ABSTRACT
This project aims to create a electromagnetic braking system model capable of applying brakes
without any friction loss and without losing the energy supplied. It uses a two electromagnets which
runs by the supply of power from the circuit. Also, there is a wheel which is attached to the motor so
when the power the supplied, by the help of motor the wheel rotates. Then a fan is attached near
electromagnets to cool the electromagnets from excessive heating. A metal bar is in the vicinity of
the electromagnets and wheel so when the electromagnets produces eddy currents which stops the
rotating wheel or rotor. This model helps in a way to be a used a retardation equipment in vehicles.
1.Background:
Electromagnetic brakes (also called electro-mechanical brakes or EM brakes) slow or
stop motion using electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance (friction). The original name
was "electro-mechanical brakes" but over the years the name changed to "electromagnetic brakes",
referring to their actuation method. Since becoming popular in the mid-20th century especially in
trains and trams, the variety of applications and brake designs has increased dramatically, but the
basic operation remains the same. Electromagnetic brakes are the brakes working on the electric
power & magnetic power. They works on the principle of electromagnetism. These brakes are an
excellent replacement on the convectional brakes due to their many advantages. The reason for
implementing this brake in automobiles is to reduce wear in brakes as it frictionless.
Electromagnetic brakes are of today’s automobiles.
The working principle of this system is that when the magnetic flux passes through and
perpendicular to the rotating wheel the eddy current flows opposite to the rotating wheel/rotor
direction. This eddy current trying to stop the rotating wheel or rotor. This results in the rotating
wheel or rotor comes to rest.
2.Motivation:
3.Problem Definition:
1.The conventional brake system consists of a lot of moving parts and is based on the principle of
friction thus a lot of forces dissipated in the form of heat due to friction and the links involved.
2.Disc brakes work using the same basic principle as the brakes on a bicycle: as the caliper pinches
the wheel with pads on both sides, it slows the vehicle.
3.Drum brakes consist of a heavy flat-topped cylinder, which is sandwiched between the wheel rim
and the wheel hub. The inside surface of the drum is acted upon by the linings of the brake shoes.
4.Air brakes use standard hydraulic brake system components such as braking lines, wheel cylinders
and a slave cylinder similar to a master cylinder to transmit the air-pressure-produced braking
energy to the wheel brakes.
5.All the above mentioned convectional brakes have two chief problems one is the wear and tear
and other is unnecessary excessive temperature in the service is attained. Excessive heating of
brakes can result in fade, it causes temporary changes in the friction as they get hotter. Normally
efficiency is regained when they cool again Brake pads and linings also wear away faster at higher
temperature
4.Scope:
A revolutionary invention is made in the field of brakes. The Electromagnetic brakes are excellent
replacement for conventional automobile brakes. The use of Electromagnetic brakes can be done for
lighter vehicles also. With some modification, a regenerative braking system can be equipped with
the Electromagnetic brakes. The Electromagnetic brakes are the future of automobile brakes.
5.Objectives:
The main objective of this project are:
1.To develop an Intelligent Braking System for Automobiles
2.To find the braking distance at various vehicle speeds as well as minimum distance before collision
