1.0 Purpose :-
To identify the requirements for carrying out reinforcement steel works
for RCC structures.

2.0 Principles :-
The principle of this document is to ensure that reinforcement works for
RCC structures is carried out as per project technical specification,
special requirements/conditions, IS code provisions, BOQ etc. in the
order of precedence as mentioned in the contract document.

3.0 References :-
Latest revision of IS Code viz. IS 226, IS 1786,

4.0 Materials Required :-

Reinforcement steel as per project specification, binding wire as per
project specification, Shear cutting machines, Rotary cutting machine,
Bending machine with mandrels of all sizes, Cold forging machine,
threading machine, hand hook, stacking stand, hand gloves, etc..

7.0 Stacking of Uncut Steel :-

a. Stacking platform for steel will fabricated and placed at stock yard, care
should be taken to ensure that the height of the platform on which steel is
resting is off the ground by minimum of 230 mm.
b. Steel will be stacked on these fabricated platforms according to the
diameter of the bar. Steels of different diameter will not be mixed and
stacked on the same platform.
c. Tagging will be done on each lot indicating the diameter of the bar and
status of acceptance ( TESTED OK – for accepted steel)
d. In case steel has to be unloaded but still not accepted due to testing, such
steel will be stacked on a different platform and identified by a tag as
UNDER TESTING. This platform shall additionally be barricaded using
caution tape so as to discourage people from using it.

Note: In case steels have been unloaded and the lot has failed test parameters such
steels shall be quarantined and labelled as REJECTED. Arrangement for removal
of such material shall be done on priority.
e. During monsoons the steels stack shall be protected by placing a weather
proof plastic/ equivalent sheet on top to prevent rusting.

5.0 Cutting and bending Steel :-

a. BBS shall be prepared and checked as per latest revision of GFC
drawing.
b. Steel will be cut and bend to required shape as per BBS and stacked
neatly on a platform at the fabrication yard.
c. Stirrups fabricated will be either stacked on platform or hung on a
stand at the fabrication yard.

6.0 Erection of Steel :-

a. Steel (free of surface rust) shall be lifted as required to the location of
erection as per drawing and respective approved BBS.
b. At the erection location steel shall be neatly stacked off ground and
any excess material shall be removed.
c. The steel shall be tied in place as per structural drawing using binding
wire.
d. The following checks will be made during tying the steels in place
i. Steels are clean free from grease, oil, paint, rust, dust or any
other objectionable foreign material.
ii. Straightening of bars is done without damaging the
configuration.
iii. Cutting, bending should be as per Bar Bending Schedule
(BBS). (cutting and bending shall be done without application
of heat)
iv. Vertical distance between the successive layers of bars in
beams or other members is maintained by providing steel
spacers at required interval.
v. Check reinforcement for size, spacing, location, numbers,
overlaps, hooks, rusting, greasing and ties as per drawings and
bar bending schedule.
vi. Ensure staggered overlaps, cold bending and anchorage,
wherever necessary.
Note : This shall be done only in accordance with latest revision of
general notes issued by the structural consultant.

vii. Ensure that the reinforcement is kept in position by ghodies

/chairs etc. during placing and compaction of concrete.
viii. Ensure proper placement of cover blocks, embedded inserts
and cut outs if any. (COLUMN & WALL STEELS TO BE
KEPT IN PLACE USING CONCRETE SPACERS)
Note : Spacing of cover block shall be so maintained so as to ensure no
steel touches the formwork, as a thumb rule atleast one cover block
shall be placed for 1sqm. of area.
ix. Ensure that cat ladders/ walkway platforms are provided on
the horizontal reinforcement to avoid displacement of
reinforcement.
x. Ensure that before placing the concrete; the reinforcement is
checked for bent up bars, lap length, hooks, rings and
distribution bars, etc.
xi. Ensure proper binding of reinforcement (TO KEEP THE
STEELS IN PALCE AND AVOID DISPALCEMENT FROM
ITS POSITION)
7.0 Documents to be maintained:-
a. Bar bending schedule, this must be duly certified by AIL
representative before casting.
b. Checklists as per AIL QC system.
c. MTC Submitted to the client

8.0 EHS

a Provision of platform to route concrete pipe line on height.

b Follow work permit systemVehicular movement will be strictly restricted to

approved logistic plan.
c Safety sign / Warning sign boards will be provided around the work area.
d PPE will be ensured for all site personnel.
E Scaffolding for working platform will be provided with hand rails at mid
height to prevent fall.
d Working platform area will be kept clear of loose pies, loose clamps or
unwanted material or tools.
