The Four Language Skills
• The four skills of language learning
are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
• They are four capabilities to comprehend, produce, and use the
language in effective interpersonal communication.
• They are acquired in order of listening, speaking, reading & writing.
• Listening and reading are called receptive skills because learners
do not need to produce language to do these, they receive and
understand it.
• Speaking and writing are called productive skills because learners
doing these need to produce language.
• Good English level means to understand and produce the
language.
• We should teach and develop all the language skills of students.

• Students use speaking and listening to solve problems, speculate,
share ideas, make decisions and reflect on what is important.
• Social relations in the classroom depend on talk, and students’
confidence and attitudes to learning are affected by friendships
and positive interaction.
• Therefore, having the right words to express their thoughts, to
rationalise their ideas, and talk about their feelings and viewpoints
are essential for all facets of education.
• Teaching basic speaking skills has a key role in all subjects and
areas of learning.

• Students join school with limited language skills.
• Teaching help them overcome their fears by making talk a positive
and interesting experience.
• Students must learn new vocabulary and phrases.
• Teachers should speak slowly and clearly to facilitate pronunciation
and understanding.
• New words need to be repeated frequently until the students are
con dent to use them for themselves.
• Students should be able to speak clearly and express their ideas
using appropriate vocabulary.

What is active listening?
• Active listening is the ability to focus completely on a speaker,
understand their message, comprehend the information and
respond thoughtfully. Unlike passive listening, which is the act of
hearing a speaker without retaining their message.

TEACHERS’ ROLE IN LISTENING ACTIVITIES
There are eight main roles for teachers:
A. A teacher as an Organizer: Teachers should explain what their
students want to do, give clear instructions, and give a useful
feedback to their students. Teachers also prepare the listening
lesson and give guidance to their learners.
B. A Teacher as a Controller: It is a teacher’s duty to arrange
students when to speak, and what language they should use.
Teachers also determine what students should do in the listening
phases.

C. A Teacher as an Evaluator: Teachers evaluate their students and
give them a feedback on their performance. They should
evaluate the level of their students.
D. A Teacher as a Resource: In this role, teachers give their students
the necessary advice and help them to solve their difficulties
specifically unknown vocabulary or grammatical patterns.
E. A Teacher as a Tutor: Teachers act as a coach and a resource and
help their learners to develop ideas. Teachers assist their
learners in every stage and should help them towards predicting
missing information.

F. A Teacher as an Investigator: Teachers observe the activities in
their lessons and assess their leaners’ performance. They
evaluate the advantages of listening activities.
G. Teacher as a Prompter: Teachers urge their students and give
recommendations toward activities that are carried out by
learners. Teachers should support students during listening
activity so that they can be successful.
H. A Teacher as a Participant: Teachers take part in the listening
activities and must be aware of leading in these activities. They
participate in pre and post listening activities like discussions etc.

THE GOALS OF LISTENING COMPREHENSION LESSONS
• All teachers and learners should be aware of Listening
comprehension goals. They are as follows:
1. Listening comprehension lessons should be carefully and
gradually planned. Listening activities progress from simple to
more complex while learners get in language proficiency.
2. Listening comprehension lessons should demand active student
participation. Student participation is his/her written answer to
the listening comprehension material and immediate feedback on
performance that can keep students’ concern and motivation.

THE GOALS OF LISTENING COMPREHENSION LESSONS
3. Provide a communicative necessity for remembering to develop
concentration. These two factors are very important in recalling
and can be done by giving the students the writing task before
listening to the material.
4. Focus on conscious memory task. 'Listening is receiving, receiving
needs thinking, and thinking needs memory. It is impossible to
separate listening, thinking and remembering.
5. The focus of listening comprehension lessons is on teaching not
testing.

Teaching Listening Skill
Listening is a very important skill. It is the queen of the four skills as it
helps students to speak, communicate with others and learn
vocabulary and grammar. It is the first receptive language skill.
Listening difficulties
• The speed
It is related to how many people are there in the conversation and
how quickly they speak.
• Vocabulary
It is related to the inability of students to understand the listening text
if they cannot understand the vocabulary included.

• Structures
It is related to the inability of students to understand the listening text
if they cannot understand the key structures included.
• The length and the topic
A long conversation about football, food, clothes, films or TV
programs may be easier for students to understand than a short one
about politics or science.
• Intonation
The intonation and stress of English native speakers are different from
speakers of other languages.
