Competency Statement 1.
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment.
Function Area 1: Safe
Safety is a major part of child care, above all things parents want their children to
be safe. I will uphold this honest requirement by realizing accidents do happen, but it is
my main goal that at all times safety is my main objective. I will analyze everything with
safety as my top priority. Toys shall be of the right size to prevent choking hazards. Any
broken toy will be repaired and if repair is not possible it will be thrown away and
replaced. I will limit any sitting time to help maximize my ability to watch all children. The
classroom will be organized in a way to eliminate clutter and optimize mobility ease.
Function Area 2: Healthy
Being healthy is not just about germs. While that is a major aspect to keeping
children healthy. I will provide a well rounded healthy atmosphere. These healthy
choices are given through meals, physical activity, and a calm environment. Physical
activity will be provided through planned out activities and also through opportunities
during free play. Planned and unplanned physical activities will be performed indoor
and outdoor. A calm environment will be provided by having a positive attitude and
encouraging others to do so also. Having a healthy environment also includes keeping
everything as germ free as possible. Children have plenty of germs and they spread so
easily. Keeping the equipment that is used clean is very important. The best way to

keep the germs away is to clean the surfaces with disinfectant products and practice
proper hand washing procedures. Cleaning supplies will be kept locked in a cabinet
and out of reach of the children.
Functional Area 3: Learning Environment
A learning environment will be somewhat different for each individual child. To
help optimize their own style of learning and their own developmentally appropriate
needs. Each child's learning varies, some like calm monotones. Others are better
learners when they are moving or is you sing what you are teaching. While others learn
best by doing it hands on. So I will observe each child and communicate with the
parents to find the best possible learning environment for that child. I will also involve
the child's parents with activities, such as sending home activities they can do with their
child.
