Selecting a job of your choice from any organization that you prefer illustrate the stress
causative factors impact to the person and their company.
Stress or occupational stress is commonly defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that
occur when the demands of the job exceed the capabilities, needs or resources of the worker. Stress
particularly work-related stress is a growing problem in Zimbabwe’s construction industry that is being
fuelled by the rapid decline of political, economic, and mismanagement of resources by the private,
government, and general citizens as a whole. Stress affects not only the health and well-being of
employees but also the productivity of organizations. Work-related stress arises where work demands
of various types and combinations exceed the person’s capacity and capability to cope. However
several studies across the world have identified work-related stress as one of the root causes for unsafe
behaviors in construction.
It's important to recognize the common causes of stress at work so that you can take steps to reduce
stress levels where possible. . Workplace stress can be caused by a number of factors - from heavy
workloads and over-promotion to bullying and blame culture.
High workloads - excessive amounts of work and unrealistic deadlines making people feel
rushed, under pressure and overwhelmed.
Insufficient workloads - this makes people feel that their skills are being underused. It can
make people feel less secure in their job roles.
Adapting to change - Difficulty settling into a new promotion, both in terms of meeting the
new role's demands and adapting to possible changes in relationships with colleagues.
Job security worries - Concerns about job security, lack of career opportunities, or level of pay.
Weak or ineffective management - this leaves employees feeling they don't have a sense of
direction.
Over-management - this can leave employees feeling undervalued and affect their self-esteem.
Multiple reporting lines - unclear chains of command, with each manager asking for their work
to be prioritised.
Lack of communication - Failure to keep employees informed about major changes to the
business, causing them to feel uncertain about their future.
Poor physical working environment - eg excessive heat, cold or noise, poor lighting,
uncomfortable seating, faulty equipment, etc.
Work relationships – Difficult or unsupportive relationships with colleagues can become a
source of pressure at work
Work/life balance – Enjoying a good quality of life outside of work is key to build a buffer
against work-related stress
