Kenrick Ice McDonald: Filling in the Blanks with his Documentary

Quiet Masters – The History and Relevance of the Black Magical Artist
A Documentary by Ice McDonald: Master Magician, Director, and Producer

A GENTLEMAN asked another gentleman, “Do you want to hear a joke? What do you call a
black magician?” As the person tried to come up with a clever answer, the joke teller shouted,
“A magician, you racist!” The implication was that race shouldn’t have a bearing on a title.
I laughed so hard. Yes, I admit that the recipient of that joke was me. The reason I laughed
was because I had just tried to make that same point to a fellow magician. Many times
magicians are labeled by their race and the race of the magician precedes the word magician.
This is not the case with the Caucasian/European performer. For example, over the last few
years the magicians from South Korea have been winning almost every stage competitions.
I have overheard people label those artists as “The Koreans.” The same goes for the magical
artists from Spain, who are great close-up artists. They are referred to as Spanish magicians.
Let’s go back to the initial joke. “What do you call a
black magician?” That is a good question. The black
magician has always tried to define his or her identity in
the art of magic. Black magical artists are not included
in most conversations regarding magic and its history.
When they are included, there is very little said about
them and their contributions.
Recently, some people have just begun to recognize
and acknowledge that the first professional American
born magician was black. Richard Potter, born in 1783
in Massachusetts to a slave mother, became one of the
most successful magicians of his day. The advantage for
Potter was that Massachusetts outlawed slavery around
the year that he was born, which enabled him to achieve
more than the black magicians in the South. Individuals
who know a little about history will say, “I have

The modern-day black magicians have pulled inspiration from
the magicians back in history. The magic mantle has been

reasons for the lack of documentation varied. The two most common reasons
were 1) the inability to print or shoot pictures to promote themselves, and 2)
the nature of the times, i.e. racism and restrictions. Fortunately, through the
help of historians and many of the magicians’ surviving family members, I
was able to acquire never-before published photos and intimate details about
these historic figures.

There are hundreds and hundreds of black magical artists worldwide, and
with the explosion and resurgence of magic, we are seeing more talented
artists than ever before. Social media has allowed the art of magic to shine
brighter, giving access to individuals to see the performers who inspire them.

Lecture Notes
3:00 to 5:00 p.m. | Parlour of Prestidigitation*
(Magician Members In Good Standing Only)

February 3 (Saturday) ... Garrett Thomas

Popular close-up expert Garrett Thomas returns with a new lecture that will feature the fundamentals and structure in conversational
magic. He will redefine magic and its purpose, while pointing out that entertainment is not exactly the point of the art. Garrett will
present strategies for dealing with problem people and will include effects like a stand-up monte (with expansions) and both card and
coin work.

February 11 ... Dale Salwak

Drawing from decades as performer, producer, and teacher, Dale Salwak will share universal principles for getting the most out of our
magic. Audience members will be taught a routine, to music, and two current students from the ultra-private Chavez Studio of Magic
will perform some of their specialties.

February 18 ... Mark James

Mark’s lecture will cover material in every genre: kids’ shows, stand-up, close-up, impromptu magic, and mentalism. There will be
something for everyone. His lecture will range from self-working effects to more difficult sleights. Mark will include thought starters and
unfinished tricks that audience members can take their own way. This AMA lecture will be his only U.S. lecture this year.

February 25 ... Tom Stone & The Swedes

AMA 2015 Creative Fellowship recipient Tom Stone will talk about advanced misdirection, richly illustrated with original routines for
close-up and parlor. The lecture will be interjected by tricks and comments from a panel of his fellow Swedes; Axel Adler, Håkan Berg,
John Houdi, and Peter Gröning.
