B. DESIGN OF GLAZING THICKNESS (PANEL P1) -
MATERIAL DATA
Strength of glass in compression = 1000 N/mm2
Elastic Modulus E of Glass = 70000 N/mm2
Strength of glass in tension = 41.0 N/mm2
Allowable bending stress for tempered glass = 50.0 MPa

Long Edge dimension, a = 3200 mm

Short Edge dimension, b = 1000 mm
Aspect ratio a/b = 3.20
2
Uniform Loading, q= 3.68 KN/m
C.2. Aspect Ratio, a/b =
a

(From Book Roark's Formula for stress and Strain)

At centre of panel,
Maximum bending stress, ϭ =(ß.q.b^2)/t^2, where t is the thickness of glass,

Maximum deflection, y = (α.q.b^4)/(E/t^3), where t is the thickness of glass & ß, α are given in the following table
for various aspect ratios.
TABLE 11.4 - CASE 1.

From Table,
ß= 0.51
α= 0.1
tb = allowable thickness due to bending stress

td =
allowable thickness due at an allowable deflection of shorter span/60.
Therefore,
2 1/2
tb = (ß.q.b /ϭ) = 6.13 mm 11.57
3 1/3
td = (α.q.b /E/100) = 8.07 mm 11.33

Glass composition is 8mm Tempered + 1.52 PVB Interlayer + 8mm Tempered

EFFECTIVE THICKNESS FOR DEFLECTION
Using IStruE(APPENDIX 3) , effective thickness hef;w with respect to variable actions:

where,
hk = Thickness of plies within a laminated sheet
hm;k = distance of mid-plane of the glass plies
w= Coefficient of shear transfer of PVB (Family 2) = 0.3
hk = 8 mm 8
hm;k = 4.76 mm 4.76
Therefore,
hef,w = 11.33 mm > td

EFFECTIVE THICKNESS FOR BENDING STRESS

Using IStruE(APPENDIX 3) , effective thickness hef;j for bending stress:

hef;J = 11.57 mm > tb

Therefore, 8mm Tempered + 1.52 PVB Interlayer + 8mm Tempered OK
