 Qur’an is the book of ALLAH ‫ﷻ‬, this book is the BOOK

OF GUIDANCE. This Qur’an has a speciality that until
the Day of Judgement, it will be preserved. ALLAH ‫ﷻ‬
Himself takes in charge of the preservation.
َ ُ ٰ َ َ ُ َ َّ َ َ ْ ِّ َ ْ َّ َ ُ ْ َ َّ
‫ِإنا نحن نزلنا ٱلذكر و ِإنا لهۥلحـ ِفظون‬
(It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is
certainly We Who will preserve it.)
 Qur’an is very easy in every aspects, in the aspect of

reading and understanding, ALLAH ‫ ﷻ‬said in Surah
Qamar.
َّ ُّ ْ َ َ ْ ِّ َ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ْ َّ َ ْ َ َ َ
‫ولقد يَّسنا ٱلقرءان ِللذك ِر فهل ِمن مد ِكر‬
(And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So
is there anyone who will be mindful?)
 ALLAH ‫ ﷻ‬has revealed this Qur’an upon Muhammed

‫ ﷺ‬through Jibreel (A.S). Muhammed ‫ ﷺ‬brought this
Qur’an to the Nation (Followers) and taught us the
way (decentness) to recite.

MEANING OF TAJWEED:
 The original meaning of “Tajweed” in dictionary is “To
Beautify”.
 Meaning of reciting the Qur’an with Tajweed is “To
recite the Qur’an with the points of vocal articulations
(Makharij) and attributes (Sifaat)”.
COMMAND OF TAJWEED:
 To recite the Qur’an with Tajweed is obligatory (Farz)
for every Muslim (Male & Female). Whoever recites
Qur’an without Tajweed consider as a sinner.
BENEFITS OF TAJWEED:
 Tajweed is necessary to get the full and complete
reward of the recitation of Qur’an. He who recites the
Qur’an with Tajweed will be the deserver of the
blessings and will get the highest level in the sight of
ALLAH ‫ﷻ‬
FOR WHOM THIS COURSE WOULD BE:

 This course is for those who can recite the Qur’an,
However cannot recite it with Tajweed.

 The position or the point of articulation which a letter
in the sound stops at or produced from or the place
where the sound of a letter comes out.

originate from 5 places.

METHODS TO KNOW ARTICULATION POINTS

(Makhrij / ‫)مخرج‬:
 To know the Makhrij of any letter, first make the letter

static / motionless (Sakin) then insert Alif with
Hamza before the letter.
For Example:
PRACTICE OF LETTERS:
 Pay attention to these letters, it sounds the same if

you do not understand and practice the Articulation
Points (Makharij). These given below letters must
sound differently based on the Articulation Points.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALIF (‫ )ا‬AND HAMZA (‫)ء‬:
 Alif is always empty and there is Fathah (Zabar َ) on

letter before Alif.
 Alif always comes at last or middle and will not come
at the beginning.
 Must recite Alif with softness and without yank
(Jhatka).
 Hamza will be in the shape of Alif with Fathah (Zabar

َ), Kasra (Zer َ), Zamma (Pesh َ) and Alif with
Sakin (Jazam َ).
 Always comes at the beginning, middle and end of the
word (All three places).

QALQALAH / ‫( قلقه‬SOUND ARTICULATION &

ECHO):
 The meaning of Qalqalah is to disturb the letter that

has Sakin.
 To easily remember these letters, remember the
phrase make up QUTUB JAD - ‫قطب جد‬

 What is Nun Sakin ‫?ن‬

 Nun Sakin is a Nun with a Sakin / Jazm on it.
 What is Tanween / Nunation?

 Double Zabar ٌ, Double Zer ٌ, Double Pesh ٌ is
called Tanween.

01. Izhar – Making Clear (‫)اظهار‬

 Meaning of Izhar is to make clear.
 There are 6 letters of Izhar and these letters are
called HURUF E HALQI.
 When any one of these 6 letters come after NUN

Sakin or Tanween (Double Zabar, Zer, Pesh),
then expose NUN and recite NUN clearly
without doing Ghunna.

02. Ikhfa – To Conceal / Hiding (‫)اخفاء‬:

 Meaning of Ikhfa is to hide the NUN by doing
Ghunna.
 Ikhfa is the total opposite of Izhar.
 The letters for the Ikhfa for the NUN Sakin and
Tanween are all the remaining letters in Arabic
Alphabet after we remove the letters that cause
IZHAR, IDGHAM and IQLAB.
 There are 15 letters of Ikhfa.

03. Iqlab – Changing (‫)اقالب‬:

 Meaning of Iqlab is changing of NUN Sakin or
the Tanween into a MEEM (‫)م‬, when followed
by a BAA (‫ )ب‬with the observation of the
Ghunna.
 There is only 1 letter of Iqlab.
 Given below examples for Iqlab.

04. Idgham – Merging (‫)ادغام‬:

 Meaning of Idgham is to merge the next letter
either partially or completely.
 There are 6 letters of Idgham, to easily
remember these letters, remember the phrase
make up YARMALUN - ‫يرملون‬
 There are 2 subdivisions of Idgham.

01. Idgham with Ghunna
02. Idgham without Ghunna
01. Idgham with Ghunna:

 When one of these 4 letters (‫ )ي م و ن‬come after
the NUN Sakin or Tanween, then apply Idgham
with Ghunna rule.
 NUN should not be pronounced clearly,
instead NUN should be merged into the next
letter with Ghunna.

02. Idgham without Ghunna:

 The remaining 2 letters (‫ )ل ر‬of the group
(YARMALUN) come after the NUN Sakin or
Tanween, then apply Idgham without any
Ghunna rule.
 NUN should be pronounced clearly, NUN
should be inserted into the next letter without
doing any Ghunna.
RULES OF MEEM SAKIN ( ‫)م‬ AND MEEM

MUSHADDAD (‫)م‬:
 When there is a MEEM Mushaddad (‫)م‬, then doing

Ghunna is compulsory.

 When BAA (‫ )ب‬comes after MEEM Sakin (‫)م‬, then

recite it with Ghunna.
 When MEEM (‫ )م‬comes after MEEM Sakin (‫)م‬, then

APPLY IDGHAM RULE and recite it with Ghunna.
 When any one of the letters come except MEEM (‫ )م‬and

BAA (‫ )ب‬after MEEM Sakin (‫)م‬, then APPLY IZHAR
RULE and recite it without Ghunna.

MADDAH LETTERS:
 When Alif Sakin (‫ )ا‬is followed by Fatha (Zabar َ), then

it is called ALIF MADDAH.
 When Wao Sakin (‫ )و‬is followed by Zamma (Pesh َ),

then it is called WAO MADDAH.
 When Yaa Sakin (‫ )ي‬is followed by Kasra (Zer َ), then

it is called YAA MADDAH.

TYPES OF MADD:
 The meaning of MADD is to prolong the sound.

 There are 3 types of MADD
1. Madd e Muttasil (‫)مد متصل‬

2. Madd e Munfasil (‫)مد منفصل‬
3. Madd e Laazim (‫)مد الزم‬
01. Madd e Muttasil (‫)مد متصل‬

 The Madd in which after Maddah letter, the
next letter is Hamza in the same word is
called Madd e Muttasil.
 It is prolonged from 3 to 4 Alif (3 to 4 seconds)

02. Madd e Munfasil (‫)مد منفصل‬

 The Madd in which after Maddah letter, the
next letter is Hamza in the beginning of the
next word is called Madd e Munfasil.
 It is also called Madd e Jayaz.
 It is optional and may be prolonged from 3 to
4 Alif (3 to 4 seconds)
03. Madd e Laazim (‫)مد الزم‬

 The Madd in which after Maddah letter, there is an
original Sakin or Shaddah in the same word or
in the starting of next word is called Madd e
Laazim.
 It is prolonged to 6 Alif (6 seconds)

AL – WAQF (The Stop):
 When the people of any language speak, there are

some places where they pause and some places where
they do not break their words depending on the
meaning they wish to convey.
 The style of the Qur’an is such that there are also places
where one should pause or continue reciting.
 The Arabic word “WAQF” literally means “STOP”.
 In terms of recitation of the Qur’an it refers to the
breaking of the voice for a period while the reciter stop
to take a breath with the intention of continuing the
recitation.
 In order to prevent mistakes in recitation, various
abbreviated signs are provided in the Qur’an for those
who are not familiar with the Qur’anic Science and
Arabic language.
 It is necessary to follow all these signs as strictly as
possible in order to prevent mistakes in recitation.
 The signs are listed and explained below, appear in the
Qur’an slightly smaller and higher than the rest of the
text.

SIGNS OF WAQF IN THE QUR’AN:
⃝ - “Waqf Taam” or “Perfect Stop”: This sign

indicates the end of the verse. At this point, the
meaning is complete and one should stop reading and
take a breath before continuing.

‫مـ‬ - “Waqf Laazim” or “Required Stop”: It is
absolutely necessary to stop here. If one does not do
so, the meaning will be changed drastically. For
example, say: ‘STAND NOT! SIT’ as opposed to ‘STAND!
NOT SIT’. In such a case the meaning has been changed
to the opposite of what was intended.
ُ ‫ُ ه َ َ ْ َ ُ َ َ ْ َ ْ َ َٰ َ ْ َ ُ ُ ُ ه‬ َ ْ َ َ َّ
‫َإنما يست َجيب ال َذين يسمعون ۘ والموت يبعثهم اللـه‬

‫ثم َإلي َه يرجعون‬

‫ط‬ - “Waqf Mutlaq” or “Absolute Stop”: One

should break the breath and voice before continuing.
This differs from the ayah in the full sentence has not
been completed yet and there is something more to
follow before the meaning is complete.
ًۢ َّ َ َ َ ُ َّ ‫َ َ ِّ ْ َ ْ َ ِّ َ َ ْ َ ْ ْ ُ ط‬
‫فسبح َبحم َد ربك وٱستغ َفره َإنهۥكان توابا‬

‫ج‬ - “Waqf Jaaiz” or “Permissible Stop”: It is
better to stop here but if one does not, that is fine.

‫الر ۚ َتلك ءاي ت ٱل َكت َب ٱلم َب ِي‬

‫صل ق ص ز‬ - It is better not to stop at these signs.

‫أول َئك عل ه ًۭدى من رب ـ َهم ۖ وأول َئك هم ٱلمف َلحون‬

‫يايتها النفس المطم ِٕٮنة‬
‫ز‬

‫لقد خلقنا َٱْلنس ن َف أحس ِن تق ِويم‬
‫ج ۡيل ص‬ ِّ ‫َت ۡرم ۡيه ۡم بح َج َارة ِّم ۡن س‬

‫قف‬ -
“Qif” or “Stop”: This sign is used
where it is anticipated that the reciter might stop
otherwise continue reading instead of stopping.
ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ‫َ ٰ قف َ َ َى‬
‫سلم َِه حّت مطل ِع الفج ِر‬

‫وقفہ‬ - “Waqfah”: One should pause here
longer without breaking the breath.

‫ت وقفة‬ ‫رفع‬ َ‫الس َم ٓاء َك ۡيف‬

‫ال‬ - “Laa” or “No”: One should
absolutely not stop here because to do so would affect
the meaning. If this sign occurs on top of Waqf Taam, it
is still better not to stop but if one does so, the meaning
will be alright.

‫لم ي َلد ۙۡ ولم يولد‬

∴∴ -
“Mu’aanaqah” or “Embracing
Stop”: These Triple Dots appear in pairs close to each
other and indicate that a stop at the first makes a stop
at the second prohibited because the meaning would
become incomplete. Thus, one can stop at one or the
other of these marks but not both.
َ‫َذ َٰ ل َك ْٱلك َت َٰ ُب ََل َ ْري َب ۛ فيه ۛ ُهدى ِّل ْل ُم َّتقي‬
