FOOTNOTE TO YOUTH
1. Questions
” Why does the story entitled as “Footnote to Youth”?
The short story was entitled as “Footnote to youth” because the writer
wants to give a note or reminder to the youth or younger generation of
what could possibly happen if their actions are not planned well. The story
revolved on teenage marriage that ended up for the main characters to be
regretful and unhappy.

2. Collect Evidence
Theme. The theme was good and attention catcher because it tells about
early marriage which is a current issue today. An issue that is connected to
teenage pregnancy that leads us to poverty.
Character. The characters’ consistency of their traits gave a good impact
specially the main character, Dodong, who ask his father’s permission to
marry his lover at their very young age but regretted it later because the
same thing happened to him when his son followed his footsteps.
Setting. The setting is the pre – dominant element because it portrays a
situation of a poor family that caught the readers’ attention and sympathy.
Readers might imagine to be in their shoes.
Conflict. There is a generation gap. The gap between old generation’s
principle and the young’s unstoppable desires.
Point of view. The story was in third – person point of view which narrator
doesn’t participate to the story but only to follow the character’s principles
and traits.
3. Construct a thesis
In Footnote to Youth, which is more heavy: regret or karma?
Thesis: “Footnote to Youth is a note for younger generation to avoid
teenage marriage. The note is strengthened by the story and highlighted
the quote “Karma is alive and inevitable”
