―Transportation Engineering‖
By: Roda, Raiyennelou
When I was a kid, I saw an under construction road in my hometown. It was amazing
to see the heavy machines running, the workers hard at work, and the progress of the
road taking shape. It was like a dream come true for me to see the construction
underway. The sight of it was an encouragement for me to work hard and achieve my
goals. It taught me that with hard work and dedication, we can achieve anything. It
also made me realize my duties and responsibilities as a citizen to contribute towards
the development of my country.
A civil engineer can pursue a variety of career paths, including working in project
management, consulting, construction, research, and teaching. Some specific job titles
for civil engineers include structural engineer, environmental engineer, transportation
engineer, construction engineer, and water resources engineer.
As a future licensed professional civil engineer, I have high hopes for my career. I
would like to be able to work on projects that have a real impact on the environment
and community. This could be anything from designing and building bridges and
roads to designing sustainable energy sources and helping to reduce energy
consumption.
I also want to be able to work with the local community on projects that help to make
the area a better place for everyone to live. I want to be able to make a difference with
the work I do, whether it is designing a bridge that will connect two communities and
improve transportation or designing a green energy source that will help reduce
emissions and create jobs in the area. I would also like to be part of projects that help
to make people‘s lives better, such as improving water quality or creating new parks
and recreation areas.
The practicality of my goals is that they are achievable. With the right education and
experience, I can become a successful civil engineer and make a positive impact on
the environment and the community.
For me, when I graduate and become a Licensed Professional Engineer. Maybe my
chosen job is construction engineer. What is Construction Engineer? A Construction
Engineer is a person who combines a passion for engineering with a drive to build
something from the ground up. They are responsible for the planning and execution
of construction projects, from initial design to completion. This involves overseeing
the budget, making sure materials and equipment are ordered properly, and
coordinating with subcontractors to ensure that all parts of the project are completed
as efficiently as possible.
One advantage of being a Construction Engineer is the opportunity to work on a
variety of projects. Construction Engineers work on projects ranging from small
residential remodels to large-scale commercial projects. This variety of projects
allows Construction Engineers to develop a wide variety of skills and knowledge.
Additionally, Construction Engineers are typically able to take on a leadership role in
the projects they work on, which can be a rewarding experience.
A career in Construction Engineering is a rewarding and challenging one that
requires a combination of technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills. As a
Construction Engineer, I will be responsible for the design, planning, and execution
of construction projects. This includes overseeing the design and construction of
residential, commercial, industrial, and public works projects. It is a demanding job,
and requires a great deal of dedication and hard work.
Once I have the necessary qualifications and experience, I can apply for positions in
the field. The job market is competitive, so I will need to be able to demonstrate my
technical knowledge, as well as my ability to interact with and motivate others.
As a Construction Engineer, I will be expected to make sacrifices for the success of
my projects. I will spend long hours on the job, and be required to travel to various
sites to inspect construction progress and make changes as needed. I will also be
responsible for managing budgets and ensuring that projects are completed on time
and within budget. This can be stressful, but it can also be very rewarding when the
project is finished.
Challenges will arise throughout my career in Construction Engineering. As a leader,
I will be expected to make decisions that are in the best interests of the project, as
well as the team. I will also need to be able to handle difficult situations and think on
my feet. It is important to be able to stay organized and prioritize tasks in order to
ensure that projects are completed on time and to the highest standards.
In conclusion, construction engineers have achieved a great deal of success in their
field. They have revolutionized the construction industry with innovative designs,
creative solutions and a dedication to excellence. However, their role is not without
its challenges. Construction engineers must also face the reality of failure, as projects
can be costly, time-consuming and unpredictable. Despite these obstacles,
construction engineers continue to devote their time and effort to ensure that projects
are completed with the highest standards of quality and safety. Their dedication and
hard work is an example of what can be achieved with dedication and a commitment
to excellence.
"When you didn't get what you wanted, don't get frustrated. What's yours will
always be meant to be yours. No one can change that," these are the words a stranger
told me when I was still in elementary.
I never expected this of path for myself. My mom died when I was three after
giving birth to my brother. I can still remember how I stared at mom's coffin
watching her pretty face. The memory of me asking my father, "When will mom
awake?" as I watch her lifeless thinking she was just asleep is still fresh in my mind.
It was a devastating moment for
starting back then, I always blamed myself for what myself.
We moved to Kipalbig for good. However, things didn‘t worked out for us.
My father got his hand injured and no one was left to take care of us and my brother.
My aunts and uncles were busy. I can‘t blame them. They also have their own
children to take care of. So we moved again.
My father sent us to Norala where I stayed for 5 years. There, I met a woman
— specifically my aunt— who became like my second mother. She is a minister
assigned in a Children‘s ministry at church and through her, I knew Jesus. She taught
me many things such as household chores as well as guided me academically. She
inculcated moral values in my veins for my mom couldn‘t do it for she‘s gone. I
really wish to visit her soon.
At Norala, I also found my first crush. Meeting him is the most hilarious thing
that ever happened in my life. Imagine, two kindergarten students promising to marry
each other after witnessing a wedding, just out of curiosity. Exactly! Hysterical right?
It really happened. My aunt is a close friend of his mom so we were always together
back then.
Fast forward, due to the poverty that was rampant there, my uncle brought us
back to Kipalbig. There, I continued my studies. I encountered different people with
different principles in life. These people became my friends and I really enjoyed
being with them.
Yet, everything has its own season. There is a time to rejoice and a time to
mourn. This time, not because we‘re moving again but because I lost a loved one—
my best friend. She died due to kidney problems. I was 15 when it happened. Oh, how
fleeting the human life is.
During pandemic, most of the time, I was at church. We had formed a close
bond and they became my bests of friends. It was a fun relationship. We‘ve gone
through ups during the pandemic. Specifically, we were quarantined because during
our record for praise and worship, a member— my closest friend, became infected
which made us her close contact during that time. Praise God that none of us got
infected as well.
Well, as time flows like the river, I graduated from senior high school at Tupi
National High School. Since it was pandemic, I never really got to know my
classmates better. I have joined them in some of our activities but that was only for a
short period of time. It was so short that I haven‘t really know them one by one.
I really have decided about the degree that I will be taking. I really wanted to
go to medical school and study medicine. I prayed that my heart‘s desire would be
granted. However, the Lord has his own plan— in which I believed was the best.
Every door that I wanted to walk through were closely locked. They weren‘t meant
for me.
I can remember how I cried all night. I was like a child mourning for the
lollipop that was stolen from me. It is a painful experience, as I have dreamt about it
ever since. It was like a sword that pierced my heart, leaving it bleeding as an ashes
was poured unto it.
I enrolled in a school that I never imagined I would belong to. I took a course that I
didn‘t think I would like to. I really thought to myself that it would be a nightmare
for I really didn‘t like what I was doing. Well, I still think of that though, knowing
how hard it is.
My life is full of ‗yets‘ and ‗however‘. This time, the biggest plot twist is that,
I enjoyed. Despite of studying a course that I didn‘t like and enrolling at the school I
never thought of, I met new people with different capabilities. I encountered people
with diverse principles, experiences and backgrounds. I saw myself enjoying as I
brainstorm on the mathematical problems in front of me. I can really say, ―Oh, so
this is the reason why.‖
―Expect the unexpected,‖ they say. Imagining everything that was happened,
I never thought of becoming the person I am right now. This is not the future that I
imagined to be. Indeed, things come and go. Nevertheless, what‘s yours will always
be yours. It will have its own way towards you. Whether you want it or not, dreamt of
it or not, no one can take that from you. Just trust
the process.
A Letter to the Future Me
By: Umani, Rizalyn
How are you? I just want to ask in case no
one did.
First things first. I hope we‘re still good
friends with our crush in this timeline. He is such
a wonderful man and a smart one. Kidding aside, I
pray that you are happy.
As your past self, I really have big dreams
for the both of us. I hope that in your time, we
have achieved it one by one. So how‘s life? Have
you met ―the one?‖ If yes, I hope that he takes care of you the way you deserved to
be.
Did you remember? It is so nostalgic to reminisce the childhood we have
shared. It brings smile to me how we used to go after the tricycle when our Papa
Bebot drove to the farm. We were like a nincompoop back then when we cried
because of a dead ant who drowned in the water due to the rainwater. I miss those
good old days.
You better not forget Nanay Nene and Mama Bing who took care of you a
great deal. Inculcate the things you have learned from them deep in your bones. It will
help you to live as a wise woman. Those lessons penetrated your soul before, causing
you to turn from your old ways, grow and bloom like a beautiful flower. You have to
write them down.
Is Father alright? Did he have health problems or maintenance? Is our house
complete? Who finished it? How about brother, is he doing good in class? He better
took care of Father and helped you with everything. We never really had a house back
then. I hope they are not giving you a hard time now.
Are you still in contact with Pastor Ivan? He was like your brother. He taught
you piano and so many things in life that you will really need at work. Is he a teacher
at Shekinah now? How many kids did he have? Did the Siargao plan come to
success? I hope so. You used to love Justice also, his cat. You cry when this cat left
was so hilarious by the way.
Think of Haniel, Ban-ban, Sofia, Jan-jan, Ff (your cousin who you used to call
Jep-jep) and Bb. They were your closest friends. They call you 200 ms because it
would really took about 15 minutes until you understand their jokes. They were
bullies but they really loved you. You used to serve the Lord at church together. I
hope you were still intact and still serving Him together.
How about Chen-chen? She is your best of closest friends. She influenced you
greatly with your relationship with the Lord. How is her ministry? Is she now a
missionary? Where was she then? Have you visited her?
Remember Kim? How about Jescelton? Christine? Maki? Nezzery? Your
mama Sheryn and Papa Rj? Mich? Yen? Ritch? Jiane? Isaiah? Reyrey? And all of you
first year blockmates? They are absolutely amazing group of people. They were
brilliant, kind and considerate. I hope you are still together.
I have so many question that I want to ask about the people who greatly
influenced our lives. But this letter can‘t contain what I wanted to say. I am sure you
are a graduate now. I didn‘t specify what year though. I really hope we graduated on
time.
I understand darling. It‘s hard. We were at the verge of giving up during our
freshmen years also. You took a degree you didn‘t want to. It is fine. Don‘t be so
harsh on yourself.
We really wanted to be a Radiologist back then. However, it is not the will of
the Lord. We took this course. I hope you enjoyed it the way I do now. I hope your
love for math and logical thinking did not fade.
You are an adult now. I know things are way too different. You have bigger
responsibilities. Bigger opportunities may have come but I pray that the lord have
granted our heart‘s desires according to his plan.
I am torn between pursuing Chemical Engineer and full time lady minister. I
am contemplating about taking up units for chemical engineering or should I enter
bible School. I am not really sure with my heart‘s motive. I really want to ask you
what have you chose but I know, no one can ever answer me except Him who
orchestrates everything.
To be honest I am not really sure of what I wanted to do next. Maybe a
researcher will do but my heart is not on it. I love discovering new things but not to
the point that I want to spend my whole life discovering many things.
A structural designer? It could work. I love designing houses and buildings
after all. Watching my designs come into reality is one of the things that satisfy me. It
brings excitement to every cell. However, it is doesn‘t last that long. My interest fades
as time goes by. It is like a temporary but repeating beat.
I want to be a full time minister but I don‘t know if I really have the proper
kind of heart or I just wanted to meet my friends who became Pastors. Discernment is
what you really need when it comes to determining your calling.
Being a Chemical Engineer is one of my choices. In fact, if I was not exposed
to medical courses ideas, this will be my first choice. However, as I said, things are
different now. It doesn‘t satisfy me anymore.
Here is the catch. What I wanted now is beyond this degree, title or honor that
this world can offer. I want to orbit the earth, travel unto the cosmos clouds, touch the
stars, see the auroras, watch the sun set above the skies, swim across the pacific ocean
dive beneath the Mariana‘s trench and dance like the rain on the roof.
Perhaps what I am really doing right now is surviving. I was not for aiming
anything yet but to finish this degree. I am still praying for it. The answers are on its
way anyway. Maybe I will decide about it in the upcoming years. What do you think
should I do?
Let's start with my life. I'm Mark Jason Dullano. In all honesty, I'm in a lot of trouble
and my life is a shambles. I occasionally question myself, "How can I get past this?" since I
have no idea.
My life's journey has been filled with heartbreaks, difficulties, and problems. Even at
a young age, I am acutely aware that our family is not contented in the same way as others.
We are a dysfunctional family, to put it briefly. And I find it difficult as a student to deal with
these kinds of difficulties. Some of these difficulties will put my courage, strength, weakness,
and faith to the test.
But I constantly bear in mind that there will be hurdles along the way and that the
journey will not always be easy for us. in order to proceed in the proper direction.
After many issues, difficulties, and obstacles, I remembered how lovely my life is.
Sometimes, however, those challenges and obstacles are actually a blessing to us.
The only thing left for me to do is to move forward with the knowledge I have
gathered from my experiences and lessons learnt, which will ultimately make me a stronger
person.
Despite all the difficulties, I want to thank everyone who has supported me,
encouraged me, and given me the willpower to carry on with my path.
My life is currently going well, and I can already sense changes coming. In the end, I
want to give God praise for these blessings in my life.
"Everything that occurs in our lives has a purpose, and occasionally that means I have
hurdles to overcome."
Transportation Engineering
By: Mark Jason Dullano
The majority of the time, transportation engineers operate in an office setting, but some
positions call for them to travel outside of the building to coordinate and analyze construction
projects.
You can apply for licensing as a professional engineer to improve your career chances
and income possibilities as a transportation engineer (PE). With a PE license, engineers
become qualified to develop, sign and seal, and submit engineering plans for clients. On
average, transportation engineers with a PE license make roughly 30,000 pesos more more
per month than their counterparts without a license.
Field civil engineers must also be familiar with construction methods and materials.
They must be able to offer the optimal procedures and materials for a particular
project, based on criteria such as price, toughness, and environmental effects. The most recent
innovations in construction technology must also be known to them, and they must be able to
incorporate them into their projects.
Cost management and control skills are also a requirement for field civil engineers. The
ability to find ways to lower the project's overall cost and locate opportunities for cost savings
without sacrificing security or quality. They must also maintain correct records, maintaining
cost data for projects and delivering frequent cost reports to the project manager or client.
In conclusion, the field of civil engineering is both demanding and lucrative, with
countless opportunities for development and growth. As an aspiring civil engineer, the impact
that can be made on the globe is substantial, and there are countless opportunities. based on a
solid basis. Anyone can achieve success in mathematics and science with a formal education
and relevant experience an effective civil engineer who has a favorable social impact.
The Journey
By: Gimmena, Kyle
A baby was born in the night of March 16, 2000. She was named by her parents as
Kyle Hillary Gimena. That‘s me. I‘m that baby and grew up loving music, games, and art. But
even after all those interests, I didn‘t really want it to be my career. I don‘t want to burn all
the fuel from all my interests.
When I turned around 10 years old I realized that my parents couldn't financially
support me in that course, so I gave up with that dream, but it was also around that time that I
saw a movie about a psychologist. Since I was a child, I've always been a quiet person who
loves to observe human behavior. My parents can also financially support me with that
course, but my mother has always been opposed to it, so I never really drown myself in that
dream.
In high school, I no longer had a specific career goal. Every time a teacher asks us
about our dream jobs, I simply tell them that I wanted to be a doctor, even though I know I
will not pursue it. As a result, I was "dreamless" throughout high school. Though I
was listening to my classmates' dream courses, Engineering was one of the ideal dream jobs
that they wanted; it rang a bell with me, but I never really considered it at the time.
During my senior year of high school, a group of people came to our school and
offered us scholarships for industrial design from one of Bangkok's universities. They gave us
exams, interviews, and tasks to draw. Among all the students who applied for the scholarship,
I was the only one who received the full scholarship. My parents convinced me to take it
since it‘s a once on a blue moon opportunity, so I did. I took the IELTS examination and
enrolled at that university. But personal circumstances forced me to remain in the Philippines.
I didn't know what to do here after that because I had been "dreamless" my entire high school
career.
Remember when I mentioned that the engineering struck a chord with me? It rang
again, but this time I did some research on it, and it piqued my interest. So I decided to pursue
engineering. Unfortunately, all of the schools in General Santos City had already begun at the
time, and I had to wait for the entrance exams to reopen. Mindanao State University was my
choice because they have a strong engineering program, and luckily I passed.
As things appear to be going well, I unfortunately ran out of Civil Engineering
program slots because I enrolled late since I was out of town at the time. I still
wanted to be an engineer, so I chose BS Mathematics because the majority of its subjects can
be credited
once I change my major. Another year behind my cohort won't hurt, right? Well,
that‘s incorrect. I received my schedule for changing my course a week before the class
began, and unfortunately, one of the building's employees got Covid-19 and had to quarantine
everyone. They had no choice but to enroll us in BS Mathematics because it was already close
to the start of the school year. So I studied it for another year. I was depressed, and it made
me think that engineering might not be for me.
My sister was already in college the following year. She also wanted to be an
engineer. She was looking for a school that provides quality engineering education and came
across South East Asian Institute of Technology. I asked for a sign that if I ever pass their
entrance exam, engineering is still a viable option for me. So my sister and I took the exam
together and both passed. I know I'm far behind my batch mates, but it doesn‘t really bother
me anymore.
So many things happened before I ended up getting this course, and I intend to persist
in it even though I may be required to extend it another year/s due to the possibility of failing
some subjects. I know God has plans and has His reasons for everything that has happened to
me. I will view all those experiences as blessings in disguise. No matter how difficult my
journey will become, I will remain patient and grateful.
Transportation Engineering
By: Kyle Gimmena
Transportation engineering is a field of civil engineering that deals with the design,
construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation systems and infrastructure. This
includes highways, roads, bridges, public transit systems, airports, and ports. The goal of
transportation engineering is to provide safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation options
for people and goods.
One of the main responsibilities of transportation engineers is the design and
construction of roads, highways, and bridges. This includes determining the best alignment
for a new road or highway, designing the road to meet the needs of all users (such as cars,
buses, and bicycles), and ensuring that the road or bridge can withstand the loads and forces it
will be subjected to over its lifetime.
Transportation engineers also play a key role in the planning and development of
public transit systems, such as buses and trains. This includes determining the best routes for
the transit system, designing stations and stops, and ensuring that the system is able to
accommodate the needs of all users, including those with disabilities.
In addition, transportation engineers are involved in the planning and design of
airports and ports. This includes determining the best location for a new airport, designing the
runways, taxiways, and terminal buildings, and ensuring that the airport can handle the
expected number of passengers and aircraft. At ports, engineers work on designing and
maintaining the infrastructure to handle cargo, such as docks and cranes.
One of the major challenges facing transportation engineers today is addressing the
problem of traffic congestion. This includes finding ways to reduce the number of cars on the
road, such as through the use of carpooling and public transit, and finding ways to make
traffic flow more efficiently, such as through the use of intelligent transportation systems
(ITS). ITS uses technology such as sensors and cameras to monitor traffic flow and adjust
traffic signals and other traffic management strategies in real-time to keep traffic moving.
Pursuing a career in structural engineering was not really a lifelong dream of mine.
From a young age, my dream was not related to engineering at all. I have been fascinated by
the design and construction of buildings and other structures after I graduated high school and
made research about it, till then, I obtained the eager to learn more about the science and
mathematics behind these structures.
After graduating from high school, I became more interested in structural engineering
after conducting additional research on engineering where complex building designs were
constructed. They turned architects' imaginations into reality. I was immediately drawn to its
complexity and knew it was the field I never knew I wanted to work in.
I didn‘t get the chance to take the civil engineering course right away. From the
university that I enrolled before, the slot for civil engineering was already full. I‘ve decided to
take BS Mathematics as an alternative so that majority of my subjects will be credited once
I‘ll shift to my desired course. But things are not as easy as I thought it would be. One of the
staff from the building accommodation office that‘s in charge of shifting courses had Covid19
and had to quarantine the entire staff within the building. My shift enrolment was scheduled a
week before the class began, and because of the circumstances, they enrolled us in BS
Mathematics since there was no time left for the process if we waited for their quarantine to
end. I had to continue the course for another year. My sister was starting college, and she also
wanted to be an engineer. She looked for schools that provide quality education for the course
that we want, and we found the school where we are now. I took the entrance exam and was
fortunate to be accepted.
Once I graduate, I will apply what I‘ve learned in the classroom to real-world projects.
I‘ll get the opportunity to work on a number of structural engineering projects, including
designing and building a small bridge, designing and constructing a small building, and
working on a team to design and construct a large steel structure. These projects will help me
understand the practical applications of the concepts I‘ll learn in class and gave me a sense of
what it would be like to work as a structural engineer. I decided to pursue a graduate degree in
structural engineering afterwards. I wantto further my education and gain a deeper
understanding of the subject matter. In graduate school, I‘ll take a variety of advanced classes
that covered the latest research and developments in structural engineering. I‘ll also work on a
number of research projects, including studying the behavior of steel structures under extreme
loading conditions and developing new methods for analyzing the performance of concrete
structures.
After completing my graduate degree, I am ready to enter the workforce as a structural
engineer. I hope to be able to secure a job with a large engineering firm that specializes in the
design and construction of buildings and other structures. In this role, I‘ll be able to work on a
wide range of projects, from small residential buildings to large commercial structures. I‘ll
also be able to apply what I‘ve learned in college and graduate school to real-world problems
and have gained a great deal of experience in the field.
I know pursuing a career in structural engineering will be an incredibly rewarding
experience. I‘ll be able to combine my passion for the subject matter with my love of
problem-solving and be able to make a real impact in the world. I‘ll be able to design
and build structures that will stand the test of time and that will be used by people for
years to come. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work in this field and am
excited to see what the future holds.
In conclusion, civil engineering is a both challenging and rewarding career that offers
endless possibilities for development and success. One can profoundly make a difference as a
future civil engineer, and there are countless opportunities. Anyone can succeed as a civil
engineer and contribute to society if they have a firm foundation in mathematics and science,
advanced education, and real-world experience.
PAGPATI: CIVILived He Can
By:Selma, Reynaldo
When I was young, there used to be a cartoon on the TV5 channel named ―Bob the
Builder.‖ This was the first time, as a child, that I got interested in making a building or
constructing infrastructure. So after that, I used to watch it regularly to fulfill my happiness. I
was also inspired watching my father simply renovate our house; he looked like a real and
professional engineer as he designed and constructed it to be better. As a child, I also want to
build a home, design an infrastructure, and make a building. I want to be like him and become
a real engineer someday. So that‘s the time when I dream of having an engineer in our family.
But while growing up, a lot of things came to my mind. I started having negative
thoughts about whether I wanted to pursue the dream that I really wanted to be or if it was
just my childhood dream that a cartoon show inspired me to pursue. I question myself: Why
do I want to be a civil engineer? I honestly did not know the answer to this question myself. I
was extremely confused when it came to choosing a career. There were so many fields that
interested me that I found it difficult to make up my mind. Then I read about civil
engineering, an occupation involving the construction of buildings, roads, and bridges. I
looked further into civil engineering. I began to like many aspects of this career and to
remember how my childhood cartoons and my father affected my future.
Throughout my studies in SEAIT-INC taking a course of Bachelor of Science in Civil
Engineering, I experience a lot of changes in myself and a little of adjustment cause it‘s been
2 years ago since the school has the face to face class due to the pandemic. The strand that I
took when I was in Senior High School level was not align to the subjects of my
course now so I also struggling to catch it up. I found it challenging rather than
difficult, maybe the most difficult subjects were those dealing with higher mathematics
applications . Most useful things I learned were everything I‘ve learned not just academically
but patience and focus. Passing exams, quizzes and even seat works some would say it‘s not
so easy. You have to burn your candle and stay focus or else you‘ll shift to another course as
many have been. The most important is to stay focused, study hard and don‘t lose your
burning passion to become a future engineer. I had difficulties in studying the calculus and
algebra subjects but through hard work, patience and determination I was able to make it.
Nevertheless the course I took was indeed challenging. My love for Mathematics really
did help me a lot, of course I wouldn‘t be enrolling on the course if I hated the subject. As I
had my major subjects, the learning process became enjoyable. Our professors were good
enough to insert current events that are in line with the subject during discussions. This
actually helped us, the students, to understand more the subject and its relevance to the real
world. Civil Engineering is really interesting. Its scope is very broad and we call it the mother
of engineering. Some people say it‘s very difficult but in my case, I enjoy learning new
things. After all, I realized that nothing is impossible with God to achieve one‘s goal in
life. The lessons I learned are ―Believe in yourself that you can make it‖ and ―Do your best
and God will do the rest‖. Being a child of not rich parents, I had to accept whatever things I
had. What I had was my determination to finish the course and become an engineer some day.
Keeping my eyes fixed on the objective, weighing my achievements over my misses,
targeting improvement and most importantly, never giving up is my everyday goal because
hard work always pays. The habit when we still study in college are to being focus to your
study, make your study as your friend, don‘t be shy to ask if you did not understand the
subject and put to your heart and have a passion to your study. One day you will be victorious
and your parent will be proud of you. Hard work and persistence are the keys to success.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design,
construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including
public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewage systems, pipelines,
structural components of buildings, and railways. The path to becoming a civil engineer
begins with a rigorous curriculum rooted in practical applications of mathematics and science.
Civil engineering programs are often selective and competitive, and many who earn a
bachelor‘s degree go on to a master‘s program where they further develop their skills in
specialized areas.
Civil engineers need to have a broad skillset beyond math and science, including
problem-solving, decision making, and leadership. A civil engineering graduate typically
begins their career as an Engineer-in-Training. Upon passing a national exam and meeting a
State‘s requirements for work experience under the supervision of a Professional Engineer,
they themselves are eligible to be granted the title of Professional Engineer. Civil engineers
work with the public, with municipalities, with construction workers, and more.
Communication skills are extremely important, as they work in a variety of settings and with
multiple teams and individuals.
As a kid, I always love about mathematics. I wanted to pursue a career that would
utilize my math skills, so I decided that engineering would be the best path for me. I got into
civil engineering because I believe infrastructure is the foundation of our civilization. The
first person to inspire me to become a civil engineer was my dad, who is also a civil engineer.
From a young age he showed me various projects that he had been working on and I was
fascinated to see it as I do it in the future and amazed at how it all worked.
When I become a civil engineer, the job that I prefer to take is project engineer. As a
project engineer, I am responsible for all technical and engineering aspects of their assigned
projects. I plan, schedule, predict, and manage all the technical tasks of their assigned project
to assure accuracy, proper resources, and quality from start to finish. I have the abilities like
great organizational skills. The ability to explain design ideas and plans clearly. Confident
decision-making ability. Excellent communication skills. If I become a successful project
engineer, I should have the ability to work with multiple discipline projects and demonstrate
excellent project management and supervision skills. I should also have excellent
organizational, time management, leadership, and decision-making skills. My role is to
provide technical support and engineering expertise for the effective execution of a project,
the responsibilities can be critical to success. Also my responsibilities will vary based on the
industry, organization, or specific project.
Despite of the circumstances, obstacles, and sacrifices that came across to my life, these
were never the barrier to stop me in pursuing and chasing my dreams. But, it is the motivation
that pushes me to not give up and to remain strong in pursuing my ambition and to prove that
my name is worthy to be called as an Engineer. I believe that if I become a civil
engineer, all knowledge, skills and abilities that I acquire as a student will greatly help me to
be a responsible and productive engineer. I would also apply all those knowledge to secure
the safety of people and to construct a building that the foundation is strong and safe. Being
unprivileged is not the reason to block the desire of your life but if you have the passion and
determination you will achieve the biggest dream you are reaching since the very start.
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING SERVICE
By: Tolores, Christian
Transportation consist of all sorts of vehicles like bus, car, plane, ship, train, and
boat etc. Transportation is one of the most useful inventions of science and technology. It has
brought a lot of changes in our life. Transportation engineering is a field that aims to improve
efficiency and sustainability in the movement of people and goods. The service works with a
due date, and specialists work appropriately.
In past, people had to walk on foot from one place to another. It was very tiring
and difficult. They had to walk for days, some rich people used horse to travel. People could
not exchange the things easily. People were compelled to live in one place.
Transportation engineers prepare, design and run the huge public and personal
facilities systems that link our real world. Transportation engineering has actually constantly
been among the vital civil engineering disciplines, affecting highways, bridges, transit
stations, airports and sea ports and so on. Transportation engineering has actually now
become a multidisciplinary field extending economics, politics, sociology and psychology, in
addition to its core mathematical, engineering and computational concepts.
Transportation has actually constantly played a necessary function in the
advancement of society, initially with regard to trade paths, however more just recently with
regard to land- and air-based systems. It is the transportation engineer‘s obligation to strategy,
design, construct, run and preserve these systems of transportation, in such a method about
offer the safe, hassle-free and effective motion of products and individuals.
Transportation engineers are included with the effective and safe motion of both
products and individuals. They design and preserve all kinds of transportation centers,
consisting of streets and highways, public transportation systems, railways, harbors, ports,
and airfields.
People have reached the moon and trying to reach the other planets. No
development work is possible without the modern means of transportation. Development
equipment are carried by vehicles. Transportation brings the people closed to each other‘s. It
creates a sense of nation unities and patriotism.
BOY SCOUT OF THE YEAR
By: Tolores, Christian
As a civil engineer, there are many prospects for advancement and progress in
this broad discipline. The infrastructure that underpins contemporary society is designed,
constructed, and maintained by the discipline of civil engineering. This covers everything
from buildings, airports, and water delivery systems to roads and bridges. The opportunities
are limitless, and you can have a big impact on the globe as a future civil engineer. If I was
not able to become a college instructor my preferred job would likely be in the field of
sustainability and environmental engineering. I would be interested in designing and
developing sustainable infrastructure projects that minimize environmental impact, such as
renewable energy systems, green buildings, and water management systems. Additionally, I
would enjoy working on projects that contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation
efforts.
As a civil engineer with a focus on sustainability and environmental
engineering, I would likely work on a variety of projects, including designing and building
green infrastructure, assessing the environmental impact of proposed developments, and
developing and implementing plans for sustainable resource management. I would also be
engaged in research and development, looking for new and innovative solutions to the
environmental challenges facing society now a days. Another important aspect of civil
engineering is the maintenance of existing infrastructure. Civil engineers are responsible for
inspecting and evaluating the condition of existing structures and determining the necessary
repairs or upgrades. This includes everything from repairing potholes in roads to reinforcing
aging bridges. It is crucial that the infrastructure is maintained to ensure the safety of the
public and to prevent costly failures in the future.
In addition to teaching and research, I would also be an advisor and mentor for
students. I would help them to identify research opportunities, apply for internships, and
prepare for careers in sustainability and environmental engineering. I would also encourage
them to get involved in community projects and volunteer work, giving them the opportunity
to make a positive impact in their communities. Being a civil engineer is a full time job.
Those who direct the projects may have to work even latter just to make sure the project
meets the deadline.
As a civil engineer there are many crossing career paths you can chose to be a Structural
engineer which can lead to you being a senior structural engineer, principal engineer
structural, or Structural Engineer, Roads and Bridges.
Over the past few decades, our electricity demand has skyrocketed and it will
continue. Civil engineers will be at the forefront of developing structures that consume as
little energy as possible. As the world population surges, civil engineers will be responsible
for building structures that will support us all.
Without civil engineering, it‘s hard to imagine how the world we live in would look
like, but we can be certain that marvelous man-made structures that fill our landscape will be
absent. And as it stands, civil engineering will continue to play a role in human civilizations
far into the future.

My Journey
By: Alvior, Dan Rhial
After that day something really strange is happening to me. I really don‘t know but I
don‘t catch up in school lessons anymore. I became a slow learner it was like my brain is not
functioning it was hard and I was really frustrated. But I always believe that one day I will be
okay.
When I was in Grade 2, my parents decided to leave Pangasinan and we decided to
live in Koronadal, South Cotabato it was a new environment for me I was an introvert person
and I never leave my house since the day of my accident. My parents introduced me to my
cousins and I was really shy. My cousins also think I‘m weird cause I speak Tagalog but also,
they taught me to spoke Ilonggo and after 2 months I spoke fluently.
They enrolled me in Tampakan Central Elementary School in Tampakan, South
Cotabato. In my first day of school I was really afraid of my classmate because I always think
they bully transferees but unexpectedly they were very friendly of me and that‘s when I
started to think that Tampakan is not really a bad place.
In March 2010, I graduated my elementary degree and I also enjoyed it. I also
cherished the memories in my elementary days because I met some friends and I also learned
a lot from my teachers even though I am an average learner. My teacher always makes sure
that we learned our lessons or subjects. I am always thankful to them because they treat us as
their second children and it makes us very happy. That‘s the end of my journey of elementary
days.
In my highschool days. I was enrolled in Tampakan National High School (TNHS), in
my 1st year high school I was very nervous because I was in class section F yes, it was the
last section. I don‘t have any friends and I don‘t know everybody even my classmates in my
first day. But I was also surprise that they approach me first because I don‘t really approach
anybody in our classroom. And also, I always expected that last section has bullies but I was
wrong they were very friendly and very respectful. You can‘t always judge the book by its
cover they said.
But in my 2nd year highschool I was transferred in clas section A because I exceed in
my past class section. I was really surprised on my new classmates because they were really
competitive and I don‘t really have that spirit on me. So, they also motivate me to became a
competitive person. And I was in section A until I graduated high school in March 2014.
My father and I was finding a school for my college. We were riding a tricycle and we
were off to General Santos City. But unexpectedly, we discovered a school in Tupi
and also, I was really surprised because they have the Civil Engineering course. So, I
take the Civil Engineering entrance exam and luckily, I passed that‘s when my journey to
became a Civil Engineer begins. Thank you and God bless.
Abstract:
Transportation engineering is a field that
aims to improve efficiency and sustainability in
the movement of people and goods. In this
article, we review several branches of
transportation engineering that are focused on
achieving these goals. We discuss Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS), Electric Vehicles,
Sustainable Transportation Planning, Public
Transportation, Advanced Materials, and
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. These
branches of transportation engineering have the
potential to reduce emissions, improve safety,
and increase the efficiency of transportation
systems.
Introduction:
Transportation engineering is a field that is constantly evolving to meet the changing
needs of society. As the world's population continues to grow and urbanization increases,
there is a growing need for transportation systems that are efficient, safe, and sustainable. In
this article, we will review several branches of transportation engineering that are focused on
addressing these challenges.
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS):
ITS is a branch of transportation engineering that focuses on using technology, such as
sensors, cameras, and GPS, to improve the efficiency and safety of transportation systems.
Real-time traffic monitoring can help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow, for
example, by adjusting traffic light timings based on traffic flow.
Electric Vehicles: Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular and are being
integrated into transportation systems in many cities around the world. Electric vehicles, such
as cars and buses, can reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. For example, electric
buses can reduce emissions and improve air quality in cities.
Sustainable Transportation Planning:
Sustainable transportation planning focuses on designing transportation systems that promote
sustainable practices, such as walking, biking, and public transit. The construction of bike
lanes and pedestrian walkways can encourage active transportation and reduce reliance on
cars. For example, many cities now have bike-sharing programs in place to provide an
alternative to cars for short trips.
Public Transportation: Public transportation is another branch of transportation engineering
that focuses on improving the efficiency and sustainability of public transportation systems,
such as buses, trains, and subways. The use of hybrid or electric buses can reduce emissions,
and the use of real-time information systems can improve the efficiency of public transit
systems. For example, many cities now have mobile apps that provide real-time information
about bus and train schedules, helping people plan their trips more efficiently.
Advanced Materials: Advanced materials is a branch of transportation engineering that
focuses on developing new materials for transportation infrastructure, such as pavements and
bridges, that are more durable, sustainable, and efficient. The use of recycled materials in
pavement construction can reduce the environmental impact of transportation infrastructure
projects. For example, many bridges now use advanced materials such as fiber-reinforced
polymer (FRP) composites to increase their strength and durability.
Connected and Autonomous Vehicles:
The development of connected and autonomous vehicles can improve safety, reduce
emissions, and increase the efficiency of transportation systems. Vehicles that can
communicate with each other and with infrastructure can improve traffic flow and reduce
congestion. For example, cars that can communicate with traffic lights can help reduce
stopand-go traffic, improving traffic flow and reducing emissions.
Conclusion:
Innovations in transportation engineering are necessary to address the challenges of
population growth, urbanization, and climate change. These innovations can help reduce
emissions, improve safety, and increase the efficiency of transportation systems. The
branches of transportation engineering discussed in this article have the potential to make
significant contributions in this regard. Further research and development in these areas will
be crucial in meeting the transportation needs of the future
"Aspiring Civil Engineer in Field"
By: Alvior, Dan Rhial
As a civil engineer, the field is vast and offers a plethora of opportunities for growth and
development. The field of civil engineering is responsible for designing, building, and
maintaining the infrastructure that supports modern society. This includes everything from
roads and bridges to buildings, airports, and water supply systems. As an aspiring civil
engineer, the possibilities are endless, and the impact that can be made on the world is
significant.
One of the most fundamental aspects of civil engineering is the design and construction of
infrastructure. This includes roads, bridges, and buildings, all of which are essential for
society to function. Civil engineers are responsible for designing these structures to be safe,
efficient, and durable. They must also consider factors such as cost, materials, and the
environment when designing a project. In the construction phase, civil engineers oversee the
construction process and ensure that the project is being built according to the design plans.
Another important aspect of civil engineering is the maintenance of existing infrastructure.
Civil engineers are responsible for inspecting and evaluating the condition of existing
structures and determining the necessary repairs or upgrades. This includes everything from
repairing potholes in roads to reinforcing aging bridges. It is crucial that the infrastructure is
maintained to ensure the safety of the public and to prevent costly failures in the future.
Water supply and management is another key area of civil engineering. Civil engineers design
and construct systems for the collection, treatment, and distribution of water. They also
design systems for the management of stormwater, which is essential for preventing flooding
and protecting the environment. In addition to designing and constructing new infrastructure,
civil engineers also play a critical role in the development of new technologies. This includes
everything from designing more efficient and sustainable systems to researching new
materials that can be used in construction. This is an exciting aspect of the field as it allows
civil engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible and make a positive impact on the
world.
As an aspiring civil engineer, it is essential to have a strong foundation in mathematics and
science. A bachelor's degree in civil engineering is typically required to enter the field, and
many universities offer programs specifically in civil engineering. In addition to formal
education, it is also important to gain practical experience through internships or co-op
programs. These opportunities allow students to gain hands-on experience in the field and
make connections with professionals in the industry.
Field civil engineers are responsible for overseeing the construction of various types of
infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, airports, water and waste treatment facilities,
and buildings. They are also responsible for ensuring that the project is completed on time,
within budget and to the required quality standard.
Field civil engineers work closely with project managers, architects, and other engineering
professionals to ensure that projects are completed according to the design plans. They also
work closely with the construction crew to ensure that the work is being done safely and
efficiently. They are responsible for making sure that materials and equipment are delivered
on time, and that the site is properly prepared for construction. They also conduct regular
inspections of the work to ensure that it meets the required quality standards.
Field civil engineers must also be familiar with construction methods and materials. They
must be able to recommend the best methods and materials for a particular project, based on
factors such as cost, durability, and environmental impact. They must also be familiar with
the latest construction technologies and be able to incorporate these into their projects.
Field civil engineers must also be able to manage and control project costs. They must be able
to identify cost savings opportunities and find ways to reduce the overall cost of the project
without compromising on quality or safety. They are also responsible for maintaining
accurate records of project expenses, and for providing regular cost reports to the project
manager or client.
In conclusion, civil engineering is a challenging and rewarding field that offers endless
opportunities for growth and development. As an aspiring civil engineer, the impact that can
be made on the world is significant, and the possibilities are endless. With a strong foundation
in mathematics and science, a formal education, and practical experience, anyone can become
a successful civil engineer and make a positive impact on society.

devices meant to improve transportation safety, including sonically
actuated traffic lights, colorblind road signals, pedestrian push- buttons, and
flashing aircraft light
Early career[edit]
In 1919, Adler began working for the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad (also known as
the Ma&Pa) as a telegrapher and assistant station agent. There, he began developing safety
and signaling devices, where he was later asked by railroad president OH Nance to look into
fixing the failing electric warning signals at railroad crossings. In response, Adler designed a
system that contained a warning light connected in parallel to the standard bells. This ensured
that even if the bells failed, the light would turn on and alert the driver to an oncoming train.
After the success of this system, Adler was promoted within the company to signal engineer
and was given resources for his own experiments and research.
For his first solo project, he set out to design a new flashing signal for grade crossings. In his
design, he created an automatically triggered system that flashed two lights alternatively in a
wigwag pattern when a train was approaching. This invention, called the Adler Flashing
Relay, received the American Railway Association‘s endorsement and was later adopted by
over 40 railroad companies.
After the success of his projects, Adler left the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad to
pursue invention full-time. However, he remained a signal consultant for the company
until 1957.[3]
Well-known inventions[edit]
Automatic speed control system[edit]
During his time at Ma&Pa, Adler kept a journal of potential invention ideas for a later date.
One of such ideas—the automatic speed-control system—became the focus of his career in
the 1920s. He conceived the idea for this automobile safety feature on October 1, 1924 and
had a working prototype by December 1925.
Adler‘s speed control system was based on the idea of car speed governors, but he believed
they should only be activated at particularly dangerous spots on the road. Adler‘s system
was composed of a series of bar magnets buried under the road 20 meters away from
dangerous spots. At speeds over 24 km/h, this magnet activated a series of relays
installed in the car which cut the car‘s ignition. Once the car had passed over a
similar second magnet, the ignition was restored, and the car would be able to accelerate
like normal.
Rather than manufacturing the invention himself, Adler decided to publicize his work in
hopes of finding a company to license it. He sold the idea to Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
and received positive reactions from other buyers. Adler contacted 600 newspapers,
magazines, and engineering journals, including Science Monthly and the New York
Evening Post, to run stories on his system. However, on December 15, 1926 his financial
investors suspended work until they could guarantee the support of the national
government. [2]
of Charles Street and Cold Spring Lane in Baltimore. It was the first pedestrian-actuated
signal.
Adler left behind many inventions that were the first of their kind. He is credited with over
sixty patented inventions in the field of vehicular safety, some of which he transferred to the
government.
His motto was ―If they can save lives, I want everyone to have them.‖ Adler often donated
his patents to the government free of charge so that they could be publicly used and help

Francisco and California. It was initially designed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. The
bridge was named for the Golden Gate strait, the channel that it spans. [8]
The Golden Gate Bridge is described in Frommer's travel guide as "possibly the most
beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world." At the time of its opening
[9][10]
in 1937, it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, titles it held
until 1964 and 1998 respectively. Its main span is 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and total height is 746
feet (227 m). [11]
Ferry service[edit]
Further information: Ferries of San Francisco Bay
Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what
is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. A ferry service
began as early as 1820, with a regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for the
purpose of transporting water to San Francisco. [12]
The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service, launched in 1867, eventually became the
Golden Gate Ferry Company, a Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary, the largest ferry
operation in the world by the late 1920s. Once for railroad passengers and customers only,

Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. San Francisco was the
largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. Because it did not On February 4,
1929 Adler installed a pedestrian push button at the intersection a permanent link with
communities around the bay, the city's growth rate was below the national average. Many [16]
experts said that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700- foot (2,000-metre) strait, which had
strong, swirling tides and currents, with water 372 ft (113 m) deep at the center of the channel,
[17]
and frequent strong winds. Experts said thatferocious winds and blinding fogs
would prevent construction and operation. [16]
