Alviera Estate Sewage

Treatment Plant

Alviera, Porac, Pampanga

1
1. INTRODUCTION
The domestic sewage treatment plant is designed for ALVIERA ESTATE, Porac, Pampanga with
a designed system capacity of 400 m3 of sewage per day. The characteristics of wastewater
influent are based on the designed parameters and expected effluent characteristics are based on
effluent standard given by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
ASPIRAL L (made by FLUENCE Corporation) is a smart, packaged wastewater treatment system
based on Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology. This innovative, well-
validated technology for low-energy treatment of wastewater. It uses a spirally wound, self-
respiring membrane sleeve to provide aeration by diffusion for the wastewater treatment process.
The spiral membrane module at the heart of the biological reactor performs simultaneous BOD
(Biological Oxygen Demand), TN and TP removal, all in a single pass. MABR passive aeration
and single pass flow consumes significantly lower energy compared to the energy consumed by
typical conventional treatment technologies.

2. PROCESS DESCRIPTION

2.1. MABR TECHNOLOGY

The MABR (Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor) technology is a biological wastewater
treatment process that utilizes aeration through oxygen-permeable membranes. MABR is
a secondary (biological) treatment process.

Oxygen transfer mechanism, wherein air is supplied to the process at very low pressure,
saves significant power by eliminating the need to blow instrumental compressed air
through the wastewater for aeration. The reactor is based on breathable membranes rolled
in a spiral, where air is continuously distributed through the spirals to the wastewater. The
oxygen-permeable membranes used in MABRs are submerged in a wastewater treatment
tank providing oxygen for the autotrophic nitrifying bacteria to grow. This biofilm
performs simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SNDN). This enables the
biological process to produce a high-quality effluent with a low total nitrogen (TN)
concentration. The secondary treatment is followed by effluent-sludge separation in a
gravitational clarifier.

2.1.2. MABR STRUCTURE

MABR uses low pressure air to aerate wastewater in the tank while simultaneously
performing nitrification and denitrification. The Membrane is a multi-layer membrane
through which air is passed at low pressure to aerate the surrounding wastewater by passive
diffusion through the semi permeable membrane.

2.1.3. MABR Process

Ammonium in the presence of Oxygen oxidizes to Nitrite and Nitrate by AOBs (Ammonia
oxidized Bacteria) and NOBs (Nitrite Oxidized Bacteria) on the Membrane Biofilm.
Nitrate denitrifies to Nitrogen Gas (N2) by heterotrophic bacteria in the absence of oxygen
away from the membrane. MABRs are especially effective for total Nitrogen (TN) removal
due to the counter gradient of Oxygen and Ammonium.

2.1.4. MABR MODULES STRUCTURE

There are a variable number of modules in the reactor. Each module may be built up of 2
spirals at width of 1m (upper and lower). Future installations may contain 1 wider spiral
(2m width).

Each spiral has 2 inlet pipes receiving process air from a main pipe and 2 outlet pipes.
Outlet air exhausts to the atmosphere.

Each spiral has 2 pipes for condensing water. Four condensate pipes of a module collect
the condensate water and direct it into one outlet pipe for the condensate.

Figure 5. Process Flow Diagram

Wastewater (WW) enters the pretreatment process from Equalization tank (T-00) to Roto Strainer
(F-01) to remove solid particles greater than 1 mm. Filtered wastewater and return sludge (RAS)
are mixed homogenously by a mechanical stirrer at the selector tank (T-01). The mixture is equally
distributed to the Aspiral reactors (R-01; R-02) in which biological treatment occurs. Aspiral
reactors contains series of cylindrical membranes on the first stage wherein simultaneous
nitrification and denitrification process occur. Last stages of the Aspiral reactors contains fine
diffusers. Blowers supply air to the reactor. Process blower (B-01) supplies air to the membrane
while mixing blower (B-02) provides air to Eq. Tank (T-00), Sludge tank (T-01), and last stages
of the reactor. Mixed liquor coming from the reactors enters the clarifier (S-01) to separate the
mixed liquor into two parts (clear water and sludge) by gravitational settling. Clear water will
undergo disinfection using Sodium Hypochlorite solution before transferring to Effluent tank (T-
02) and discharge to drainage. Sludge from the clarifier (S-01) is either recirculated (RAS) or
wasted (WAS). Waste sludge is transferred to the sludge tank (T-03) for solid waste management.

4.1. Primary Treatment

Primary treatment consists of a 6 mm perforated basket coarse screen, an E.Q. tank, and then
pumped to fine screen and following treatment process. Pretreated wastewater is held in the
E.Q. tank in order to keep constant flow rate and equalized water quality before pumped to
fine screen.
