SELF-LEARNING KIT
FOREWORD
The SELF-LEARNING KIT is an effective instructional material, which is student-centered and
is geared towards the development of the skill of “Learning to learn.” ( Henson, 1995)”

As an instructional tool and as self- instructional material, the learning module is an innovation
in curriculum and instruction, which is extensively used by pragmatic institutions, and even trainers in
valid training programs.

Students become independent thinkers and learn to accept responsibility. Self- Learning
modules give the opportunity to develop a good work ethic.

Self- Learning Kit ( SLK) is an innovative too produced by the DepEd Division of Mandaue City
to meet the Standards of the K-12 Curriculum in providing our learners relevant and localized learning
content.

Learning in true sense requires individual guidance, personal attention and overall individual
efforts of the learners. Self - Learning Modules may prove to be a boon for students due to their
enriched features. They perform the role of an efficient teacher.

 Self- Learning modules give the opportunity to develop a good work ethic. Due to New Normal
schema adopted by Dep-Ed, the need of self - Learning modules is the demand of the time.
Along with it, knowledge through Self-Learning modules also helps to inculcate self-study
habits and self-confidence among students which are very much essential to enhance
learning.

 This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) is designed to help students understand learning through his own
standpoint of the lessons. It focuses on the various approaches used in explaining how and
why people learn and explores how these theories would apply to the teaching – learning
process.

 Utilize irregular verbs by sentence construction
 Construct a short reaction about a certain issue using irregular verbs

IRREGULAR VERBS

- are common verbs in the English language that do not

follow the simple system of adding “d” or “ed” to the end of
the word to form a past tense

- these are verbs that contrast with regular verbs

- many of the irregular V2 (past simple) and V3 (past

participle) forms are the same such as cut – cut, had – had,
let – let, hurt – hurt, fed – fed, sold – sold
- the simple past and past participle of irregular verbs can end in variety of ways with
absolutely no consistent pattern

Sample Sentences

 I saw the dog.

Saw is a conjugation of the irregular verb see.

 I went to school.

Went is a conjugation of the irregular verb go.

 I had a cake for my birthday.

Had is the conjugation of the irregular verb have.

Irregular verbs account for approximately 200 of the most commonly used in the
English verbs. Not only these verbs are common but some of them are necessary for
constructing basic sentences.

For you to learn English, you also need to learn the irregular verbs. For you to do
this, memorization is a way to learn all the conjugations.
Forms of Irregular Verbs

As a review, please remember that English verbs have five basic forms used to express time:

 The root (sometimes called as the base form)

 Third-person singular
 Simple past
 Past participle
 Present participle

The root is the base from of the verb from which the other forms are constructed. Please
take note that it is important to focus on the conjugations of irregular verbs when talking about
the past, specifically the simple past and the past participle, because this is where the
irregularities occur.

The simple past is used to talk about completed actions in the past. The past participle
is combined with auxiliary verbs to form perfect, passive and conditional tenses. Auxiliary verbs
are helping verbs that give more information on the time or mood of the main verb.

Take note that irregular verbs do not follow a consistent pattern when forming the simple
past or the past participle, unlike the regular verbs. For example, be becomes was (singular) /
were (plural) when forming the simple past and been when forming the past participle.

Examples:
Simple Past

 Yesterday, I was at school.

 Yesterday, Joe and Sally were in class.

Past Participle
 I have been in school today.
 Joe has been with Sally.
Have and has are the auxiliary verbs in the sample sentences while been is the past
participle of the be verb.

So remember, irregular words should not be conjugated like regular verbs.

Note: Conjugate means changing the form of the verb to make it agree with the subject.

Examples for the base form of the verb see and ate:
Simple Past with correct conjugations without auxiliary verbs
 Jose saw the dog.
 Jose ate the apple.

Past Participle with correct conjugations with auxiliary verbs

 Jose has seen the dog.
 Jose has eaten the apple.
As what was mentioned, for you to learn irregular verbs, we have to follow the old fashioned
way of learning, and that is memorization. Below is the list of the Common Irregular Verbs.

Other Rules for Irregular Verbs

In addition to how irregular verbs do not add -ed to the end to form the past tense
version, you’ll also encounter some other odd rules.

Some Do Not Change Form with Tense

Normally, the past form of the verb looks different from its base form or present tense
counterpart. Even in the case of most irregular verbs, you’ll notice a change, like how
“come” becomes “came.” However, there are a number of irregular verbs that do not
change form at all with changes in the verb tense.

Here are several notable examples:

- bet - bid - burst - bust

- cast - cut - hit - hurt

- let - preset - put - quit

- read - set - shed - slit

- shut - split - spread - sublet

- thrust - upset

Some May Not Change Form or Add

an - ed

Eventhough the general rule of thumb dictates that irregular verbs do not add –ed to
the end to form the past tense version, some irregular verbs do, and some require doubling
the final consonant before adding the - ed suffix to the end.

Common Examples:

- fit > fit/fitted - input > input/inputted - wed > wed/wedded

- rid > rid/ridded - sweat > sweat/sweated - wet > wet/wetted

Let’s have more sample sentences using
irregular verbs.

Are you ready?

Here are several examples of irregular verbs being used in sentences.

 The car was blue before it was painted black.

 She awoke with a start.

 Pete bent the frame when he dropped it.

 The Smiths brought pumpkin pie to the potluck dinner.

 Tina chose the purple sweater.

A good way to see irregular verbs in action is to compare a series of sample sentences
involving the present tense, past tense, and the past participle.
 He wanted to be the very best, like his father was before him, and his grandfather had
been before him.

 To build her sandcastle, Arya looked at how her brother built his sandcastle after he had
built up so much anticipation.

 Today, we’re going to drive to the mall. Yesterday, we drove to the park. All said, we
had driven thousands of miles that summer.

 Her mother wants to grow carrots this year, since she grew turnips last year, and had
grown so many other vegetables over the years.

 Sheldon heard the phone ring. And then it rang again. It had rung every day, around
the same time, for three weeks.
