Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 10!

This Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division Office of La Carlota City and DepEd Regional Office VI –
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This was developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents
and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the
K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

This Learning Activity Sheet is a self-directed instructional material aimed

to
guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using
the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the
learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for
productivity and employment.

For the learning facilitator:

This Science 10 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities for the specified Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between the teacher and the learner. This is
made available to the learners with the references/links to ease independent
learning.

For the learner:

This Science 10 Activity Sheet was developed to help you continue learning
even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your school and teacher on the agreed
schedule.

Role of Hormones in Male and Female Reproductive Systems

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male
reproductive systems. (S10LT-IIIb-34)

II. Background Information for Learners

Hormones are chemical substances secreted by the endocrine glands
that have specific regulatory effects on cells in the different parts of the body.
The endocrine glands contain hormone-containing vesicles that release
hormones directly into the bloodstream going into the target cells. Hormones
play an important role in both male and female reproductive systems.
The hypothalamus is the main regulatory center for maintaining
homeostasis in the body found in the frontal region of the brain that receives
and sends nerve signal through its neurosecretory cells to many endocrine
glands to give directions, primarily the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is
a small pea-shaped gland connected to the hypothalamus by the pituitary
stalk and it is divided into two regions - anterior and posterior lobes. Both the
pituitary gland and hypothalamus connect the nervous and endocrine
systems.
The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland both affect the male and
female reproductive system to secrete sex hormones which led to the control
of the development of sex characteristics. The hypothalamus secretes more
gonadropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at the onset of puberty which
stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to release two hormones namely the
luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Both
hormones are present in males and females. The release of these two
hormones also marks the beginning of sexual maturity.
In this learning activity you will discover how these hormones regulated in
both male and female reproductive systems.

Role of Hormones in Male Reproductive System

Hypothalamus
releases GnRH

The GnRH
stimulates FSH
and LH in the
pituitary gland

The pituitary
gland controls
the production
of testosterone
and the amount
in the blood Testicles produce
testosterone and
sperm

Figure A. Shows how the pituitary gland controls the function of the testes

In males, the LH directs the specialized cells in the testes to secrete

testosterone. It also triggers the spermatogonia to divide and produce
spermatids. The male reproductive system has prostate glands. The
secondary male characteristics development like growth of body hair is
stimulated by testosterone. Chemicals from these glands nourish the
sperm cells and help them mature. The production of sperm cells and
the release of semen can be regulated by hormones or special chemicals
that come from the testis, the brain and the pituitary gland (refer to
Figure A). These hormones keep the reproductive system properly
functioning.

2
Role of Hormone in Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system,

just like the male reproductive system,
is also regulated by hormones. The LH
stimulates the gonads to produce sex
hormones and the release of the egg cell
from the ovary. The follicle stimulating
hormones (FSH) stimulates the sex
organs to produce gametes or sex cells.
While other hormones prepare the
uterus so a baby can grow in it, other
hormones still control the stretching of
the uterus during pregnancy.
The two hormones; LH and FSH
also stimulate the ovaries to produce

estrogen and progesterone that are also

ovary
The roles of hormones for both male and
female reproductive system can be summarized in Table 1 below.

Table 1. Roles of hormones in Male and Female Reproductive Systems

Gland Hormones Function
Testes Testosterone • controls secondary sex characteristics and
(Male) sex drive
• regulates the development of the male sex
organ in embryo
Ovaries Estrogen • regulates the development of female
(Female) secondary sex characteristics at puberty
• controls sex drive.
Progesterone • controls the development of endometrium
(mucus membrane lining the womb) during
menstrual cycle and maintenance of uterus
during pregnancy
Pituitary Prolactin • stimulates the production of milk in the
mammary gland

3
Luteinizing • stimulates ovulation, maturation of egg cell,
hormone (LH) progesterone production in females
• in males, it stimulates sperm and
testosterone production
Follicle • stimulates the maturation of egg cell in the
stimulating ovary and estrogen production in females
hormone (FSH) • in males, it stimulates sperm production
