FIRST ASSIGNMENT (TRANSPORT PHENOMENA)

Q. 1.A circular disc of diameter ‘D’ is rotated slowly in a high viscosity liquid of viscosity (μ)
at a small distance ‘h’ from the fixed stationary surface. Show that the torque required to
maintain an angular velocity ‘ω’ is given as

𝛑𝛚𝛍𝐃𝟒
𝐓=
𝟑𝟐𝐡

Q.2. In steelmaking, deoxidation of melt is executed through aluminum addition, which in

turn combines with oxygen to form alumina (Al2O3). This needs to be in the slag layer.
Determine the size of smallest alumina particles that will reach the slag layer from the steel
bottom two minutes after the steel is deoxidized, assuming the spherical shape for particles.
Given viscosity of Fe-0.5 wt %C steel melt as 6.1x10-3 N s m-2, temperature of steel melt =
1873K, depth of steel melt = 1.5m, density of steel = 7600 kg m-3 and density of alumina =
3320 kg m-3.

Q.3. Gasoline (sp. gr = 0.8) is flowing upwards a vertical pipeline which tapers from 300 mm
to 150 mm diameter. A gasoline differential manometer is connected between 300 mm and
150 mm pipe section to measure the flow rate. The distance between manometer tappings is
1 meter and gauge reading is 500 mm Hg (mercury). Find (i) Differential gauge reading in
terms of gasoline head (m) and (ii) rate of flow (m3/s). Neglect any friction and other losses
between tappings.
Q.4. Model tests are to be conducted to study the flow through a large valve having a 2ft
diameter inlet and carrying water at a flow rate of 30 ft 3s-1. The working fluid in the model is
water at the same temperature as that in the prototype. Complete geometric similarity exists
between model and prototype, and the model inlet diameter is 3 inch. Determine the
required flow rate in the model.
Q.5. The deflection of a cantilever beam (δ) depends upon tip load (W), length of beam (l),
area moment of inertia (I) and Young’s modulus (E). Perform a dimensional analysis to arrive
at the following expression
𝑊𝑙3
𝛿= , for small elastic deflections.

Q.6. Water is flowing over a flat plate and near the surface of the plate, water is following the
velocity distribution as per the following equation

𝑣𝑥 = 3𝑦 − 𝑦 3 ; with 𝑦 in mm, 𝑣𝑥 in cms-1,0≤ 𝑦≤1 mm. The density and kinematic viscosity of
water are 1000 kg m-3and 7x10-7m2s-1, respectively. Find the following
(a) Shear stress at x=x1on the plate surface
(b) Momentum flux at 𝑦 = 0.8 mm and x=x1 in the Y direction and
(c) Is there momentum flux in X direction at 𝑦 =0.8 mm and x=x1in X direction ?.If so,
evaluate the same.

Q.7. Two spheres of equal density and with different diameters fall through a liquid with
unknown density and viscosity both. The diameter of larger sphere is twice the diameter of
smaller one.
(a) Apply an appropriate force balance in order to arrive at the equation for the terminal
velocity of either sphere valid for any Reynolds number.
(b) If for both spheres, 103<ReD<2x105and f (friction factor) =0.42, then calculate the ration of
the terminal velocity of spheres.
(c) Assuming Stoke’s law to be applicable and for both the spheres ReD<1, calculate the
terminal velocities of two said spheres.
Q.8. A packed bed reduction chamber, with 15-meter height and 6 m diameter packed with
spherical metal oxide pellets (diameter = 3 mm). Reducing gas enters the top of the bed at
800 K and at a flow rate of 95kg s-1and exits the chamber at same temperature. What should
be the pressure at the top of the chamber if pressure is maintained at 1.4 x105Pa. Given, the
bed porosity =0.40, viscosity of the reducing gas at 800 K is 4.13 x 10-5N s m-2; density of the
reducing gas at 800 K and at atmospheric pressure is 0.5 kg m-3.
Q.9. A pipe 200 m long slopes down 1 in 100 and tapers from 600 mm diameter at highest
end to 300 mm diameter at lowest end. The pipe is carrying an oil of specific gravity 0.8. If the
pressure gauge at the higher end reads 60 KN/m2, then determine (i) velocities at two ends
and (ii) the pressure at the lower end assuming there is no loss.
Q.10. A geometrically similar model of an air duct is built to 1/25 scale and tested with water
(50 times more viscous and 800 times denser as compared with air). When tested under
dynamically similar conditions, the pressure drop is 2 bar in the model. Evaluate the
corresponding pressure drop in the full scale prototype.

Q.11. Water is flowing through a pipe of diameter 30cm at a velocity of 4m/s. Find the velocity
of oil flowing in another pipe of diameter 10cm, if the condition for dynamic similarity is
satisfied. The viscosity of water and oil is given by 0.01 poise and 0.025 poise. (sp. Gravity of
oil = 0.8).
