PRINCIPLES OF STEEL DESIGN

MIDTERM Examination
Set A

Name: __________________________
Course/Block: ____________________
Date: ___________________________

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Write all your answers in the test booklet. Provide solutions if necessary.
2. Answer all the questions with integrity.
3. Use of mobile phones is prohibited.
4. Avoid erasures and superimpositions.

I. Identification (2 point each)

1. Formula for members not subject to transverse

loading between their supports

2. Modular ratio of concrete to steel

3. Bending stress formula

4. Other term for maximum product of area

5. Value of Fb bending about the weak axis for compact

section

6. Cc stands for

7. Factor of safety in long column

8. Stiffness of the beam relative to that of the

attached end-connection

9. Formula for slenderness ratio

10. Formula for axial stress

Prepared by: Engr. Raquel A. Almendares

II. Essay (5 points each)

1. Differentiate allowable compressive stress and

allowable bending stress in not more than three

sentences

2. How will you determine if the structure is statically

determinate, statically indeterminate, stable and

unstable?

3. why is there a need for LFRD and ASD in designing

structures?

III. Problem Solving (15 pts each)

1. A hollow circular steel column is supported on a steel base

plate and a concrete pedestal. Column ends are hinged and

sideway is prevented.

Given

Column axial load = 800 kN

Column inside diameter = 250 mm

Allowable column compressive stress = 55 MPa

Allowable concrete bearing stress = 10 MPa

a. Calculate the critical slenderness ratio of the column if

its thickness is 10 mm and a height of 4 m

b. Find the minimum required thickness (mm) of the column

c. What is the safe diameter (mm) of the base plate?

Prepared by: Engr. Raquel A. Almendares

2. A simply supported girder spans 10 m. the girder carries a

uniformly distributed load of 20kN/m throughout its length

Given

Girder properties

Section = 2460 x 97kg/m

Area = 12320 mm2

Depth = 465 mm

Flange bar = 193 mm

Flange thickness = 19 mm

Web thickness = 11 mm

Moment of Inertia (y) = 23x10^6 mm4

Moment of Inertia (x) = 45x10^6 mm4

Yield strength = 248 MPa

Rt = 50 mm

a. What is the maximum bending stress?

b. What is the maximum web shear stress?

c. Calculate the maximum shear stress at the neutral axis of

the section.

Prepared by: Engr. Raquel A. Almendares

3. Two channels are welded at the tip of the flange to form a

box column.

Properties of each channel

A = 5350 mm2

d = 250 mm

bf = 100mm

tf = 15 mm

tw = 10 mm

Ix = 52x10^6 mm4

Iy = 5x10^6 mm4

Distance from centroidal y-axis of the channel to the outer

face of the web x= 29 mm. column height = 4 m and effective

length factor k = 1.0 both axes. The major x-axis of the

channel is the x -axis of the built-up column.

a. Calculate the axial compressive stress in the column due

to a concentric load of 800 kN

b. Determine the maximum bending stress in the column due to

a moment of 250 kN-m about the x-axis

c. What is the critical slenderness ratio of the build-up

column?

Prepared by: Engr. Raquel A. Almendares

4. Refer to the figure given:

Section of diagonal members

2 angles 75 mm x 75 mm x 6 mm

Area = 1858 mm2

rx = 23.6 mm

ry = 34.0 mm

a. What is the reaction (kN) at A?

b. What is the stress (kN) in member GD?

c. Calculate the allowable load (kN) in member GD. Use NSCP

for (Fa)
