GCSE Art and Design Project 2
Theme: Fragments Part 1
You should make connections with appropriate sources
when developing your personal response to one of the
following suggestions. Develop your own interpretation of the
starting points Fragments basing your work on either:
• Personal Possessions
• A room with a view
• Memorabilia
Artist Research and Media Experiments (AO1 and AO2)
Research and analyse Cubism and try out some of their techniques:

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐Your own cubist style images:
2 x simple still life objects using Cubist techniques
1 painted in Cubist style & Colours
✐Copies of Cubist images:
1 line, 1 tone and at least 1 colour study
✐Produce a research sheet on Cubism
Your sheet must include:
• A title
• Written information about Cubism
• Detailed analysis of Two pieces of work
• 3 x drawing studies (b & w and colour) of Cubist
work
• Decorative keywords
• Additional imagery as appropriate

Visual Research (AO3)


Recording line, tone and form from direct observation of fragments of
objects

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐One A4 sheet of compositional studies exploring
how to fragment a page
✐A detailed A3 line drawing of fragments of your
chosen range of objects, concentrating on
recording shape, proportion and detail using line.
✐A detailed A3 Tonal drawing of fragments of your
chosen objects, concentrating on recording tone
and form.
✐A series of photographs of fragments of your
chosen objects

Media Experiments (AO1/2/3)


Explore a range of 2D media to develop your fragments imagery
further.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐Develop a copy of your line drawing with B&W
media. Use different media in different sections of
your fragmented image
• Pen & Mark-making
• Pen & wash
• Charcoal carving
• Mono Printing
• Lino Printing
• Black & White photographs
✐Develop a copy of your line drawing with
Coloured media. Use different media in different
sections of your fragmented image
• Lino Prints on collage/fabric backgrounds
• Coloured photographs
• Painting in powder paint
• Collage
• Coloured photographs

✐Combine all of your imagery using Photoshop


techniques to produce two ICT versions of your work
• A layered image using blending modes
• A Kaleidoscopic photographed image of the first
ICT piece
You need to screen shot your process and save
multiple version of your Photoshop work to show
your development & experimentation and mount
this up on to a sheet to explain how your work has

Personal Development

Personal Development Brief:


Select a development theme from the list below to explore the
theme of fragments further. Use your research on your theme
and new artists selected to combine knowledge and ideas with
what you have learned so far from Cubism and media
experiments to produce a personal response to the theme of
‘Fragments’. Your final work must be 2D and can be either a
painting, digital artwork or a mixed media piece. You can work
on either A2 or A1 in size.
Themes:
• Personal Possessions
• A room with a view
• Memorabilia

For this aspect of the project I would like you to create your
own sketchbook (be creative & resourceful)- remember the
theme is Fragments.

Explore you chosen theme AO3


WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

✐Mind map ideas on your chosen theme. What can


you use to represent the theme? Where? What
objects/things might you draw?
✐Create a visual mood board to represent your ideas-
present work in your sketchbook. Your mood board
can include found images & sketches, with key words
to explain your thinking and should be visually
interesting.
Visual Studies (AO3)
Recording in a range of different media objects, images, places
relevant to your chosen theme
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

✐Make a series of drawings (at least 10) in a range


of media to represent your chosen aspect of the
theme of Fragments: either Personal Possessions, A
room with a view or Memorabilia
✐Take a series of photographs to explore objects,
things, places to represent your chosen theme.
Remember to put these in your sketchbook as they
count towards your marks for recording.

Artist Research (AO1 and AO2)


Research and analyse an artist from the list provided and try out some of
their techniques:

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐Your own recreations of the artist work. At least
one, using similar media to reflect their style and
techniques.
✐Copies of your artist images: At least two.
These can be full copies or close up sections.
✐Produce a research sheet on your chosen artist
Your sheet must include:
• A title
• Written information about your chosen
• Detailed analysis of Two pieces of work
• 2 x drawing studies of Artists work
• Decorative keywords
• Additional imagery as appropriate
Make sure your page is visually interesting and
reflects the style of the artist!
Idea Development (AO1, AO2 and AO4)
Combine your drawing, or photographs, with your knowledge of your
chosen artist and Cubism to create ideas for a final piece

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

✐Develop a series of at least three ideas for a final


piece: A painting, a digital artwork or a mixed media
piece.
Annotate your ideas clearly explaining how the ideas
are influenced by the artists and your chosen theme-
what media might they be made in?
✐Combine the best bits of each design to develop
into a final design for a final piece responding to the
theme of ‘Fragments’. Explain your design thoroughly:
reference to artists, chosen theme, fragments and
explain how the final idea has been developed from
the initial ideas.
✐Make your final piece in the materials you have
selected.
