 To acquire knowledge and creativity by the students in order to gain more

experience.

 To activate the learners because they seen to pay much attention to

practicals.

 To improve on the infrastructural development.

 To help students translate theory into practicals.

CHAPTER TWO

2.0 INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the activities carried out while on IT we’re summarized and discussed. The activities

among others include; Site Clearance, Setting Out, Brick Work, Plastering.

2.1 SITE CLEARANCE

The site was cleared by removing all unwanted objects like machines, pipes, iron bars and dust

from site to avoid colliding with the building lines during setting out of the building.

Tools and equipment’s used during site clearance were as indicated in the table below.

S/NO. TOOLS EQUIPMENTS

01 pang Wheelbarrows

02 hoes Brooms

03 slashers Spades

2.1.2 SETTING OUT

Setting out being the interpretation and transferring of measurements from the paper plan to the

ground, it was done mainly by the foreman who was our field supervisor and then directed us on

what is to be done and how to do it.

The house was a self contained with three bedrooms,a dinning and TV louge ,partry and a corridor.

The following tools and equipments were used during the setting out of the buidling.

XV
 TOOLS
 Nail hammer
 Tape measure
 Lines and pins
 Building square

 EQUIPMENT
 Hoe
 Pegs.

2.1.3 MORTAR MIXING

This was done manually were the mortar was to be mixed on the mixing platform made of bricks in the
ratio

of cement to sand used was 1:3 respectively and healed on the platform simultaneously by volume. The
materials were dry mixed three rounds until a uniform colour was obtained altogether.

A depression was formed in the middle of the uniform mixture obtained and sufficient water was

poured into and then mixed properly until a workable mortar was obtained.

The equipments and materials used in the process of mixing we’re as follows;

 EQUIPMENTS
 Wheelbarrows
 Spades
 Hoes
 Jerrycans

 MATERIALS
 Sand
 Cement
 Water

2.1.4 BRICK WORK

Walls were stretched upwards from the trench in header bond to the level of the Damp proof course.
Thereafter the DPC layer was laid at the distance of 150mm above the ground where the super structure
was erected.

The following tools and equipments used were as follows;

XVI
TOOLS

 Trowels
 Joint boards
 Lines and pins
 Spirit levels
 Squares
 Tape measures

 EQUIPMENTS
 Wheelbarrows
 Spades
 Hoes

2.1.5 PLASTERING

Plastering involved the applying of gauges onto all the walls inorder to obtain a straight and accurate
wall and then workable mortar was applied on the internal and external walls and after the mortar on
had initially

setted, a straight edge was used to cut excess mortar that had gone beyond the gauges and after the

parts which needed more mortar inorder to obtain a flat wall were then filled and after cut with the

straight edge again until the flat wall was obtained.

After water mixed with some cement powder was poured onto the walls and then a wooden float

was passed onto the wall accompanied by a steel float in order to obtain a smooth and nice looking

wall and finally the walls we’re left to dry and then after we’re cured to avoid cracks.

The following tools and equipment’s were used during the plastering.

 TOOLS
o Building trowels
o Wooden floats
o Steel floats
o Hammer

 EQUIPMENTS
o Spades
o Hoes

2.1.6 HOUSE PLAN

XVIII
REASONS FOR HAVING A HOUSE PLAN.

 To transfer correct measurements directly from the paper to the ground.

 to fulfil the customer’s desires.

2.2 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duty and responsibility was only being a trainee.

2.3 NEW KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS GAINED

As a student, I gained the following

 How to set out a building using square method.
 How to apply a rolling brush on the wall during painting.
 How to use a float during plastering.

2.4 WORK RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPARTMENTS

There was a good relationship between departments of mortar mixing and department of

wall construction as these responsible for mortar mixing and carrying were doing their work

willingly which eased the construction work.

2.5 CHALLENGES

The following challenges were encountered;

 Insufficient water in the company.

 Hostile bees and wasps during the excavation work.
 Tiresomeness due to overworking.
 Insufficient funds to cater for the trainees.

XIX
 CHAPTER THREE

The IT was beneficial to me as a trainee as I acquired skills during brick laying, plastering, painting,

excavation among others.

Therefore, IT is more educative and practical’s and should remain on the curriculum of the students

to gain more skills.

3.1 RECOMMENDATION

 The company should emphasize sufficient water within inorder to prevent construction delay
 Safety precautions should be put in place in case of any injury obtained on site.
 Bees and wasps should always be monitored and in case present should be sprayed right away
to prevent stinging.
