CHAPTER: 1

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY

A cooker is a part of cooking and food preparation in a normal home or in a daily

household activity . A modern middle-class economic kitchen is typically equipped with a
stove, a mixer grinder, wet grinder, a refrigerator, and worktops and kitchen cabinets
arranged according to a modular design.

Many households have a tawa, kadai and other cooking appliances. The main functions of a
kitchen are to prepare and cook food. The kitchen may also be used for dining, entertaining.
The design and construction of kitchens is a huge market all over the world.

The pressure cookers are extensively used in household for preparing food. The pressure
cookers have preference over the conventional cooking utensils due to the advantage of
retaining the nutritive value and flavour of the cooked food and less time required for
cooking and thus effecting considerable savings in time and fuel.

It is a closed cooking vessel for use with external heat source, capable of maintaining
working steam pressure of 1.0 Kg.Sq. cm. The full liquid capacity of vessel i.e. total internal
volume with lid in position, ranges from 2 to 12 litres capacity. But in market, the, Pressure
Cookers of 3 and 5 litre capacity are mostly demanded by the customers.

A pressure cooker is an airtight cooking device that cooks food quickly. Pressure cooker,
hermetically sealed pot which produces steam heat to cook food quickly. The higher
temperature of a pressure cooker penetrates food quickly, reducing cooking time without
diminishing vitamin and mineral content. Pressure cookers are especially useful at high
altitudes, where they alleviate the problem of low temperature boiling caused by reduced
atmospheric pressure.

The pressure cookers are extensively used in household for preparing food. The pressure
cookers have preference over the conventional cooking utensils due to the advantage of
retaining the nutritive value and flavour of the cooked food and less time required for
cooking and thus effecting considerable savings in time and fuel.

It has been observed, keeping in view the average family, which medium size/capacity
pressure cookers have greater market. With the rapid advancement in the general living
standards of the people, the demand of pressure cookers is increasing day by day.
Accordingly, there is great scope for setting up of the new units for manufacture of pressure
cookers to standard specifications.

1.2.2
PRODUCT OF PICK & PACK APPLIANSNCE “PRESSURE

COOKER”

Pressure cooking is the process of cooking food under high

pressure steam, employing water or a water-based cooking liquid,
in a sealed vessel known as a pressure cooker. High pressure
limits boiling, and permits cooking temperatures well above 100
°C to be reached.

1: an airtight utensil for quick cooking or preserving of foods by

means of high-temperature steam under pressure.

2: a situation or environment that is fraught with emotional or

social pressures.

TYPES OF PRESSUR COOKER 1) NORMAL BASE:

A pressure cooker is a sealed chamber that traps the steam
generated as its contents are heated. As steam builds, pressure
increases, driving the boiling point of water past 212°F. In
general, this higher temperature shortens cooking times and,
due to a lack of evaporation, extracts flavour more efficiently
from foods.

2) INDUCTION BASE:
An induction cook top is a cooking surface that heats by
transferring currents from an electromagnetic field located
below the glass surface directly to the magnetic induction
cookware placed above.

Unlike thermal conduction, it heats this cookware directly

without the need for a flame or burner. Because there is no
heating of a separate element, an induction cook top can
heat cookware faster than any other medium. An metallic
plate that made of small holes whish observe
electromagnetic is placed under cooker bottom.
1.2.3
PRODUCT AND ITS APPLICATION
Modern Portable pressure cookers consist of all or most of these basic component parts,
depending on the manufacturer and model of pressure cooker:

• Metal pressure container body, with handles, on both ends, for safe carrying.
• Lid to enclose the cooker provided with handle, with locking system that locks with
pan.

• Gasket Also known as a “sealing ring”, which seals the cooker pan and lid airtight.
• Steam Pressure Regulator Valve (Called Whistle) either a dead weight or spring type
device that maintains the pressure level in the pan and releases when it exceeds the
prescribed limit.
• Safety Valves These are devices on the lid to avoid over-pressure and or over
temperature and help to provide safe release of pressure in cooker and prevent
accidents.

ACCESSORIES
• Metal divider with indentation to keeping the containers above liquid.
• Containers for separating different foods in the steamer.

Modern pressure cookers typically have two or three redundant safety systems via valves,
gasket release and blow off valve etc safety features. Pressure cookers are typically made of
aluminium or stainless steel. Higher-quality stainless steel pressure cookers are made with
heavy, three-layer, or Aluminium copper-clad bottoms (heat spreader) for uniform heating.
Gasket or sealing ring is normally made from either rubber or silicone.

CAPACITY
Pressure cookers are available in different capacities for cooking larger or smaller amounts,
with 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5,7.5,10 and maximum 12 litres capacity being common. Higher capacity is
not preferred as that fall under Indian boiler act and requires many safety approvals.

3. FUNCTIONAL DEPARTMENTS
PICK & PICK APPLIANCE organizational structure most common in business is composed
of functional departments that are responsible for specific functions within the company.
Employees are typically hired to work in one of four functional areas of business which
usually include marketing, operations, human resources and finance.

The company in the same period, then they are likely to be working against each other. Goals
must be carefully coordinated to ensure that they are consistent with the corporate objectives
in other words, all departments are working together to achieve the same overall objectives of
the organisation and that the secret behind the successful running of PICK & PICK
APPLIANCE.

DEPARTMENTS ARE:

• PURCHASE DEPARTMENT
• PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
• QUALITY CONTOL DEPARTMENT
• FINANCE DEPARTMENT
• HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
• MARKETING DEPARTMENT
• RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
3.1 PURCHASE DEPARTMENT

PICK & PACK APPLIANCES keeps proper stock of raw material and that helps to maintain
good flow of production activity. All raw materials are brought from north states of INDIA
such as Kolkata and Mumbai.

Purchasing is responsible for the procurement process. This means it ensures the supply of
goods, production materials and equipment so that a smooth production and sales process can
take place.

For this, goods must be procured at the right time, in the right quantity, and of the right
quantity. Our company maintains proper standard of time and availability of raw material.

Purchase departments help keep organizations financially healthy. They procure goods and
services designed to meet operational needs while providing the highest possible value.

They established procurement policies and procedures to ensure their organization operates
with integrity and the marketplace. Purchasing departments keep operations moving
smoothly because they monitor Supply chains and take care of tedious tasks like negotiating
contracts with vendors, so the department has can focus on other things.

The role of the purchasing department plays within a company depends on the size of the
organization. Outsourcing and technological advances have affected the job outlook for the
purchasing profession negatively, which is a trend we can expect to continue.
3.1.2 RAW MATERIALS
PICK &PACK APPALIANCE also consider the raw material as a main factor for the
production process. Aluminium plays a important role in PICK & PACK APPALIANCE as

the process of production starts and ends with aluminium.

Every other product we use has been produced by using some or the other raw materials. It is
the most crucial component of inventory for any manufacturing unit and therefore, managing
inventory of raw materials becomes crucial too. Raw materials are materials or substances
used in the primary production or manufacturing of goods. Raw materials are commodities
that are bought and processed to final good and that are sold on worldwide.

RAW MATERIAL FOR COOKERS ARE:

➢ Aluminium plates
➢ Gasket
➢ Safety valve
➢ Holding handles
➢ Whistle set

PURCHASE OF RAW MATERIAL

Raw material are purchased in bulk quantity in companies and used for the cooker
manufacturing.

ALUMINIUM PLATES
Aluminium plate is the most widely used form of Industrial
Aluminium. We can offer Aluminium plates in a wide
range of grades and tempers including various commercial
and special alloys.

Aluminium 5083 H-116 plate, as an example, has a yield

strength of around 34,000 psi and an ultimate strength of
around 45,000 psi. We can see that the plastic range of
aluminium is considerably less than steel (around 11,000
psi plastic range for aluminium, or roughly 24% of the
material's ultimate strength).

GASKET

The gasket seals the pressure cooker and allows it to build

pressure within the device. When the gasket leaks, your
pressure cooker won't build steam. This component seals in
the water vapour to cook the food.

Two materials which are used to make pressure cooker

gaskets are Rubber and Silicone.

Silicone rubber gaskets are high-performance mechanical

seals with an extraordinary resistance to extreme
temperatures. Silicone gaskets are used to prevent leaks
between different substrate sections in a wide range of
applications.

SAFETY VALVE

The safety valve is commonly found on the cookers lid. This

is done through a release valve, which holds a weight. When
the pressure inside the cooker is high enough to lift the
weight, the excess steam escapes creating a whistling
sound. That's where the safety valve comes in.
COOKER RIVETS
Rivets are small pieces of metal that are crushed into position
between two harder pieces of metal. The resulting rivet holds the
two pieces of metal together. Rivets can be made out of almost
anything, but are usually made out of aluminium or steel.

A rivet is a mechanical fastener composed of a head on one end

and a cylindrical stem on another (called the tail) which has the
appearance of a metal pin.

HOLDING HANDLES

A pressure cooker's handles are made of a type of plastic called

Bakelite, which is a material with heat resistant properties.
Bakelite doesn't conduct heat very well and is also an electric
insulator. Metal, on the other hand, conducts heat very well
and is, therefore, a bad choice for the handles.

The handles of pressure cookers are made of plastic as they are

bad insulators of heat. It has heat resistant properties and is
also an electrical insulator. If a metal handle was used, it would
become red-hot as metals are good conductors of heat.

WHISTLE SET

The whistle indicates to turn down the heat. It doesn't mean the
cooker will explode because other pressure relief valves will
open to release the steam before it explodes. The whistle
comes out of a spring-loaded pressure vent that releases steam
in a specific way—kind of like a teapot.

A pressure cooker whistles when, after heating the contents on

the stove with the lid and pressure regulator in place, it has
reached the full operating pressure to cook the food. It's then
that you reduce the heat and attribute the start of the cooking
time. But not all pressure cookers whistle.
3.1.3 MACHINERY

Machinery is any mechanical, electrical, or electronic device designed and used to perform
some function and to produce a certain effect or result. Machinery does not include buildings
designed specifically to house or support machinery.

MAIN MACHINES/ EQUIPMENT:

▪ Circle cutting Hydraulic Press.
▪ Hydraulic Deep Drawing Press with Multistage Dies.
▪ Punching/ Nibbling Power Press.
▪ Riveting Machine.
▪ Polishing Machine.
▪ Surface treatment tank.
▪ Profile cutting Machine.

▪ Hand Tools and gauges.

3.2 PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

A production department in PICK & PACK APPLAINCE is a group of functions within a

business that is responsible for the manufacture of goods.

Production is the process of combining various material inputs and immaterial inputs (plans,
know-how) in order to make something for consumption (output). It is the act of creating an
output, a good or service which has value and contributes to the utility of individuals.
This can include just a few specialized functions with all other work outsourced, or a fully
functioning department that converts raw materials, assembles components into finished
goods, and packages them.

The production department of this company is one of the largest organisation within a
business. It may employee mechanics, machine setup specialists, maintenance personnel, and
machine operators.

A key focus of the production department is efficiency. To that end, the bottleneck operation
within the facility is closely monitored and supported so that throughput is maximized.

They are capable of developing their range of products as per the industry standards. The
machines and advanced sophisticated facilities further help to provide customizations
facilities as per the requirements stated by the clients.

3.2.1 PRODUCTION PROCESS

A production process is the method of using economic input or resources, like labour, capital
equipment or land, to provide goods and services to consumers. The production process
typically covers how to efficiently and productively manufacture products for sale to reach
customers quickly without sacrificing the quality of the product.

3.2.2 MANUFACTURING PROCESS

In PICK & PACK APPLIANCES aluminium pressure cookers parts like pan or body and lids
manufacturing are the main critical components that ensure quality. The steps involved are:

• Inspection and quality control / testing of metal sheets.

• Circle cutting from sheet in hydraulic punching press as per pan and lid dimensions.
Similarly, the containers and metal divider plates are made by pressing.
• Multistage deep drawing of circles in to pan and lid as per design with close
tolerances. Each piece is inspected for the quality.
• Shearing / nibbling followed by slotting/ machining to form final body and lid profile
to get precise locking profile. These are then stamped, polished, or anodized and the
samples are drawn for final product pressure testing. These products have to adhere to
IS 2347 and relevant quality and material specifications.

3.2.3 PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING COOKER

• The process starts with aluminium disc.
• Generally the thickness of the disc depends on the thermal conductivity, internal
pressure and capacity of the pot.
• Diameter of the disc depends on capacity of pot.
• Common lubricants used are drawing oils.
• The major operation involved is cup drawing.
• The aluminium disk is drawn through an inverted circular shaped die to form a nicely
rounded pot.
• A punch is allowed to make notches in the pot’s rim.
• These notches helps in interlocking with lid helping it to hold high pressure.
• Then an aluminium disk is dipped in an aluminium silicon solution for a uniform coat.

• Then this disk is placed at the bottom disk can be up to 4.5mm.

• Then the bottom of the pot is heated to a temperature of 1100’F.
• In this activities the aluminium silicon solution to fuse the disk to the bottom of the
pot.
• The pot is then cooled by dipping in water.
• The ragged edges are the trimmed off.
• Then the pressure cooker pots are sent to a special chamber where the grindings tools
polish the surface of the pot.
• Then the pots are washed thoroughly to remove any resources.

MANUFACTURING OF LID:
• Three pressing operations are required to make the lid.
• Two holes are punched on the lid for two valves.
FIXING OTHER ACCESSORIES:
• To install the main valve the main hole is aligned with a retaining ring.
• The spring loaded valve is tightly screwed by an automated device.
• Similarly a backup valve is fixed in the smaller hole.
• These valves helps in preventing explosion.
• A plastic cooking guide is fixed around the main valve.
• A rubber gasket is used to have an air tight sealing.
• Holes are drilled on either sides of the pots.
• Handles are fixed with the help of screws and nuts.

3.3 QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT

In PICK & PACK APPLIANCES the Quality Control Department is responsible of

monitoring and ensuring that each stage of production is followed by all the necessary
procedures for safe use of machinery and that each product coming out of the production
process, complies with all standards and specifications that have been defined so to ensure a
smooth and trouble free operation.

To ensure that all the products, make by professionals are of standard quality by controlling
and testing of incoming material, in-process and outgoing products.

The quality department of the company is most important and functionalize. Before
manufacturing the product all test of maintaining the quality standards are formulating in
these departments.

Right from the procurement of raw material till the final delivery of finished products, their
experts scan the range for the following parameters:

❖ Strength

❖ Quality of material
❖ Design

❖ Finish

❖ Durability

❖ Abrasion resistance

❖ Power consumption

Quality control (QC) is a process through which a business seeks to ensure that product
quality is maintained and checked at every levels of process.

In our company the Quality control methods are strategic procedures that ensure the
maintenance or improvement of a product's quality. Generally, these processes include
training employees, creating measurable standards for output quality, and periodically testing
items to detect any inconsistencies.

In cooker manufacturing quality control plays an important role as cooker s are highly
compressed into heat and air to cook the foods , that cooker must be tested with air pressure
check, heat check, leakage proof, proper fixing of spares like handles and safety valve, and
gasket.

Due to our adherence to these paradigms, our range bear a trademark of superior quality. In
order to sustain the reputation for quality products, our professionals make sure that no lapses
occur while testing the products.

Furthermore, it has developed a cordial relationship with their clients in order to understand

activity that companies undertake in order to develop new products, processes or services, or
improve those that already exist. In order to do this, businesses often take on risk. This is
because uncertainties exist around if what they are attempting is technologically feasible, or,
more commonly, they don’t know how they will achieve their objectives in practical terms.

R&D is an essential function for many businesses. Launching new offerings or improving
existing ones is a way for a business to remain competitive and make profit.

When developing a new product, process or service, or refining an existing one, R&D is one
of the earliest phases. Experimentation and innovation is often rife at this stage, along with
risk. The R&D cycle often begins with ideation and theorising, followed by research and
exploration and then into design and development.

Research and development (R&D) is a process intended to create new or improved

technology that can provide a competitive advantage at the business, industry, or national
level. While the rewards can be very high, the process of technological innovation (of which
R&D is the first phase) is complex and risky.

transforms them into meaningful, usable and comparable financial statements. The finance
department contributes to organizational growth by measuring and reporting on regular bases,
key numbers that are vital to the success of the company. This will likely include a summary
of all funding sources, expenditures and reserves available for future use (excluding those
already committed and budgeted for current period) some non-financial information.

5. CONCLUSION

In my opinion internship is a good learning approach for internees as well as fresh graduates
to understand the environment & system of the organization, corporate social responsibility,
corporate culture, norms, and values, traditions, working methodology, employee’s behaviour
and attitude towards management, rules and regulations towards organizations.

It’s a practical work and experience for internees, internship is basically an initial step for
employees and students to know how much we are responsible and capable to perform our
tasks and fulfil our commitment with an organization.

In a nutshell, my internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience. I can conclude
that there have been a lot I’ve learnt from my work, Needless to say, the technical aspects of
the work I’ve done are not flawless and could be improved provided enough time.

As someone with no prior experience with Node whatsoever I believe my time spent in
research and discovering it was well worth it and contributed to finding an acceptable
solution to build a fully functional service. Few main things that I have learned the
importance of time-management skills and self-motivation which are helpful for my future
growth.
