This activity is relevant for her because dining out/eating
restaurant food is an occasional treat in her home.

Making a phone call using a telephone unit is a practical/life skill

for school-aged children. It will develop communication skills to
obtain needed information, goods, or services. It can boost the
learner’s confidence knowing that she can communicate with
persons outside her family and enhance her sense of responsibility,
as she takes on a task that can benefit the rest of her family.

Goals Yana will be able to order food from a restaurant for pick up by a
family member.

Activities Prior to the teaching session, the following tasks must be

accomplished:

from

b. Presentation 1. Initiation
 I will ask her about how much she likes to eat
restaurant food. I will then tell her that I’ll be teaching
her how to make a phone call to order food from a
restaurant.
 Activity will take 30 – 45 minutes.
 I will sit beside the client. Each of us will have a phone
unit/mobile phone for practice.

2. Activity proper
 Locate the phone unit.
 Lift the handset.
 Place the handset near the ear.
 Listen to the tone.
 Point out ready tone vs. a busy tone. (let learner hear a
ready tone vs. a busy tone)
 Dial the telephone number of restaurant
 Wait to be connected
 Greet the person at the other end of the line. (Good
morning/afternoon/evening)
 Introduce yourself and inform restaurant staff that you
would like to order food for takeout. (“Good morning!
I’m Yana Andigan. May I order food for takeout,
please?”)
 State your order. (“We would like to order….”)
 Provide other details, as needed. (Our phone number

 State when a family member will pick up. (My Dad will
pick up our order at ___am/pm.)
 End call (“Thank you. Goodbye!”)
 Place the handset back to the unit.

I will provide step-by-step instruction and demonstration. I

will ask Yana to perform a step after each demonstration. I
will provide concurrent feedback by saying, ‘that is correct’
for each step Yana performs correctly. I will then ask her
to perform a role-playing of the complete sequence. I will
provide feedback (knowledge of performance) by stating
the steps she performed well and have her repeat the steps
which she needs to practice.
