OBJECTIVES

Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, this research explores students’
social and cultural adaptation within mainstream culture. It aims to:

1. Explore culture's impact on student learning and social behavior.

2. Examine culture's impact on the learning and social behavior of students from
different culture
INTRODUCTION

Culture is part of the lives of all human being. No matter where you live, who
you are and what are your views and perceptions in life, you are working and
building relationships with people—people who have all cultures. In every country
and places, there is always a culture that makes it people different from others. It is a
strong part of everyone’s lives since it can influence how you view the world, your
values, your humor, your hopes, your loyalty and even your worries and fears. So
when you’re working and creating relationship with other people, it helps to see and
understand the culture they have.

But as time passes by, cultural differences become a big issue and a problem
to the people around the globe. Hate crimes are now very alarming especially in
America eventhough there are already laws against it. Asian American experienced
racism and descrimination in the Western part. An individual is being descriminated
of their skin color, beliefs, traditions, language and racial or ethnic origin. Thus,
culture can be a key to unity when people see it as a beautiful thing but it can also
cause chaos and misunderstanding to many people when they view culture diversity
as negative one.

Last year (2020), the video of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in
Minneapolis triggered protests around the world. It brought renewed attention to the
high-profile deaths of black Americans during the past decade and ongoing concerns
about systematic racism in the criminal justice system. Discrimation doesn’t only hurt
the physical aspect of the person but also in emotional and mental aspect that
makes things worst.Harming and dragging someone’s right because of the
differences of views, perspective and belief is a perpetuate inequality.

In the Philippines, students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) often encountered discrimination; bullying, physical and sexual
assault. These abuses can cause deep and lasting harm and curtail students’ right to
education.
In this regard, the researchers decided to conduct a research and an interview
to a selected participants regarding to cultural difficulties in adjusting within
mainstream culture.

Results

Based on the interview and the results of the answered questionnaires

implemented by the researchers, most of the difficulties encountered by the
respondents in adjusting within mainstream culture are difficulties with the language
being used, and loss of established friendship networks. Others were because of the
ethnicity they came from and that leads them to have cultural miscommunication
where they were judged by others because of their behavior and way of living.

Conclusions

Based on the findings and the responds of the participants from 10 different
questions in the interview, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Students who experienced being teased, insulted and bullied by others

because of the language they speak, the accent of the words, the style of
clothing they wear and their views and beliefs in life, which are part of the
culture of an individual may affect in achieving the mainstream culture in a
society.
2. Discrimination and racism of other’s culture may have a huge influence and
effect of the life of an individual as well as in achieving the mainstream culture
in a society.
Recommendations

Based on the conclusions, the Group 1 recommended as follows:

1. Government (National and Local) may implement a program and create laws
that may strengthen the previous law in cultural difficulties that may help and
give opportunities to different tribes and ethnic group to showcase the
different culture they have.
2. DepEd and other institutions may implement activities related to the students’
culture so that the different culture from different ethnic groups won’t gone.
3. Parental involvement may be recognized in changing the student’s attitude
towards other’s culture. Parents may need to take proactive role and guidance
in educating their children to respect and love other’s culture as well as the
own culture.
4. Teachers involvement in shaping each student’s culture is significant.
Teachers may give lectures and lessons about the important role that the
culture plays in everyone’s life.
5. Each tribe or ethnic group may join different activities like festival so that their
culture can be showcased and can be seen by other people.
