 ∗ d2

d = 210 mm < 230 mm d = 116.35 mm < 170 mm

𝐀𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐘 − 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐬:

366.16 x 106 = 0.138 ∗ 20 ∗ 4000 ∗ d2 112.09 x 106 = 0.138 ∗ 20 ∗ 4000 ∗ d2

d = 182 mm < 230 mm d = 101 mm < 230 mm

Depth provided is safe

Step 6 : Check for Shear in Flat Slab:

❖ The critical section for two-way shear happens at a distance of “d/2” from face of the support

X - axis Y - axis
Size of Critical section for two-way shear, Size of Critical section for two-way shear,

Shear on Critical Section (Vu) = Shear on whole footing – Shear at center
= (17.25 * 6 * 8) – (17.25 * 0.53 * 0.73)
Vu = 821.32 kN
Shear force per meter width of the perimeter,

𝐕𝐮 821.32∗1000
𝐕𝐮 = = = 326 kN/m
𝟐(𝐁+𝐃) 2(0.53+0.73)

𝑽𝒖 326∗1000
Actual Shear stress, 𝝉𝒗 = =
𝒃𝒅 1000∗230
𝜏𝑣 = 1.10 N/mm2
Permissible Shear stress, 𝝉𝒗 = 𝑲𝒔 𝝉𝒄 As per Cl 31.6.3.1, Pg – 58 – IS 456

𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏 300

𝑲𝒔 = 𝟎. 𝟓 + 𝜷𝒄 ≯ 1 𝜷𝒄 = = = 0.75
𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏 400

K s = 0.5 + 0.75 = 1.25 > 1 Hence Ks = 1

𝝉𝒄 = 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓 √𝒇𝒄𝒌 = 0.25 * √20 τc = 1.12 N/mm2

Permissible Shear stress, 𝝉𝒗 = 𝑲𝒔 𝝉𝒄 = 1 * 1.12 = 1.12 N/mm2
1.10 < 1.25
Actual shear stress < Permissible shear stress
Hence the design is safe in shear

Step 6 : Design of Main Reinforcement :

(a) At Column Strip: (Negative Moment)

𝒇𝒚 𝑨𝒔𝒕
𝑴𝒖 = 𝟎. 𝟖𝟕 𝒇𝒚 𝑨𝒔𝒕 𝒅 [𝟏 − ]
𝒃 𝒅 𝒇𝒄𝒌

366.16 x 106 = 0.87 * 415 * Ast * 230 * [1 − ]
3000∗230∗20

366.16 x 106 = 83041.5 * Ast * [1 − 3 x 10−5 Ast ]

366.16 x 106 = 83041.5 Ast - 2.5 𝐴𝑠𝑡 2

2.5 𝐴𝑠𝑡 2 – 83041.5 Ast + 366.16 x 106 = 0

By Solving, Ast = 5232.82 mm2

Ast per m length = 5232.82/3 = 1744.27 mm2

From SP 16 , Provide 12 mm ø bars @ 60 mm c/c for negative moment

(b) At Column Strip: (Positive Moment)

415∗ Ast
156.93 x 106 = 0.87 * 415 * Ast * 230 * [1 − ]
3000∗230∗20

2.5 𝐴𝑠𝑡 2 – 83041.5 Ast + 156.93 x 106 = 0

By Solving, Ast = 2011.5 mm2

Ast per m length = 2011.5/3 = 670.5 mm2

From SP 16 , Provide 12 mm ø bars @ 160 mm c/c for positive moment

(c) At Middle Strip: (Negative and Positive Moment)

𝒇𝒚 𝑨𝒔𝒕
𝑴𝒖 = 𝟎. 𝟖𝟕 𝒇𝒚 𝑨𝒔𝒕 𝒅 [𝟏 − ]
𝒃 𝒅 𝒇𝒄𝒌
415∗ Ast
112.09 x 106 = 0.87 * 415 * Ast * 230 * [1 − ]
3000∗230∗20

2.5 𝐴𝑠𝑡 2 – 83041.5 Ast + 112.09 x 106 = 0

By Solving, Ast = 1409.55 mm2

Ast per m length = 1409.55/3 = 469.85 mm2

From SP 16 ,

Provide 12 mm ø bars @ 230 mm c/c at middle strip for positive and negative moment
