Theory:

Three Phase Full Converter:

The three phase full converter consists of six thyristors T1,T2…T6.Thyristor
T1 is forward biased naturally at ωt = 30o, T2 at ωt = 90o,T3 at ωt = 150o and so on...
For α = 60o, T1 is triggered at ωt = 30o + 60o = 90o,T2 is triggered at
ωt = 90o + 60o = 150o and T3 is triggered at ωt = 150o + 60o = 210o
Each thyristor conducts for 120o and thyristors are fired at an interval of 60o.When
T1 is triggered reverse biased T5 is turned off and T1 is turned ON. The frequency
of output voltage ripple is 6fs where fs is the fundamental frequency of supply voltage
(50Hz).
This type of converter is extensively used in industrial applications up to 120- kW
level, where two-quadrant operation is required. Three phase full converter works as
Three phase AC- DC converter for firing angle of 0o −90o and as Three phase line
commutated inverter for firing angle of 90o − 180o.

Three Phase Semi Converter:

The three phase semi converter consists of three controlled thyristors T1,T2 and
T3 and three uncontrolled diodes D1,D2 and D3.Output voltage Vo is con- trolled by
varying the firing angle of thyristors and the diode provides return path for conduction
in negative line supply.
Thyristor T1 is forward biased naturally at ωt = 30o, T2 at ωt = 150o,T3 at ωt =
270o. For α = 60o, T1 is triggered at ωt = 30o + 60o = 90o,T2 is triggered at ωt = 150o +
60o = 240o and T3 is triggered at ωt = 270o + 60o = 330o.
It is observed that thyristors are fired at an interval of 120o in a proper sequence.
A three phase semi converter works as six pulse converter for α < 60o and as
three pulse converter for α > 60o.

Formula:

Three phase full converter:

√ ∗
V0(avg) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛼

√ ∗
Rms value of fundamental current Is1 = x sin (π/3)

Rms value of total input current Is = Io

Displacement factor,DF = cosα

Current distortion factor,CDF = Is1/Is
Power Factor = CDF x cosα
Active Power = 3Vs.Is1cosα
Reactive Power = 3VsIs1sinα

Three phase semi converter:

√ ∗
V0(avg) = (1 + 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛼)

√ ∗
Rms value of fundamental current Is1 = x cos (α /2) x cos ( ωt- ( α / 2))

Rms value of total input current Is = Io

Displacement factor,DF = cos(α/ 2)

Current distortion factor,CDF = Is1/Is
Power Factor = CDF x cos(α/ 2)
Active Power = 3Vs.Is1cos(α/ 2)
Reactive Power = 3VsIs1sin(α/ 2)

Procedure:
1.Simulate the circuit diagram in MATLAB.
2. Firing pulse or gate pulse is given for different degrees of α.
3. Analyse and tabulate the parameters.
