Total Marks:100

Question # 1 [15 marks]

a) Sketch the domain of f . Use solid lines for portions of the

boundary included in the domain and dashed lines for por-
tions not included:
i) f (x, y) = ln(1 − x2 − y 2 )
1
ii) f (x, y) =
x − y2

b) Sketch the level surface f (x, y, z) = k:

f (x, y, z) = 4x − 2y + z, k=1

Question # 2 [10 marks]

a) Let g(x, y) = ye−3x , x(t) = ln(t2 + 1), and y(t) = t.
Find g(x(t), y(t)).

b) Find g(u(x, y, z), v(x, y, z), w(x, y, z))

if g(x, y, z) = z sin xy, u(x, y, z) = x2 z 3 , v(x, y, z) = πxyz,
xy
and w(x, y, z) =
z

Question # 3 [20 marks]

a) Find the limits of the following and state at what points on

the plane the function is continuous:
x2 − 2xy + y 2
i) lim(x,y)→(1,2)
x−y
cos y + 1
ii) lim π
(x,y)→( ,0) y − sin x
2
b) show that the limit does not exist by considering the limits
as (x, y) → (0, 0) along the coordinate axis:
x+y
lim
(x,y)→(0,0) 2x2 + y 2

c)Evaluate the limit using the substitution z = x2 + y 2 and

observing that z → 0+ if and only if (x, y) → (0, 0).

2 2
lim e x +y
(x,y)→(0,0)

Question # 4 [30 marks]

(a) Let z = (x + y)−1 .

i)Find the rate of change of z with respect to x at the point
(-2,4) with y held fixed.
ii)Find the rate of change of z with respect to y at the point
(-2,4) with x held fixed.

(b) Evaluate the indicated partial derivatives:

f (x, y, z) = z ln(x2 y cos z), fx (3, 1, 0), fy (1, 1, 0), fz (0, 0, 0)

2
(c) Show that the function satisfies Laplace’s equation
∂ 2z ∂ 2z
+ =0
∂x2 ∂y 2

(i) z = x2 − y 2 + 2xy

(ii)z = ex sin y + ey cos x

(iii)z = ln(x2 + y 2 ) + 2 tan−1 (y/x)

Question # 5 [30 marks]

(a) Use a total differential to approximate the change in the

values of f from P to Q. Compare your estimate with the actual
change in f . As well as compare the magnitude of error with
the distance between the points.
xyz
f (x, y, z) = ; P (−1, −2, 4), Q(−1.04, −1.98, 3.97)
x+y+z

(b) Find the local linear approximation L to the specified func-

tion f at the designated point P . Compare the error in ap-
proximating f by L at the specified point Q with the distance
between P and Q.

f (x, y, z) = ln(x + yz); P (2, 1, −1), Q(2.02, 0.97, −1.01)

(c)A function f is given along with a local linear approximation

L to f at a point P . Use the information given to determine
point P .

f (x, y, z) = xy + z 2 ; L(x, y, z) = y + 2z − 1
