Primary Success
For The Adults….
Back to work so soon! T'was the night before school started
No more lounging until noon. When all through the town
Bye to watching late night shows. The parents were cheering
No more dancing 'till they close. It was a riotous sound!
Granny isn’t able to play. By eight the kids were washed
Baby, you can't spend the day. And tucked into bed,
All the housework was never done. While memories of homework
But the shopping sure was fun! Filled them with dread.
Trips to the beach were grand, New pencils, new folders,
With friends we walked the sands. New notebooks, too,
But it's back to work we go. New teachers, new friends,
For as we all know - Their anxiety grew.
Honey, we've run out of money! The parents just giggled
Author Unknown When they learned of this fright,
And shouted upstairs -
GO TO BED!
IT'S A SCHOOL NIGHT!

The holidays are over…… They all say that teachers

“What holidays?” I say - Have this cushy year
I did go to the beach With two months off each summer,
And my kids and I did play. It makes me shed a tear.
But every day, no matter what For teaching’s always with me
I did, or where I went, Especially with this grade.
From working in my garden The great responsibility
To camping in a tent, Never seems to fade.
September first was with me It seems odd to say this,
And thoughts of things ahead. And I’m sure it isn’t cool -
I planned when I was swimming But I’m glad the summer’s over
And while I lay in bed. And I am back at school!
Jean R.

A note: many of these poems have been in classrooms for years - some I used in the
1960s and they were not new then. I have tried to omit any with known authors, and
I would appreciate your help - if you know the author of a poem, please tell me and I
will remove it from the booklet. Thank you!

My First Day Names
See me skip. Cheer for your name, let’s hear your name.
See me run. Say it with a shout!
I’m going to school like everyone. Giggle your name and wiggle your name.
See me walk. Really let it out!
See me grin. Growl your name and howl your name.
When the bell goes, I go in. Stretch it until it’s long!
See me jump. Chant your name and pant your name.
See me play. Sing it like a song.
I’m in Grade One, hooray! Clap your name and snap your name.
Announce it loud and clear!
Spell your name and yell your name.
Tell the world you’re here!
(to the tune of "Did you Ever See
a Lassie")
Here we are together,
Together, together,
Here we are together,
Back at school again.
There's ____ , and ____,

Start the Day With a Smile Off to School We Go
This is the way we start the day (Tune: A-hunting We Will Go)
Start the day, start the day, Off to school we go,
This is the way we start the day, Oh, it's off to school we go,
So early in the morning. We'll take our lunch and ride the bus,
First we smile and shake a hand, With everyone we know.
Shake a hand, shake a hand, Off to school we go,
First we smile and shake a hand, Oh, it's off to school we go,
So early in the morning. We'll learn our ABC's and more,
Then we sit down quietly, With everyone we know.
Quietly, quietly,
Then we sit down quietly,
So early in the morning.
We listen very carefully, School Days
Carefully, carefully, The alarm clock rings,
We listen very carefully, You open your eyes.
So early in the morning. The day begins,
You have to rise.

Brush your teeth,

Comb your hair.
Brand new things
For you to wear.

Look both ways

This Is The Way We Start The Day As you cross the street.
(tune: London Bridge) Get on the bus
This is the way we start the day And find a seat.
Start the day, start the day,
This is the way we start the day, Today is the day
In Kindergarten. That school begins
First we smile and shake a hand You can hardly wait
Shake a hand, shake a hand. To meet your friends.
First we smile and shake a hand,
In Kindergarten. A very different teacher,
Then we it down quietly With a strange sounding name.
Quietly, quietly, I want my last year's teacher -
Then we sit down quietly Things will never be the same!
In Kindergarten.
We listen very carefully
Carefully, carefully,
We listen very carefully
In Kindergarten.

Classroom Routines
Quiet, quiet Open them, shut them,
Quiet as a mouse Give a little (great big) clap!
So no one will know Open them, shut them,
That we're in the house. Fold them in your lap.
Creep them, creep them, creep them,
Right up to your chin.
Lining Up Open up your little mouth
Every time I get in line, But don't let them in!
I stand so straight and tall; Creep them, creep them, creep them,
I keep my arms down by my side, Right up to the sky.
I do not move at all. Flutter them down and let them lie.
Open them, shut them,
My head is facing forward, Give a little (great big) clap!
My eyes look straight ahead; Open them, shut them,
My lips are closed, my eyes are open, Fold them in your lap.
Listening to what is said. Now we're ready to listen.

Lining Up Poem
I’m giving myself a great big hug,
I’m standing straight and tall.
I’m looking right in front of me.
I’m ready for the hall. The End of the Day
(whisper: And I’m not talking!) This is the way we say good-bye,
Say good-bye, say good-bye.
This is the way we say good-bye,
We Have Rules To all our friends at school!
We have rules at ____ school, Good-bye! See you on _____!
Rules when we’re in class.
We use inside voices and walking feet,
We don't touch the friends we meet.
And when we're working we stay in our seats, See You Later
'Cause we have rules See you later, alligator,
At _____ school. Bye-bye, butterfly,
Give a hug, ladybug,
Be sweet, parakeet,
The rule with glue is Blow a kiss, goldfish,
a little dab will do. See you soon, racoon,
Take care, polar bear,
Dot dot, does a lot! (glue) Out the door, dinosaur!

Weather Song (tune: Clementine) A Birthday Poem
What’s the weather? How many candles are on your cake?
What’s the weather? How many wishes will you make?
What’s the weather, everyone? Will you be six, seven or eight?
Is it windy? Is it cloudy? Is there rain? Isn’t it dreadfully hard to wait?
Or is there sun? Waiting for birthdays is always the worst!
If it doesn’t come soon I think I’ll burst!
_____ red candles are on my cake.
Today, I’ll have ____ wishes to make.
Today is ______________,
All day long,
All day long.
Yesterday was __________, Birthday Poem
Tomorrow will be ____________. Happy Birthday to you!
See them go, fast and slow. Squashed tomatoes and stew;
Eggs and bacon for breakfast,
Happy birthday to you!

Stuff an arm
into each sleeve,
put on your coat
before you leave.
Zip the zipper
right to the top,
and cover your head

You and Me
Smiles Go ‘Round I'd rather be a person
I like to smile. Than an animal in the fall.
I like to grin. It doesn't seem that
I like to be happy-hearted. Animals have much fun at all.
‘Cause happy faces, smiles and grins Some work so hard to store up food,
Seem to come back where they started! While others hibernate,
Cold and snow and ice are things
They don't appreciate.
But I can run and play with friends
You cannot give a smile away, Through fall and winter, too.
No matter what you do. I'd rather be a person having fun.
Whenever you give one away Wouldn't you?
It comes right back to you.

I Am Special
I am special,
And you are, too.
There’s one of me, My Promise
And there’s one of you. Each day I'll do my best,
And I won't do any less.
I am special My work will always please me,
Can’t you see? And I won't accept a mess.
No one else I'll colour very carefully.
Is just like me. My writing will be neat.
And I simply won't be happy
Til my papers are complete
I'll always do my homework,
School And I'll try on every test.
I like school. And I won't forget my promise--
I read and work and play. To do my very best!
I like school.
I learn new things each day.
I like school.
I write, I sing and run. Please and Thank You
I like school. Some special words we need to know
It's great to have such fun. And use them every day.
We must say “Please” and “Thank you”
At school, at home, at play.

Friends To Be Six
A friend is a person I can say the alphabet
Who wishes you well, Right through from A to Z.
And keeps all the secrets And print my name, so nice and neat-
You like to tell. Do you want to see?
Friends share their toys I can count
And story books, too. By ones and twos,
Friends can be older Ride a bike
Or younger than you. And tie my shoes.
Friends can be real It’s super duper
Or made up in your mind. To be six-
But, they’re always So tall and smart
Thoughtful and kind. And full of tricks!

I'm Very Happy to be Me

_______ is my hair,
_______ are my eyes.
I'm _______ years old,
I'm just the right size.
I am Special My name is _______
Hundreds of birds in the sky, And as you can see,
Hundreds of fish in the sea, I'm very happy to be me!
Hundreds of flowers in the field
But there's only one of me!
Growing Tall
The yellow sunflower grows so high.
It almost seems to touch the sky.
One or Two Mother says I'm growing, too.
I like myself. Sunflower, will I be as big as you?
I like me fine.
I play by myself,
A lot of the time.

I like you, too.

I like you fine.
We play together
A lot of the time.

I play alone.
I play with you.
Fun can be had
By one or two!

Days of the Week
To the Adam's Family tune.... X, X and Y and Z
Days of the week (snap snap) I'll really be tired
Days of the week (snap snap) When I go to bed.
Days of the week sshhh.......
Days of the week
Days of the week (snap snap)

There's Sunday and there's Monday

There's Tuesday and there's Wednesday
There's Thursday and there's Friday
And then there's Saturday!

Days of the week (snap snap) Pencil Magic

Days of the week (snap snap) I like a yellow pencil,
Days of the week A shiny yellow pencil
Days of the week With a rub-away eraser
Days of the week (snap snap) And a point all sharply black.
I can draw all kinds of pictures
Of animals, things, and people -
With a shiny yellow pencil
Red, red, red, touch your head. There isn't a thing I lack!
Blue, blue, blue, tie your shoe. If I want a brand new spaceship
Brown, brown, brown, touch the ground. Or a secret house in a treetop
White, white, white, take a bite. Or a friendly bear to play with
Black, black, black, touch your back. Or eleven ducks on a pond,
Purple, purple, purple, draw a circle. I've only to use my pencil
Pink, pink, pink, give a wink. And there they are on the paper-
Gray, gray, gray, shout hurray! Oh, a shiny yellow pencil
Is a magical fairy wand!

Something told the wild geese We say hello to Autumn leaves
It was time to go. New teachers and the school.
Though the fields lay golden We say good-bye to vacation time
Something whispered, “Snow”. And swimming in the pool.
We say hello to shorter days
Something told the wild geese And longer, darker nights.
It was time to fly. We say good-bye to family trips
Summer sun was on their wings, And seeing all the sights.
Winter in their cry.

October is
A month of change,
It really does
Seem very strange.
Suddenly
The trees are bare,
And signs of frost
Are in the air.
The summer is over
The trees are all bare.
There is mist in the garden
And frost in the air. September
The meadows are empty, A road like brown ribbon
The apples are picked. A sky that is blue
All over my street A forest of green
There are leaves to be kicked! With that sky peeping through.
Asters, deep purple,
A grasshopper's call,
Today it is summer,
I love the month of September, Tomorrow is fall.
The nights are dry and cool.
The days are warm and sunny
And we all go back to school!

October
Leaves are glowing in the air
Leaves are blowing everywhere.
We go down the road to see
Apples dancing on a tree.

15
October Time Five Little Leaves
October time is pumpkin time. Five little leaves so bright and gay
The nicest time of year, Were dancing about on a tree one day
When all the pumpkins light their eyes The wind came blowing through the town
And grin from ear to ear. Whooooo
Five little leaves came tumbling down
Five, four, three, two, one.

I Love Fall
I love fall! Fall is exciting.
It's apples and cider.
Autumn Wind It's an airborne spider.
When autumn wind goes running It's pumpkins in bins.
It does some magic things. It's burrs on dog's chins.
It gives the shadows dancing shoes, It's wind blowing leaves.
It gives the bright leaves wings - It's chilly red knees.
When autumn wind goes running. It's nuts on the ground.
It's a crisp dry sound.
It curls the bonfire's tail of smoke It's green leaves turning
And shares a little whispered joke And the smell of them burning.
With cornstalks who delight to prattle, It's clouds in the sky.
It turns a seed pod into a rattle - It's fall. That's why.........
When autumn wind goes running. I love fall.

Red leaves and yellow leaves A September Rainbow

Orange leaves and brown, In September
Leaves are dancing everywhere Apples are red.
Happily dancing down. Leaves of yellow
Fall on my head.
The grass is brown,
The sky is blue,
Autumn Leaves Flowers of purple,
Leaves don't just fall -- they rustle. And orange squash, too.
When the cool wind blows, they hustle. Some trees have leaves
Leaves don't just fall -- they whirl. That still are green
When the cool winds blows, they twirl. A rainbow of colour
Leaves don't just fall -- they prance. Can be seen!
They pick themselves up and
dance, dance, dance!

16
I like to shuffle on my way, The Scarecrow
Through piles of leaves on an Autumn day. The scarecrow stands
The leaves aren't leaves at all to me. With hanging hands,
They are cornflakes falling from the tree! Beside the farmer's stile.
He scares the jay and crow away.
With just a painted smile.

Autumn Bird Song

Over the housetops,
Over the trees,
Winging their way
In a stiff fall breeze.

A flock of birds
Is flying along
Southward, for winter, The Wind
Singing a song. The wind can never quite decide
Exactly what to do
Singing a song With all the leaves that dance about
They all like to sing, When summer months are through.
"We'll see you again I've seen it twist and twirl each leaf
When it's spring, spring, spring." Into a pile and then
Turn right around and fling them all
About the yard again.

"Come, little leaves," said the wind one day,

"Come o'er the meadows with me and play: Scarecrows
Put on your dresses of red and gold - Scarecrows have a funny job,
For summer is gone and the days grow cold." In cornfields wild with birds,
They chase and shoo to protect the crops
Without a single word.

Leaves in the autumn came tumbling down, The scarecrow must pretend all day.
Scarlet and yellow, russet and brown, He is a mighty force
Leaves in the garden were swept in a heap, Do you suppose when nightfall comes
Trees were undressing ready for sleep. He snacks on corn? Of course!

Dancing Leaves October

Red leaves and yellow leaves Leaves are glowing in the air.
Orange leaves and brown Leaves are blowing everywhere.
Leaves are dancing everywhere We go down the road to see
Happily dancing down Apples dancing on a tree.

Leaves The Birds
Little leaves, little leaves, Good-bye, little birds, good-bye!
High up in the trees, I see you swiftly fly
Little leaves, little leaves, Away to the south, where the sky is blue
Swinging in the breeze. And flowers and sunshine wait for you.
Autumn comes along Good-bye, little birds, good-bye!
And they change from red to brown
Winter comes along.
And they flutter to
the ground. In thFall (sing to “She'll Be Coming Round the
