Lesson Contemporary Art
1 Forms

What I Need to Know

In this lesson, we will know how the art forms have changed when the
contemporary arts era has started. Contemporary art is like “thinking
outside the box”. It has something to do with “thinking differently” or being
creative on producing something that is not usual or boring. It is coming up
with something that is unique and interesting.

What’s New

1. The different characteristics of Contemporary Art Forms

 Conceptual – lots of ideas are present in different artworks
 Innovative – most of the master pieces are original
 Expressive – different emotions can be felt. And the messages that it
brings are very strong.
 Experimental – outrageous in terms of purpose and function.

2. In allows the viewers to participate in the experience and is urged to

validate his/her own beliefs and feelings. Most of the contemporary art is
dynamic and interactive. The subjects are not only focused on the artist’
emotion. Audiences are also involved. It is because most of the themes of the
art work is about social realism.

2
3. It evokes more intense emotions from spectators.

The most noticeable features of Contemporary Art Forms

1. Most of the art forms are based on abstract expressionism.

2. It leaves the mark of the artist who makes them.

3. The means of the instruments to make the works of contemporary art

are changing and new technologies are used day by day. Example, in
photography in the present days. Taking a photograph is not just
“123 click”. But we already have different ways, different techniques
and even different practices.

4. It emphasizes the expression of self, emotions and manifests the

inclusion of societal issues and concerns.

The painting

societal issue
about
migration.

2 Integrative Arts

What I Need to Know

In this lesson we will learn about integrative arts. It’s from the root
word “integrate” which means “combination”. It is a combination of two or
more different arts forms. Unlike before when we say painting, it’s just
painting. When we say architecture, it’s just pure architecture.
Contemporary arts allows crossover of ideas and strategies.

What’s New

Integrative Art
It refers to inter disciplinary art, art study, development, production,
display, or creative creation of work that makes full use of two or more
disciplines of art to produce a work for a particular public. In short, it is a
combination of one or more forms

Before we classify the art forms as visual arts, applied arts and
performing arts. Now they evolve in contemporary era and have taken new
forms. It is no longer what they were several years ago.

Integrative Arts applied to Contemporary Arts

*Jewelry design * Fashion * theater arts * drawing

*literature * calligraphy * music * pottery
* dance * architecture * painting * interior designing
* photography *sculpture *film production
Integrative Art is a clear reflection of contemporary art forms.

4
Photography can be combined to a literary piece to produce a new artwork,
music and dance can successfully co-exist in presenting a new trend,
painting can now be seen in pottery, architectural structures can now be
found in film productions, and many more combinations and integration.
Contemporary art forms can go beyond its limits.
Because of Integrative art, contemporary art forms now include the
following:

- Choreography
- Literary and musical composition
- Theatrical performance
- Musical instruments
- Visual design and applied arts combined
- cinema

The contemporary art forms

Choreography

- an arrangement of design for dance movements usually

accompanied by music.
- Choreography is not just a simple body movements but it is an art
form that involves the art of dancing that purposely create a story.
A story that talks about people’s way of living in the society or a
story that shows a specific social issue.
- Mostly seen in the productions of street dancing in various
festivals. And these festivals are clear reflections on how people
live including their customs and traditions in a particular place.
- It is considered as an integrative art because it incorporates two
traditional art forms that we have. Dance and music

Musical Instruments

- Any tool that produce sound

- Integration of arts is seen through the intricate designs of musical
instruments representing visual arts. You will not only be listening
to music but you will be also be amazed with the artistic design
that you can see on it. Indeed it is a crossover of two traditional
art forms. Not just that, a musical instrument combined with
another musical instrument is an example of art integration.

Lucresia Kasilag – a National Artist for music. She is particularly known for
incorporating indigenous Filipino instruments into orchestral productions.

Literary and Musical Composition

- Literary works are written works meant to be read (poems, novels,

stories, etc.) while musical compositions on the other hand are not
written but notated.
- Songs that also talks about social realism.

5
- Songs produced because of the integration of literary works and
musical compositions are not anymore about entertainment. But it
leveled up through its social significance.
-

Visual Designs and Applied Arts Combined

Before the contemporary era has started, Visual art has the purpose of
enticing the eyes of the spectators. While applied arts is the functionality or
the usage of the artwork in our everyday living.

- It is a composition of any art elements. Its purpose is not only to

amuse the audience but also let them enjoy the function as a
product of art.

SCULPTURE

Before, sculptures focus

on realistic figures while
contemporary sculptures
centers to the movement
of the subjects. Including
the feelings, and the
thoughts it invokes. Just
like the paintings in the contemporary era, sculpture also becomes an
avenue for the sculptors to deliver their beliefs and principle in a particular
issue. Look at the picture above. It is the work of Mike Alano. It is pretty
obvious that the work of art is connected to Philippine politics. You can see
the sculpted images of the two contradicting political icons in the present
administration.

ARCHITECTURE

How the contemporary era did

changed the architecture? When
we say architecture in
contemporary era, it doesn’t have
similar or easy recognizable
features. Why? Because in this
period, the styles are really quite
varied when it comes to how they
look and how they were done
and constructed. Probably it’s
because of the number of
influences. SM Seaside Cebu is
one of the notable architectural structures in the present era. The best
feature in this structure is the 147meter tall tower. Inside this tower are the
restaurants and coffee shop and a viewing deck. It provides people a 360
degrees view of Cebu City.

6
INSTALLATION ART – is an artistic genre of three dimensional works that are
often site-specific an designed to transform the perception of a space. It can
be permanent but usually temporary.

The purpose of this is to entice the eyes of the viewers and to serve its
functions like advocating for a specific social issues and concerns.

The beached whale installation art

made by Greenpeace Southeast Asia-
Philippines in Cavite won several
awards at the Cannes Lions festival in
France.

Photos of the grisly installation art depicting a dead whale with a mouth full
of plastic waste went viral back in 2017 highlighting the need to address the
plastic pollution problem in the Philippines.

INTERACTIVE ART

It is a genre of arts in which the viewers

participate in some way by providing an input in
order to determine the outcome. In other words, in
reminds us the most noticeable features of
contemporary arts which has something to do
with audience’s participation so that we can
totally say that the art is functional or the art is
effective when it comes to the delivery of its
message. It needs participation; the audience
should be part of the artwork.

Theatrical Performance

This pertains to a public presentation of a dramatic or musical

entertainment. Contemporary theatrical performances have become
experimental, innovative, controversial and inter-disciplinary. It goes beyond
the usual theater and other art. One example of a Filipino theater is the
“Rak of Aegis”. It is considered as the longest running original pinoy musical
in contemporary Philippine theater. The message of this musical is a good
example of Filipino Resiliency. Aside from that, we also have “Ang Huling El
Bimbo”. A story of friendship told through the songs of the most iconic pinoy
rock band from the 90s. It is an original story that should resonate with
people who understand how the powerful bond between friends shapes our
lives.

7
Cinema

It is the most popular of the art forms; yet it is the youngest of all. Its
characteristics are the same with theater except that it is not a live
performance.
