One of the most literary influences in the Philippines is a credible short story entitled
“Footnote to Youth” written by Jose Garcia Villa. In which, the story talks about today’s
generation and real life scenarios wherein it highlights the youth, responsibilities, and marriage.
Marriage at a very young age, especially when you are not ready with the consequences
together with it, will give birth to more problems. In the beginning of the story, Dodong was
eager to marry the girl named Teang at the young age of seventeen. In this part of the story, the
author already had given us an idea of what the story will be about — early marriage. There is
also a part in which the way the author writes, that is Dodong’s surprise about the dirt being dug
up and worms crawling out seems like a metaphor, which reminds me to believe that there is
more going on than just soil and bugs. It’s as if little things have been trying to convey
something deeper about life. Furthermore, his father asked him important questions about
marriage, telling him to consider the responsibilities and consequences of his decisions. Through
such details, the author presents simple concepts about youth, love, and the passage of time.
The story of "Footnote to Youth" is both ordered and disorganized for me. I understand
the majority of it, but I am not sure if the punctuation problems, misspellings, and repeated
words are purposeful or typos. I found the sudden change in point of view from Teang to
Her regrets about marrying young and reminiscing about the past deepen the story line. I
appreciate how the author conveys Teang’s realizations while emphasizing the recurrence of
history. This is shown when Blas, one of Dodong’s children, takes on his father’s old shoes,
showing the repetition of past mistakes. Dodong and Teang’s early marriage may have lacked
the wisdom needed to raise their children, which led to a life filled with regrets.
Youth hold the key to our nation’s future. We are the sole ones who can make a
difference. However, many youths today act hastily and aggressively, motivated by their
immediate feelings and sensations. This story reminds us to be careful of the potential results of
our actions. We should carefully analyze our choices before making significant choices and
prioritize what genuinely matters in life, especially while we are young. Once a decision has
been taken, we must be prepared to stand by it and accept the consequences. There were many
things to learn about the story, however, I wouldn’t recommend reading “Footnote to Youth” if
you prefer quick and simple stories, because it tackles deep topics such as regret and the
consequences of early life choices, which may not be to everyone’s liking. But if you’re up for it,
I encourage giving it a shot since it forces you to think about life and the decisions we make,
