ABSTRACT

This study determines the feasibility of kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata) extract

as a perfume for body/cloth. This focuses to produce a perfume that is cheaper and can
help people with body odor. Plumeria acuminata is commonly known as ‘perungalli’ in
Tamil and belonging to the family Apocynaceae. This plant is wildly distributed all over
the world among tropical region especially in the southern part of India. In the traditional
medicine system, different parts of the plant have been useful in the treatment of a variety
of a disease such as decoction of the bark is used as purgative and febrifuge, the latex is
used for itching with coconut oil, the flower is used as a contraceptive, etc.

The basic ingredients were collected in the front yard. The study was conducted in
P-4 Brgy. Mabua, Surigao City. 50 pieces of Kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata), flowers
were pounded using mortar and pestle to produce the extract. The extract produced was
measured using a beaker. Then it was transferred to a spray container.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives

and solvents. It is use to give the human body an agreeable scent. It is in liquid form and

use to give a pleasant scent to a person’s body. The problem is in these perfumes they

may have nice and soothing scent but they can really have bad effect in our environment

and even in our selves because of chemical used in making.

The study tries to help ourselves by substituting the chemical by using the natural

extract of kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata) which is abundant in our country. Plumeria

flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. Its

fragrant can help a human body have a pleasant scent.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks the feasibility of Kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata) extract as a

perfume for cloth.

Specifically it seeks to answer the questions below:

How long does the scent stay?

Does the perfume affects the color the cloth?

Is kalachuchi extract an effective perfume?

6
Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant effect of kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata) extract as an

effective perfume for the body/cloth.

Ha: There is a significant effect of kalachuchi(plumeria acuminate) extract as an effective

perfume for the body/cloth.

Significance of the Study

This study would benefit the people to smell pleasant and keep their body odor away.

Scope and Limitation

The purpose of the study is finding a better perfume, which is cheaper and does

not harm the environment. The experimental study will be conducted to certify if the

flower extract of the kalachuchi (plumeria acuminata), used in making perfume is better

than others in terms of benefits and smell. The study focuses to produce a perfume that is

cheaper and can help people with body odor.

Review of Related Literature

A perfume or a parfum is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma

compounds. The odoriferous compound that make up a perfume can be manufactured

synthetically or extracted from plant or animal sources. Aroma compounds such as

vanillin or coumarin allows the composition of perfumes and smells previously

unattainable solely from natural aromatics alone. Perfume has been used throughout

history to mask body odor and smell attractive. It can be made with just one or more

layers of scents. This introduction to perfume is a guide to wonderful world of scents and

perfume. The fragrances of natural materials are caused by oils within them. Usually we

think of perfumes as flowery or fruit scented substances use to make a person smell

pleasant.

The Kalachuchi flowers has scientific name: Plumeria acuminata. These

flowers are known as frangifani, Frangipiani, temple flowers or graveyard flowers.

They come from a small tree with dark green & oblong shaped leaves. Petals of

Kalachuchi flowers are white in color with yellow tint at the center of it. Kalachuchi

flowers are fragrant and supposed to be source of perfume. These flowers are

favorite decorations on Spa establishments here in Cebu, Philippines.

Accordingly, the latex or juice is good for curing skin diseases, like herpes or

athletes foot and other skin diseases. Just put on affected area 3X a day. Decoction of

bark is also good for dysentery, diarrhea, gums and toothache. The latex mixed with

coconut oil is used for itching while poultice of leaves is beneficial for swellings too .

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECCOMENDATION

Summary
15
The beginning of perfume use can be traced back thousands of years to the early

Egyptians. The Egyptians were very spiritual people so they put containers of perfumes

even in their tombs. Perfume makes it way around the world. The common problem in

perfume nowadays is sometimes it is very strong scented that it hurts in our noses. It also

causes rushes, for those who has sensitive skin. Some perfume smells good on the first

application but then fades away after sometimes. These are the in artificial perfumes so

the researchers thought of an alternative way to make a perfume out of flower that will

capture people’s preference. The researchers thought of flowers because flowers have

different scents that the people are very attracted to the smell and o the appearance of the

flower.

Kalachuchi is usually cultivated for ornamental purpose. It is nowhere established

and how pantropic, its bark, leaves, and flowers are being utilized. It is sweet tasting and

neither warming now cooling in effect aromatic.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the experiment, the kalachuchi extract is not quite

effective as an alternative body/clothes perfume. It is shown in the table that set up B has

a pleasant odor than set up A but, as the observation continue we found out that the

pleasant odor does not go far as 2 hours. It only give pleasant odor in 1 hour and a half.

The result of the experiment support the hypothesis that the researcher has made.

Recommendation

16
After concluding, we, the researchers would like to recommend that:

 The experiment needs more extract to achieve a satisfying effectiveness of the

perfume.

 The extract from the kalachuchi should be more natural.

 The experiment needs to have other component to neutralize the odor of the

extract of the kalachuchi.
