Micro Teaching
Micro teaching is a device which provides trainee and experienced teachers alike new
opportunities to improve teaching. Basically, it’s the delivery of a short session/lesson to
learners that should be about 15-30 minutes . Micro teaching helps teachers improve both
content and methods of teaching and, develops specific teaching skills so as to help the students
to grasp the concepts of a subject area better.
Micro teaching is very important , because it aims at reducing the difficulties that may exist in
small classes, develop confidence and student-teacher relations, it trains you to teach in a short
period of time, give immediate responses in order for students to be able to change their
attitude/behaviour, to utilize the academic potential of the trainee teacher and, to encourage
research of new teaching skills / strategies.
Any micro teaching lesson must have certain characteristics these are: microelement - is an
innovative scaled down teaching technique in teaching which is a process of subjecting samples
of human behaviour to the five R’s: recording, reviewing, responding, refining and redoing.
Some other characteristics are: teaching skills and teaching strategies, safe practice ground, the
teaching model and the research laboratory.
Micro teaching lessons should have an introduction, development and conclusion. The basic
principles of micro teaching are: -
Enforcement - is where the teacher ensures that the students would have done what they were
instructed.
Practice and drill -the students would have put what they would have learnt into practice and
after they would have practiced, the teacher would drill them to see how much they would have
learnt.
Microscopic supervision - the supervisor sees through the lesson and all the important points,
paying full attention to one point at a time and evaluation.
Micro teaching has 9 steps which needs to be taken into consideration. Some advantages are: it
helps to boost your confidence, improves attitude, promotes systematic lesson planning and it
helps in mastering skills. Disadvantages of micro teaching are: it hampers creativity because of
the limited time frame that the teacher has to work with, it is not feasible and it’s costly and
requires more skills.
I conclude by saying that micro teaching is very important. When done correctly, its beneficial
to both teachers and students and should be incooperated daily.
