WHAT
IS
RABIES?
2
●
Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva
of infected animals. The rabies virus is usually
transmitted through a bite.
●
●
Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the
brain in humans and other mammals. Early symptoms
can include fever and tingling at the site of exposure.
●
3
HOW
IS
RABIES
TRANSMITTED?
4
●
Rabies infection is caused by the rabies virus. The virus is
spread through the saliva of infected animals. Infected
animals can spread the virus by biting another animal or a
person.
●
Rabies can be spread when infected saliva gets into an
open wound or the mucous membranes, such as the mouth
or eyes. This could occur if an infected animal were to lick
an open cut on your skin.
5
SIGNS
AND
SYMPTOMS
6
●
The first symptoms of rabies may be very similar to those
of the flu and may last for days.
●
●
Later signs and symptoms may include:
q
q
Fever
q
Headache
q
Nausea
q
Vomiting
q
Agitation
q
Anxiety
●
7
q
Confusion
q
Hyperactivity
q
Difficulty swallowing
q
Excessive salivation
q
Fear brought on by attempts to drink fluids because of difficulty
swallowing water
q
Hallucinations
q
Insomnia
q
Partial paralysis
TREATMENT
9
●
If a person is bitten or scratched by an animal that may have
rabies, or if the animal licks an open wound, the individual should
immediately wash any bites and scratches for 15 minutes with
soapy water, povidone iodine, or detergent. This might minimize
the number of viral particles.
●
●
After exposure and before symptoms begin, a series of shots can
prevent the virus from thriving. This is usually effective.
●
10
Strategies:
q
q
A fast-acting dose of rabies immune globulin: Delivered as soon as
possible, close to the bite wound, this can prevent the virus from
infecting the individual.
q
A series of rabies vaccines. These will train the body to fight the virus
whenever it finds it.
q
It is safest to assume the worst and begin the course of shots.
q
A person with symptoms should be made as comfortable as possible.
They may need breathing assistance.
Teaching Strategies for children for effective
educational learning
Story Telling
Importance of this strategy:
• Inspires purposeful talking, and not just about the topic (rabies) —
there are many games you can play.
• improves listening skills.
• Gives a motivating reason for English-language learners
to speak and write English.
•
Video Presentation
Importance of this strategy:
• Video is more persuasive than other types of content
because the human brain requires emotional input to
make decisions. No technology is better at conveying
emotion than video.
• It allows the children to listen more about the topic
specifically about rabies prevention.
Games
Importance of this strategy:
• Play is absolutely necessary to their development and
how they come to understand the world around them.
• Play is very important in child learning because it helps
develop there imagination.
Using of pictures and diagrams
Importance of this strategy:
• Used appropriately and sequentially, pictures can not
only illustrate a topic but also can provide the
experience base children require in order to profit from
reading and writing and from numerous other learning
experiences
• Enhances the visual perception of children
Guide Questions
Importance of this strategy:
• Asking questions helps you motivate students' curiosity
about the topic and at the same time helps you assess
their understanding of the material.
• It's helpful in discovering a person's individual way of
thinking and their mental blocks, and in applying
specific mindsets to help them achieve their goals
RABIES
PREVENTION
18
●
Rabies is a serious disease, but individuals and
governments can and do take action to control and prevent,
and, in some cases, wipe it out completely.
●
Strategies include:
regular anti-rabies vaccinations for all pets and domestic
animals
●
bans or restrictions on the import of animals from some
countries
●
widespread vaccinations of humans in some
●
areas
●
educational information and awareness

IMPORTANT
REMINDERS
ABOUT
RABIES
21
●
The primary route of transmission for rabies is through the
bite of an infected animal, but it is also possible, but very
rare, that the virus can be spread when saliva enters an
open wound or the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose,
or mouth.
●
There is no treatment for rabies, but if you are bitten or
otherwise exposed to a rabid animal you can be vaccinated
against rabies.
●
22
●
You cannot tell an animal has rabies just by looking at it, though
oftentimes the animal will be behaving strangely.
●
It’s important not to play with unknown domestic, stray or wild
animals, as they could be infected.
●
If you are bitten by an animal, you should immediately wash the
wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Make a note
of what animal bit you, if it was acting strangely, and where the
animal went. Contact animal control, and they may be able to
capture the animal and test it for rabies.
