BRAIN WAVES

The brain. The most crucial part of the body, seat for intelligence, emotions, movements, memory
and so much more! At any given point, there is an impetus of impulses, sparking electrical signals in
your brain, firing neurons and finally, keeping everything in sync. This oscillatory activity or rhythmic
repetitive patterns are termed as brainwaves. It is psychobiologically baffling to have radiations and
electrical currents uniformly passing through the brain that can affect or behaviour, consciousness
and senses.

The brain, strings a very harmonious melody with its waves and has a variation of electrical patterns
based on its frequency that is measured in cycles. In a more mundane sense, it has different playlists
that it puts on loop. These waves vary in amplitude and frequency. When you are in a state of deep
sleep, the delta waves appear. A tranquil mood like meditation sets off your theta waves. A
nonchalant, Zen attitude gives rise to alpha waves and a slight pondering state to beta waves. The
most rapid, gamma waves are linked to thorough focus or stressing. These waves are powerful
enough to be detected by placing electrodes on specific sites on the scalp and be recorded by the
EEG -electroencephalograph. This has also been used to diagnose conditions like epilepsy, seizures
and Alzheimer’s.

Brainwaves have a tinge of mystery and freakiness to it as it is common among all humans yet can
vary colossally. It could even be used to identify a person and can be as unique to each like their
finger print. These waves can change the biology of the brain, for better or worse. Brainwaves are
very simple as having ‘aha’ moments, yet complex in comprehending the chemical processes in
unravelling on how our brains tick.
