“What are the chances “Let us keep it as a Truthfulness and
that anyone will find secret. No one should honesty

“You’re naïve—everyone “You’re weird. You easily Sensitivity
does it.” believe like everyone
else.”
“I shouldn’t be telling “You shouldn’t know Openness
you this, but...” this...”
“You didn’t hear from “Don’t tell them that I Trust
me.” was the one who said
that to you.”
“It is better to ask “It is better to act Humbleness
forgiveness than decisively and apologize
permission.” for it later.”

B. Follow through the discussion of the statements in A by answering the questions

here.
1. How would you say things differently to avoid giving the wrong
impression? (Choose one or two statements)
- In order for us to say things differently and avoid giving the wrong impression, is
to first really know how to filter our words, we should really think really hard
before uttering a word. We should really be careful in choosing our words,
prioritizing the emotion, sensitivity and perspective of the person we are talking
to. And one thing that I really learned in communication, the hard way, was that
we should really focus and primarily consider the way we deliver and tell the
message more than the message itself, for there’s a greater tendency that it will
be mistranslated and misinterpreted. That’s why we should consider first the
attitude and manner of relaying the message. Like, let’s say for example the
statement, “You’re naïve—everyone does it”, that’s so inappropriate, unethical,
and intimidating to hear such statement from someone. Even though,
truthfulness and honesty can be valid, but the thought that you can hurt one or
two person with this statement, is really questionable. Words and statement are
created to inform and interact with one another, and not to offend and hurt the
feelings of others. That’s why we should really be careful with our words. We
should all know that what we are saying is not always the message we are
sending.

2. What other statements have you heard that may imply that ethics is
not important or that unethical practices are tolerated?
- I have this encounter in a hospital where I have overheard a conversation. The
patient’s relative approached a nurse and asked about the condition of the
patient, and then the nurse explained that the patient’s condition is not getting
better and he had to undergo a major operation to survive. Then, the obvious
reaction of the relative was alarmed and severely worried. And after that, as
their conversation gets deeper and serious, there’s one statement that got my
head turning, the nurse asked the relative: “Why didn’t you bring the patient
here sooner?”, I know that’s not what she meant, but I kind of feel like that was
very an inappropriate choice of statement, and I really did feel that the relative
really sounded offended. I knew that it was an unintended message and I know
what the nurse was trying to say, I know she just want to mean: “I wished we
could have helped you sooner so it didn’t get so bad.” But I was aware that what
the relative heard that the nurse thinks he’s not thinking but the truth was they
had just not enough money to afford the service of the hospital. So, that was my
experience of encountering an unintended message in my surrounding. That’s
when I realized that it is very important for us to think carefully and critically,
about what we’re communicating to others and to discern whether what they
hear is what you intended.
