Oliver 181.02 719 126

A 181.02 hp, 719 rpm induction motor is to drive a jaw crusher at 126 rpm; starting load is
heavy; operating with shock; intermittent service; C =113 to 123 in. Recommend a multiple V-
flat drive for this installation.
Given:
P = 181.02 hp
𝑛1 = 719 𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝑛2 = 126 𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝐶 = 113 𝑡𝑜 123 𝑖𝑛
For induction motor driving a jaw crusher in intermittent service, from Table 17.7 FAIRES
(p.460), the required service factor is:

𝑁𝑠𝑓 = 1.6 − 0.2

𝑁𝑠𝑓 = 1.4
Therefore, the design horsepower of the system is:

ℎ𝑝𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 = 181.02 ℎ𝑝 × 1.4

ℎ𝑝𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 = 253.428 ℎ𝑝
from Figure 17.14 FAIRES (p.457), for 𝒉𝒑𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏 = 𝟐𝟓𝟑. 𝟒𝟐𝟖 𝒉𝒑 and 𝒏𝟏 = 𝟕𝟏𝟗 𝒓𝒑𝒎, the
recommended belt section is E-section. However, E-section is not available. Thus, from Table 17.3
FAIRES (p.458), the minimum sheave diameter assumed will be D-section (13 inches). Therefore, let
D1 = 13 in.
Solving for the diameter of the larger sheave, D2:
𝑛1 𝐷 719𝑟𝑝𝑚 𝐷
= 𝐷2 = 126𝑟𝑝𝑚 = 13𝑖𝑛
2
𝑛2 1

𝐷2 = 74.18254 𝑖𝑛
Solving for the pitch line velocity of the belt:
𝜋𝑛1 𝐷1 𝜋×719𝑟𝑝𝑚×13𝑖𝑛
𝑉𝑚 = =
12 12
𝑓𝑡
𝑉𝑚 = 2447.0389 𝑚𝑖𝑛

Solving for the rated power for a single belt:

0.09
103 𝑐 𝑚 𝑉 2 𝑉
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = [𝑎 ( 𝑉 ) −𝐾 − 𝑒 106
] (10𝑚3 )
𝑚 𝑑 𝐷1

From Table 17.3 FAIRES (p.458), the constants for D-section are:
a = 18.788
c = 137.7
e = 0.0848
also, from Table 17.4 (p.459) the small-diameter factor, Kd, is:
𝐷2 74.18254 𝑖𝑛
= = 5.70635
𝐷1 13𝑖𝑛

∴ 𝐾𝑑 = 1.14
Thus, the rated hp for a single D-section belt is:
0.09 𝑓𝑡 2 𝑓𝑡
103 137.7 (2447.0389
𝑚𝑖𝑛
) 2447.0389
𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = [18.788 ( 𝑓𝑡 ) − − 0.0848 ]( )
2447.0389 1.14(13𝑖𝑛) 106 103
𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝑯𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 = 𝟏𝟖. 𝟒𝟑𝟖𝟏𝟓 𝒉𝒑

Checking from Table 17.3 FAIRES (p.458), it falls at C-section, thus, use C-section belt. The
minimum sheave diameter for C-section is 9 inches. Thus, D1 =13 in., D2=74.18254 in.,
Vm=2447.0389 ft/min, and Kd = 1.14.
from Table 17.3 FAIRES (p.458), the constants for C-section are:
a = 8.792
c = 38.819
e = 0.0416

Thus, the rated hp for a single C-section belt is:Type equation here.
0.09
103 38.819 (𝟐𝟒𝟒𝟕.𝟎𝟑𝟖𝟗 𝑓𝑝𝑚)2 𝟐𝟒𝟒𝟕.𝟎𝟑𝟖𝟗 𝑓𝑝𝑚
𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = [8.792 ( ) − − 0.0416 ]( )
𝟐𝟒𝟒𝟕.𝟎𝟑𝟖𝟗 𝑓𝑝𝑚 1.14(13𝑖𝑛) 106 103

𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 = 12.8303 ℎ𝑝
Looking back at Figure 17.13, at 𝑯𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 = 𝟏𝟐. 𝟖𝟑𝟎𝟑 𝒉𝒑, 𝒏𝟏 = 𝟕𝟏𝟗𝒓𝒑𝒎, it falls a C-
section.
Computing for the adjusted rated Hp of the belt is:
𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗 = 𝐾𝜃 𝐾𝐿 𝐻𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑

Since the center is between 113 to 123 inches, assume C=117:

𝐷2 − 𝐷1 𝐷2 = 74.18254𝑖𝑛 − 13𝑖𝑛
= = 0.52293
𝐶 117𝑖𝑛

𝐷2 − 𝐷1 V-flat
𝐶
0.50 0.81
0.52293
0.6 0.83

At Table 17.5 (Faries, pg.459), by interpolation, arc of contact factor

(KΘ) is = 0.81459
For length correction factor, solve first the belt length (L) for an open belt:
(𝐷2 −𝐷1 )2
𝐿 ≈ 2𝐶 + 1.57(𝐷2 + 𝐷1 ) + 4𝐶
(74.18254𝑖𝑛−13𝑖𝑛)2
𝐿 ≈ 2(117𝑖𝑛) + 1.57(74.18254𝑖𝑛 + 13𝑖𝑛) + 4(117𝑖𝑛)
𝐿 ≈ 378.8751𝑖𝑛
At table 17.3, 𝑳 ≈ 𝟑𝟕𝟖. 𝟖𝟕𝟓𝟏𝒊𝒏, the nearest standard belt are:
C360 with pitch length 360.9in.

C390 with pitch length 390.9in.

Thus, assume standard belt number C390 with pitch length 390.9in.
At Table 17.6 (Farries, pg.459), with 390.9in standard length,
KL = 1.23
For computing HPadj:
𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗 = 1.23 × 0.81459 × 12.8303 ℎ𝑝

𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗 = 12.8553ℎ𝑝
Computing for the no. of belts:
𝑃𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛 253.428 ℎ𝑝 /𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡
𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑠 = =
𝐻𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑗 12.8303 ℎ𝑝

𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑠 = 19.7523 𝑠𝑎𝑦 20 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑠

Solving for the new center distance:

𝐵+√𝐵2 −32(𝐷2 −𝐷1 )2
𝐶= 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒: 𝐵 = 4𝐿 − 6.28((𝐷2 + 𝐷1 )
16

𝐵 = 4(378.8751)𝑖𝑛 − 6.28(74.18254𝑖𝑛 + 13)𝑖𝑛

𝐵 = 967.9940
967.9940 + √967.99402 − 32(74.18254 − 13)2
𝐶=
