Speech On Leadership Skills
Hello! Good evening to every last one of you presents over here,
Also,, I want to thank for this golden opportunity which Toastmasters has given me to share my thoughts
on leadership. I am TM Swati and Let me start my today’s speech by quoting names of few famous
leaders from past and present like Mahatma Gandhi, , , Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Indira
Nooyi , Falguni Nayyar and the list is truly endless. But what’s common in all of them that has made
them such famous and remarkable leaders. It was and is their qualities that persuade people to respect and
follow them.
A leader is the one who knows the path, shows the path, and walks on the path. It is very true. A person
who just guides and you and points out the path is not a leader but a boss. But the person, who is ready to
step on the risky path with you by holding your hand, is the true leader.
A great leader is one who motivates you to achieve success. He is an influencer who is not required to
force the people to follow him. But due to his deeds and qualities, people follow him on their own. A
leader must have a strong personality.
You all might now be thinking that if a leader is so important, then what about leadership? Well, it is
equally important. Say for instance, when we do some work is a group, there is always a person who
distributes the work and keeps a check on progress. He also makes sure that there are no loopholes and
tries to finish everything early. He is the one acting as a leader.
Leadership is not an easy task. It is not for people with weak hearts. It is about having a vision and aim. It
is about being determined to achieve that aim even after having so many hurdles in between. It is about
influencing. It is about positive and impactful communication. It is about having the capacity to take is
the decision in the worst picture. It is about managing with visibility and not with undue power. It is
linked to commitment, determination, teamwork, loyalty, and earning respect. Above all, leadership is
about listening and accepting change.
1. Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership is a leadership style that requires the leader to inspire employees and
motivate them towards achieving their collective goal.
2. Autocratic Leadership
An autocratic or authoritarian leader imposes policies and procedures, sets expectations and defines
outcomes.
This is basically a boss that has full control of their team and makes all of the decisions with little input
from anyone else.
3. Participative Leadership
Also known as democratic leadership, participative leadership allows everyone on the team to get
involved and work together to make important decisions.
4. Transactional Leadership
Transactional leadership uses a model of rewards and punishments to motivate employees.
5. Delegative Leadership
Also known as “laissez-faire leadership”, delegative leadership is a hands-off approach that allows team
members to use their own initiative to make decisions.
6. Bureaucratic Leadership
Bureaucratic leadership puts the needs of the company first and relies on stringent rules being in place for
all team members to follow.
7. Servant Leadership
Servant leadership places the value of the team ahead of the individual. As such, a servant leader is
someone who can shed personal agendas and whose main goal is for their team (and the company) to
thrive.
Now, putting forth my leadership style at which I am not good at but trying my best to improve is:-
Autocratic leadership- For example, if the leader is the most knowledgeable person in the team then this
leadership style can ensure decisions are made faster.
Autocratic leaders are also great at making their expectations clear and directions easy to follow.
And I am totally opposite of this. Because while doing assignments and projects in group of my college I
find that I lack some valuable knowledge and because of this I fail to make any decisions easily and
leading to confusions and disengagements.
And taking lessons from this tasks I have started reading books, newspaper so that I can also cope up
easily with my group members in completing any tasks.
transactional leader
This “give and take” leadership style can motivate employees and increase productivity and satisfaction,
so long as the goals outlined are clear and achievable.
Another advantage of transactional leadership is that it’s easy to understand and implement. Employees
know exactly what’s expected of them and they can benefit from rewards if they regularly meet their
goals.
The reason I feel that I lack this style because I fail to understand what is expected from my
teammates and rather asking and inquiring of them I straight away impose tasks and work (be it
difficult or easy) on them. Thus, leading to irregularities and dissatisfaction.
Talking about the leadership skills I am very good at is Transformational and Participative Leadership
because I like to motivate my team members and people to achieve their goals and targets by staying
positive and hopeful.
My dear friends, the qualities required for leadership are not cultivated in a day. But it does not mean you
can never learn them. Leaders who possess great leadership qualities have learned and earned them with
time
The real essence of leadership is when a leader pays attention to the needs of the followers and work in
the direction to fulfill those needs. To conclude, I would like to add that to be a great leader is equal to
being a great human. To be a great leader you need to have the quality to lead the making. So, start
cultivating them and be a source of inspiration for others too.
