ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS

for SCIENCE Grade 7

Quarter 1/ Week 2

1
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide for learners to develop

their ability in grouping things considered as matter. Matter is
anything that has mass and occupies space.
Pure substances and mixtures are the first two big classifications
of matter. In this learning kit, pure substances are given focus. Pure
substances are always homogeneous and used/found in our daily
lives. It is further classified into elements and compounds.
The activities prepared will help them a) tell a homogeneous
system, b) identify an element from a compound, c) classify
elements as metal or nonmetal based on the observed physical
properties. It is hoped that learning derived from this competency
will be functional as learners apply it to everyday living, especially in
this trying time of pandemic.

OBJECTIVES
After going through this learning kit, you should be able to:

K: Identify a given sample of matter as homogeneous or

heterogeneous.
S: Tell operationally an element from a compound.
A: Recognize the significance of elements by
classifying as metals or non-metals from observable
properties.

Recognize that substances are classified into elements and

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
Discussion

Almost everything we see is matter and it is important to

classify them. Matter can be classified based on the distribution of
their properties and composition throughout the material. If the
composition and properties are uniform throughout, the material is
taken as homogeneous. If not then it is said to be heterogeneous.
Homogeneous materials have only one phase, they are intimately
mixed that the individual particles cannot be seen by the naked
eyes. They appear to be made up only of one or the same kind.
Homo means the same, while hetero means different.

ACTIVITY 1

Materials: 1 tablespoon sugar or salt

1 small stone or marble
2 cups or glasses each is half-filled with drinking water
spoon as stirrer

Procedure:
1. Put the sugar into a glass with water and stir it well until
all is dissolved.
2. Place the stone or marble into the other glass with
water and stir it well.
3. Observe each glass and write your observations.

Questions:

Pure substances are always homogeneous. It is further

classified into elements and compounds. The water that
we drink is a compound. It is made up of elements
hydrogen and oxygen.

Elements cannot be broken

down into simpler
substances. Elements in itself
is very simple, it is made up
only of one kind that no
physical or chemical means
can further change it.

6
Compounds result from the combination, in a definite
proportion by mass, of two or more elements of different
kinds. The water we drink is a compound. Water has
properties very different from the combining elements. Water
is a colorless liquid at room temperature, while both hydrogen
and oxygen are colorless gases at room temperature.
Another example of a compound is rust, a combination of
iron and oxygen from the moist air. In nature, most elements
are found in combination with other elements to form
compounds.Look at the green leaves below it contains
different minerals or elements needed in our body like
calcium, iron, manganese, chromium and more.

Elements can be classified as metals, non-metals and
semi-metals.

metals are used as padlocks to secure our classrooms. These

conductor of heat and electricity. They are usually solids at

Nonmetals are also found at home like the glass or cup

are brittle or break easily when dropped or hammered, non

lustrous or dull, non-malleable, non-ductile and poor
conductor of heat and electricity.

Semi- metals are elements that exhibit some

properties of a metal or a non-metal. Just like
aluminum kettle or “takuri” usually used in
boiling water, it is a good conductor of heat
and electricity but beware once you drop it, it

SYNOPSIS AND ABOUT THE AUTHOR

This SLK is about matter classified

as pure substances. Pure substances
can be classified as elements and
compounds. A learner will be able to
explain that elements and compounds
are always homogeneous. It is made
up of only one kind of material.
After going through activity no.2,
the learners will be able to classify a
metal from a nonmetal using
observable physical properties shown
by a given sample. The examples given
are very localized, the materials
needed in the activity are easily
accessible at home.
Let’s go! Hop in from one activity
to another. You will surely find it easy.
