Lesson 1: Understanding the Concept of Outdoor and Adventure Education
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. recognize the concept of outdoor and adventure education;

B. value the importance of the benefits of outdoor and adventure education; and
C. enumerate examples of outdoor and adventure education activities.
Reading 1
Outdoor education can be simply defined as experiential learning in, for, or about the
outdoors. The term 'outdoor education', however, is used broadly to refer to a range of
organized activities that take place in a variety of ways in predominantly outdoor environments.
Outdoor education is organized learning that takes place in the outdoors. Examples of outdoor
education are Camping, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Snowboarding, etc. Importance of Outdoor
Education
• Outdoor education gives depth to the curriculum and makes an important contribution to
students’ physical, personal and social education.
 Allows students to experience a different learning style by being in a different
environment and using different skills. Branches of Outdoor Education
1. Environmental Education- teaches individuals how to weigh various sides of an issue

through critical thinking and it enhances their own problem-solving and decision-making
skills (Environmental Education and Literacy, 2012).
Components of Environmental Education
 Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges.

 Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental
challenges.
 Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain
environmental quality
 Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
 Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges

2. Adventure Education- is a form of experiential learning typically associated with activities
involving risk, from cooperative games such as raft building to high adventure activities such as
rock climbing. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the planning, delivery and evaluation of

Adventure Education, with a strong emphasis on professional practice and delivery

- Focuses on building self-confidence and leadership qualities through experiential and
collaborative learning (Maatta, 2012).
-Adventure learning occurs outdoors, incorporating extreme conditions, and online

through "expedition" activities. It combines experiential learning with decision-making,
team building and the application of real-world situations to the learning environment
(Maatta, 2012).
