STRAIGHT LINES

INCLINATION OF A LINE

If a line L makes an angle θ with the positive direction of the x - axis, then θ is called the
inclination of the line L.
The range of θ is 0 ≤ θ ≤ π .
If θ = 00, then the line L is parallel to the x- axis.
If θ = 900, then the line L is perpendicular to the x - axis.
Two lines have same inclination if and only if they are parallel.

Slope of a line:

If θ is the inclination of a line L then tan θ is called the slope (or gradient) of the line L.
The slope of a line L is denoted by m. m = tan θ ( θ ≠ 900)

e.g., i) If the inclination of a line is 450, then its slope is 1.

ii) If the slope of a line is 3 , than its inclination is 600.

Note 1: The slope of x - axis is 0 . (∵ θ = 0)

Note 2: The slope of a horizontal line is 0 . (∵ θ = 0)
Note 3 : The slope of y - axis is not defined .
Note 4 : The slope of a vertical line is not defined.
Note 5 : if 1. θ = 00 m = 0 .
2. 00 < θ < 900 m > 0.
3. θ = 900 m is not defined.
4. 900 < θ < 1800 m < 0.
THEOREM
y2 − y1
The slope of the line passing through the points A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2) is , x1 ≠ x2 .
x2 − x1
(If x1 = x2, then the line is vertical and hence its slope is not defined.)

Note: Two non vertical lines are parallel iff their slopes are equal.
Note: Two non vertical lines are perpendicular iff the product of their slopes is –1.
