a. What is a natural calamity?
Ans: Natural calamity is a physical event or phenomenon which may cause injury
or loss of life, damage to property or environmental degradation.
b. How can melting of ice cause a disaster?
Ans: Melting of ice will result in excess water in the rivers. This in turn may lead to
overflowing and flooding of the rivers which may inundate the surrounding areas.
c. How do we measure the intensity of an earthquake?
Ans:The intensity of an earthquake is measured by an instrument called
Seismograph. It is measured on a Richter scale which runs from 0 to 9.
d. What should be the role of people during a natural calamity?
Ans: The role of the people during a natural calamity is:
Organise help and rescue operations.
Look after the injured and homeless by giving them food and shelter.
Follow the advice and assist the doctors, police and army personnel who
are engaged in rescue operations.
e. Write some measures to prevent flood and drought.
Ans: To prevent flood and drought we should follow:
Plant more trees.
To maintained all dams regularly to prevent any breakage.
Water harvesting should be encouraged everywhere.

Ans: A sudden Storm along the coastal plains because of a variation in air pressure
causes a cyclone.

Ans: An earthquake caused when the huge, vast plates of solid rocks in the Earth
crust begin to move, pressure builds up and leads to the land shaking violently.
iii) drought
Ans: If a place is located far away from natural water source, excessive cutting of
trees leads to less amount of rainfall that causes a drought.
