    3M: Innovation, ideas, and solution for a modern world

    (Case Study Summary)

    There’s no doubt that 3M is a great place to work. 3M Company is one of the mature companies that
    is still standing. The company began in 1902 in Minnesota. They are well known for manufacturing wide
    range of products such as adhesives, health care products, electro and communications products, etc. 3M
    operates in 70+ countries and manufactures more than 60,000 different products. They have the vision
    of “to be the most innovative enterprise and preferred supplier in the markets we serve”; they pride itself
    on its history of innovation. The company doesn’t only innovate their products but also how they manage
    their people. Which is one of the traits of the company that is admirable.

    3M company encourages their people to be innovative. The company’s entrepreneurial workplace


    culture is that the employees have 15 percent of their work time to explore and work together to generate
    new ideas. Lots of products were innovated because of their 15% culture, such as Emphaze AEX Hybrid
    Purifier, Post-It Notes, Flash-Free Adhesive, etc. Not only does it make a good working environment but
    also help their employees to be creative and communicate to other people who they know can help them
    to their ideas.

    3M is known for having various products and this makes the company successful. However, even if
    they are successful, there are still problems. Because of multiple focus areas, they often miss things that
    affect the company’s reputation. Lawsuits might keep coming that will tarnish the company. Example of
    this lawsuit is Environmental Violation where 3M’s Cordova plant dumped, hid chemicals in surrounding
    water in Illinois where not only animals were affected but also the people who are living along the Illinois
    river. Because of this lawsuit, 3M might pay $10,000 or more for each day the violation continues. See?
    because of focusing too much to gain profit from their products they tend to forget the environment of
    the people they are serving. If I were the 3M that focuses on many products that I know are successful, I
    would create a project where the company will take advantage of by having good reputation. I will ensure
    to create no opportunity for lawsuits to attack the company. I will start by properly disposing the wastes
    of each factory. By doing so, it will not compensate the time of everyone and the money that will be used
    to pay all the violations such as the Environmental Violation, which is the most violation that has been to
    the company for almost two (2) decades now. Like if you want to have lots of money, might as well
    eliminate all the hindrances even if it’s a little, right?

    Despite of the violations, there is no doubt that 3M Company is one of the companies that makes
    people achieve their dreams and materialize their ideas. 3M believes that the success of the company
    stems from the quality of the people. They give each other opportunity to express, sell, and improve
    themselves. 3M take pleasure in reaffirming their executives’ ideas and acknowledge their employees’
    accomplishments. By focusing on innovation, 3M is committed to offer more products to their beloved
    costumers. They are also committed to continue their 15% culture to generate more ideas for their future
    products.
