I get up in the morning hoping to accomplish something in my life.
That "something" is what
drives me every day. For me, it is my strong desire to contribute to society and leave each place
where I find myself in a better condition than when I arrived. I believe that the best way to
accomplish this is to assist them in understanding the earth's mechanism and how to maximize its
potential to not only complement but also improve our lives. My fascination with the earth, as
well as my desire to contribute to society, led me to pursue a degree in geology. As a result of
my desire for knowledge to create and innovate, I became a member of my school's Nigeria
Mining and Geosciences local chapter and the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationist
association after being admitted to university. I also joined an organization called Leaf Green
Africa, where I serve as the chief financial officer. We use GIS and Remote Sensing to monitor
climate change and carry out tree planting projects.
After my second year in the university, I had the opportunity to work at Solomay Geoservices, a
geophysical company where we carried out numerous water drilling projects and applied
geophysics to archeological studies and environmental science. I had the opportunity to visit
Imakun-Omi, a small village in Ogun State, Nigeria, where I observed the surficial occurrence of
bitumen, which was thought to be the cause of the black coloration of the water in the
environment. What has most fascinated me about my experience thus far is seeing the world
stripped bare and being able to tell its story using my geological knowledge.
The production and sustainability of energy has piqued my interest the most, with branches
ranging from petroleum geology and geophysics to geomechanics and mining engineering. The
roles geophyscists play in this sector, for example, locating energy sources using techniques such
as seismic surveys and then extracting it using their skills in rock mechanics is critical for a
nation's development and parallel to what I hope to achieve in my career. Geophysics is a rich and diverse subject that, while primarily scientific in nature, allows for a great deal of creative
thought. In my first year of university, I decided to study subjects that were a good mix of
creativity and technicality. Physics lessons taught me to approach problems more logically. Lab
sessions provided me with a venue to hone my practical skills, such as data collection and
interpretation. In addition, insights in differential equations and graphs gained in mathematics
and statistics have enabled me to use statistical data produced by geological firms.
Aside from studying, I enjoy playing soccer. I am the team's captain. Because of that position, I
was able to channel my leadership abilities and collaborate with people from various
backgrounds. In addition, my involvement in the department's association, where I serve as the
financial secretary, has taught me how to negotiate with others and accept constructive criticism.
I hope that one day, with the knowledge that your university can provide, I will be a part of a
geologist community that is constantly conducting research on clean energy production and its
sustainability.
I am writing to express my support for my application to your prestigious Master's Degree
Program at Kent State University because I want to devote my life to the energy industry,
searching for cleaner energy sources that can be harnessed in the most environmentally
responsible ways possible. Energy is required to help power our world, and I am eager to
participate in this process because energy improves our lives in a variety of ways. In the years
following my completion of your prestigious Master's Program at Kent State University, my
long-term goal is to become a well-respected geologist.
