PREGUNTAS GUÍA RESUELTO

1. What is the function of the monoblock mechanism?

It is a cast iron or aluminum part that houses the cylinders of an internal combustion engine
as well as the crankshaft support supports. The function of the block is to house the
reciprocating train, made up of the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons.

2. What is the importance of the crankshaft in the engine?

It is in charge of receiving the rectilinear movement of the piston, through the connecting
rod, to transform it into circular movement

3. What are the techniques for assembling the monoblock mechanism?

For the assembly we will use the maximum cleanliness and neatness in the assembly order.
Unless the grinder has done the job well, order and care when assembling the set will
translate into performance and driveability. The entire block assembly has screw tightening
torque specifications given by the engine manufacturer, which are absolutely necessary to
respect. Normally these will be tightening of the bench necks, the connecting rod foot and
the flywheel.

TRABAJO FINAL DEL CURSO
4. What are the techniques of seating the engine?
We must keep the tachometer between two thousand and three thousand revolutions per
minute, accelerating and decelerating for a maximum of 20 or 30 minutes, in this way, when
we accelerate we will be sealing the engine and when we lift our foot from the pedal we will
give the machine a bath of oil that allows the rings and cylinders to settle, generating the
least possible friction.

5. What are the safety measures that should be applied in the repair of an engine?
Make sure there are no cables or loose parts inside the engine compartment. Disconnect
the electrical system before starting work. Keep the work area clean, orderly and ventilated.
Use specific equipment to handle and move heavy components.

TEMA: Repair the monoblock and moving assembly mechanisms.

OBJETIVO DEL TRABAJO

Develop procedures to repair the engine applying technical standards and specifications.

Detail the procedures to repair the faults found in the engine such as: loss of power,
emission of blue smoke from the exhaust pipe in the morning and excessive oil
consumption.

PROCESO DE EJECUCIÓN
STEPS PRIOR TO ENGINE REPAIR:

 Before beginning the repair, it is important to have the necessary resources to

perform a general diagnosis and repair of the engine.

 As well as the necessary equipment to carry out vacuum, compression and leak tests.

 It is also important to have the security measures for the correct repair procedure.

 Subsequently, it proceeds to perform the engine diagnosis, performing the fault tests
when using the vehicle.

 This is important information, since the user is the one who knows the state of his
car.

 In general, the preliminary diagnosis of the engine is carried out taking into account
the car in motion. Performs engine vacuum tests, cylinder compression tests, and
cylinder leak tests.

WHEN DISASSEMBLING THE ENGINE, WE IDENTIFY THE PARTS TO BE EVALUATED

AND SUBSEQUENTLY CHANGED:

 Pistons
 Crankshaft.
 Engine gaskets
 Distribution kit
 Plugs
 Alternator
 Pipes
 Injectors
 Valves
 Intake manifold
 Cylinder head or cylinder heads
 Monoblock
 Connecting rods
 Camshaft

ENGINE REPAIR

 After disassembling the engine and having each part separately, we proceed to the
measurement and analysis of each of its parts.
 To do this, we use the appropriate tools to measure engine wear. Locating defective
components, which prevent the proper functioning of its components.

4
TRABAJO FINAL DEL CURSO
 The tools used for this measurement are: the vernier, arc micrometer, dial indicator
or micrometer, surface caliper.
 Each one of them has the necessary parameters and components to measure and
analyze the condition of the engine.
 The higher the displayed measurement number, the greater the engine wear. We
must be very careful not to present reading errors.

We proceed to repair the key elements of the engine:

a) The head and valve train:The cylinder heads are removed, disassembled and
cleaned.
 Check if there are no cracks in the heads or if there are kinks in the joints.
 Test the alignment and pressure on the valve springs. Also, they should be
changed.
 Change the valve seals, checking and rectifying the components of this piece.

b) Cylinder Block Repair: At this stage, we disassemble the cylinder block and clean
it.
 The block is visually checked for cracks and corrosion. From here, you can see
if there is deformation on the surface.
 We disassemble the intake and exhaust manifolds. Once repaired, we put them
back together. If necessary we replace the gaskets. The camshaft bearings must
also be changed.

c) Check the condition of the pistons and bushings if it is necessary to change them.
Replace the piston rings and connecting rods by replacing the nuts or bolts.
Assemble the engine parts using sealants and gaskets.

d) Diagnoses and repairs cooling and lubrication systems: oil pressure tests are
carried out.
 Replace the water pump, to avoid overheating and avoid future breakdowns.
 Repair or change the oil pump (analyzing rotors, liners, gears and reservoirs).
 Also, the oil filter should be changed.

e) Perform cooling system tests, change the thermostat and the water pump and try
auxiliary oil coolers.

f) We culminate with the inspection and verification of the engine repair: Once the
engine is installed in the vehicle, check the ignition systems and check all levels of
engine oils.

g) Start the engine assuring that the oil pressure is at a tolerable level.

h) Refrigerant temperature is checked. Check the operation of the cooling system.

i) Finally, start the engine and let it run for a prudent time, listening to noises and
checking compression, vacuum and leaks to determine the proper functioning of the
same.
