GRAPHIC DESIGN COURSE

Graphic Design Theory

Graphic design is the art or skill of combing text and pictures
in advertisement, magazine or books.
Graphic is about “visual”, that is art, imagination and
expression. Involving many mediums such as drawing, painting,
engraving or lettering giving clear and explicit details.
Visual Elements of Graphic Design
 Line
 Color
 Shape
 Texture
 Form
 Typography
Design is to decide upon the look and function of something
before it’s made. This include thinking, problem solving and
practicality.
In graphic design, there are rules that can be considered. These
rules are called Principles of design.
Key Principles of Design
 Contrast
 Hierarchy
 Alignment
 Balance
 Proximity
 Repetition
 Simplicity
 Function
Graphic Design is the organization and presentation of
information developed through a creative process for a particular
function.
 Graphic Design Jobs
 Adverstising
 Branding
 Web Design
 Interface design
 Magazine Layout
 Paper Engineering and Packaging
 TV/Motion graphics
 Infographics
 Signage
 Art and Installation
 Digital arts
The power of graphic design to influence, inform and instruct on
the commercial level can also be used to educate and inspire our
generation. Graphic design is the unity of two opposing forces;
artistic expression and practical application design theory. By
joining these two forces in harmony, we can make a great visual
communication.

Line
Line is the first key among visual elements in graphic design.
This is the crucial elements of design. Lines can be used to add
structure to a composition, to frame information and to divide
information.
Used considerately line can add elegance to composition, add
hierarchy and to draw the eye to a specific point.
Colors
Color Theory is one of the basic foundation of Graphic Design.

Shapes

In design ‘Shapes’ have two dimensions and are measured by their

height and width.
Shapes are defined by boundaries, such as a lines or color and
can also be created with negative space.
Geometric shapes are shapes that can be drawn by a ruler or
compass and have a feeling of control or order, while organic
shapes are shapes that can be seen in nature or can be drawn
freely.
However simple or complex it's this relationship between shapes
that can trigger feelings, convey messages, engage an audience,
add emphasis to a portion of layout and create movement.
Famous brand logos are made up of organic and geometric shapes,
some are purely organic or geometric, and some are combination of
these.
Letter R is a composition of organic and
geometric shapes. We all know that this shape
has a meaning, that this is letter R, the 18th
letter of the English alphabet. But if we
will combine this letter with another letter,
or with a group of letter, this shape will
convey a different meaning.

Take a look on our examples above. These are the images that are
created from the combination of different shapes. If we will
scatter each shape of one of these images, it will surely destroy
its meaning. In this case, proximity is very important when it
comes to the combination of shapes to draw a certain meaning.
Shape is the foundation of any composition. It is how they are
arranged that determines the visual outcome.
Texture
Texture is a way that a surface can be felt or perceived to feel.
It also creates a visual tone and can influence the looks and
feel of a design.
There are two types of texture:
Image texture
Comes from the combination of organic and geometric shapes,
sometimes random to create a particular field. It tantalizes the
texture and triggers emotion and senses. Image texture can be
environmental, biological, or man-made.

Because of the abstract nature of image texture that it can

trigger emotion, feeling and senses, image texture can be
combined to a piece of graphic design work.

Pattern texture
Pattern texture is generated from organic and geometric shapes.
Repeating information of shapes and color to convey a meaningful
design. Unlike the image texture, pattern texture is more
structured and it is mostly manufactured. It also tantalizes the
senses but in a very different way since it targets visual senses
rather than emotional senses. Unlike image texture, it is less
abstract.
Pattern texture is mostly being used in branding. Brands are
using repetitive shapes to create a decoration and emphasize the
brand, making the consumers to remember their brand. Take a look
on gift wrapping paper. Gift wrappers are generally printed with
repetitive shapes or images, because the repetition of bright
colors and exciting images excites the visual senses, especially
if the gift was placed in a very enticing environment like the
Christmas tree.
