Analysis of New Age Pedestrian bridges on urban spaces / Synopsis
SYNOPSIS
INTRODUCTION:
Urban communities are constantly changing and developing and some of these spaces are
turning out to be less helpful or important for their time. “Were lazy unless there's a
reward, people usually seek the simplest route to a destination, which often means the
shortest path. We need a reward if we are to do extra work, such as taking the long way
around or going up / down steps. An urban designer's job is often to make people do this
extra work, to enrich personal experience and prompt social and economic interaction.”
[CITATION Mat \l 1033 ]As said above a well-designed pedestrian urban environment
can stimulate social, psychological, and physical security, as well as improve the quality
of life in the area. It can also help preserve and enhance the sense of belonging and
comfort in various places.
“In urban planning, public space has historically been described as "open space",
meaning the streets, parks and recreation areas, plazas and other publicly owned and
managed outdoor spaces, as opposed to the private domain of housing and work.
However, the recent evolutions of the forms of urban settlement and the growing number
and variety of semi-public spaces managed by private-public or entirely private
partnerships questions this notion inherited from a legal perspective. Somehow today,
public space needs to be understood as different from the public domain of the state and
its subdivisions, but rather as a space accessible to the public. In terms of law, it is
perhaps closer to the older concept of the "commons", although we have to recognize that
today, at least in the western world, every bit of land is now regulated by the laws of
property making it difficult to consider anything as common without encountering an
entitled owner and manager” (Blackmar 2006). Cities are getting smarter and the
solutions we develop must be sustainable from a social, economic and environmental
perspective. The urban quality of a space can be improved in many ways, the users play a
major role in enhancing the quality and features of the space of the spaces
As cities change, we need a new understanding of how to optimally use city areas. Tunnels
and bridges should no longer only be structures that facilitate transport – their areas should
offer an added value to the city and its citizens. Mobility is no longer merely about moving
from one point to another – it explores the way people’s actions relate to and affect them,
and the way they link with other people and the built environment. Bringing up such
structures also contributes to the region's economic development. It also attracts tourists
and become characteristic elements of the urban landscape.
The construction of a bridge improves the urban spatial context by considering the
surrounding buildings, surrounding views, climatic conditions, and actual needs of
pedestrians and locals. The purpose for public use of a pedestrian bridge is to primarily
satisfy the everyday functional needs of pedestrians and cyclists (i.e., non-motorized
traffic). Gathering or spending time in such public spaces is secondary. However,
pedestrian bridges represent a crossing that is not simply the physical crossing of a barrier;
rather, the crossing is an experience of movement, of spatial and sensory, primarily visual
stimuli.
AIM:
The intention of this topic is to focus on studying and understanding the influence
of pedestrian bridges on urban open spaces and also how they improve the qualities
of an urban space.
OBJECTIVE:
Studying the various aspects and values given to pedestrian bridges in Urban
design and planning.
Analyzing the activities and patterns of these bridges based on different location
and scenarios
Identifying bridges around the world that created such impacts.
Studying why such an intervention should be needed.
SCOPE OF STUDY:
The study will undertake a critical visual analysis of various pedestrian bridges of
the world which perform the function of accessibility and also its influence in
urban development
The study will also evaluate the various aspects governing their design, function,
location etc.
LIMITATIONS:
The data’s inferred from the study may not be applicable to every design and may
differ based on its location and contextual basis.
The study will only focus on the qualitative parameters of the pedestrian bridges.
Due to the current outbreak of Covid-19, the studies are limited to literature case
studies.
