Food security: Why is biodiversity important?

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The concept of ‘biodiverse multi-functional landscapes.’
ii. The different approaches mentioned but not specified, such as ‘agro-
ecological,’ ‘sustainable agriculture,’ and ‘conservation agriculture.’

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

The only reason for loss of biodiversity is urbanization or the transformation of
different lands to subdivision.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

Loss of biodiversity could be a result of expansion of agricultural land too. The
continuous increase of the world population and the goal for everyone’s
food security is one of the roots of biodiversity loss. It is the biodiversity that
suffer, or in other words, the one that we ‘trade off' to attain food security.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

That men are much more of a contributor in food security than women.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

That statistical data proves otherwise. However, we tend to continue with the
norm that it is men who can do more compared to women, when it comes to
ensuring food security. According to the article, women are pertained to as
the ‘guardians of household food security’ – for when they have access to
land, they usually use it for production of food.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

Biodiversity is helpful only in food consumption of humans.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

That biodiversity is an important aspect of the planet and are much needed
for the survival of human beings not only for food consumption but also for
primary health care. It is stated in the article that according to the World
Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the population in many developing
countries rely on biodiversity for primary health care.

iv. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

Access to food does not just end by being able to grow and collect food.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

The importance of one’s ability to purchase food is a big factor to attain food
security. One example given in the article is the situation of India, which is
considered ‘self-sufficient’ in agriculture, but many in their population
experiences food insecurity due to poverty. Meanwhile, Singapore and
Hongkong have no agricultural base but their population is considered food
secure because they have the ability to purchase.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. I want to know more about the different approaches with regards to
increasing the resilience of agriculture to climate change.
ii. Is our chance of saving the biodiversity big enough for us to completely
recover from its loss?
