Performance Task 1
Science 8
A.Y 2021-2022
Name: 100
Grade & Section:
Date:
Teacher:

Learning Competency:
A. Relate mass and inertia to a body’s motion
B. Investigate the relationship between the amount of force applied and the mass of the
object to the amount of change in the object’s motion
C. Infer that when a body exerts a force on another, an equal amount of force is exerted
back on it.

TITLE OF PROJECT: Move It Like Newton

BACKGROUND:
There are a lot of forces happening around us. A push and a pull will give us an idea on
how forces can be applied. An idea that a force is being applied will pop in your mind if
something moves. But what is the exact relation of force and motion? This answer to this
question has been investigated for centuries by philosophers and observers of nature. It was Isaac
Newton who described three important rules which help in explaining why macroscopic objects
move the way they do.

At the end of this activity, you should be able to test the Newton’s three laws of motion
on the coin drop challenge.

GUIDELINES:

Safety Precautions
• Use gloves and eye protection during the execution of this experiment.
• Make sure that the activity area is clean and free from obstructions or sharp objects.

1. Prepare your camera and the materials to be used in this activity.

Materials: a notecard, at least 20 one-peso coins, and a drinking glass/clear plastic
cup
2. Once you are ready, set up your materials. Put a notecard on top of your drinking glass
or clear plastic cup.
3. Put a coin on top of the card. Then, with a sharp flick, hit the card out of the coin and
cup setup. You may also pull the card it towards you.
4. Repeat the experiment by adding more coins. The challenge is to have as many coins as
you can to get in the cup at the same time.

5. Summarize your data and observations in Table 1.1. Record only the five most
successful attempts. Analyze your result in Table 1.2. From the “Action/Event”
column, indicate the action or the part during the coin-drop experiment where you
observed the three laws of motion. Answer the Analysis and Interpretation on page 3.
6. The file containing the accomplished report sheet should be submitted (in pdf).
Also attach at least 1 photo and a short clip while you are doing the experiment.
7. The submission of Video and photo should be placed in your Google drive by putting it
in your Science Output Folder.
7.1 In Google Drive create folder: SCIENCE 8_LAST NAME, Example:
SCIENCE 8_PICHE
7.2 Inside the created science 8 folder create another folder and name it as
FQPT1_LAST NAME, EXAMPLE: FQPT1_PICHE. The folder should contain the
ff:
1. FILE PT1, which includes data and results, analysis and interpretation
2. Video/ short clip LINK
3. Pictures LINK
7.3 Copy the Shareable Link of the file folder for FQPTI_LAST NAME to your
moodle module activity entitled ”Long Task 1: MOVE IT LIKE A NEWTON”.
NOTE: ONLY SHAREABLE LINK WILL BE SHARED AND SINCE IT IS
INTENDED ONLY FOR LINK.
8. Follow the instructions carefully.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

1. In what event or action in the coin-drop experiment was the LAW OF INERTIA
observed? Explain your answer.

2. In what event or action in the coin-drop experiment was the LAW OF

ACCELERATION observed? Explain your answer.

3. In what event or action in the coin-drop experiment was the LAW OF INTERACTION
observed? Explain your answer.

4. What is the highest number of coins that you were able to get inside the cup at the same
time during the coin-drop experiment? What are the factors to consider so that all the
coins on top of the cardboard will land inside the cup?
