2. Something that I found difficult in level one of the Emotional Intelligence game was how
often that the way you were brought up by your parents plays into how you would answer these
questions, sometimes making it difficult to answer correctly. For example, where I am from- we
include everyone because we are raised in an area where we do not exclude a single person. So,
for the first situation where it asks whether you should meet your team individually or as a team,
I would have guessed as a team. I am from a small town so our forms of meetings are on a much
more local level, whereas in a corporation I could see how individual gatherings would make
more sense. Something in the game that surprised me was the situation when the office had the
opportunity to gain insight on a competitor. This surprised me because I find many corporations
profiting off of getting another company in trouble or suing them for something they do wrong. I
assumed that this would have been the correct answer because so many companies do this.
However, after seeing the video afterwards about why the answer was to obtain information in a
morally ethical way, it made much more sense. However, now I see why corporations are often
disliked.
3. Something that I learned in the game that connects to the text was the situation when there was
a new employee whose personality was different from the other employees. Many people operate
differently in the way they communicate. This idea is represented in the Hackman and Johnson
text when it states, “They had difficulty communicating with each other because of language
difference, and operated independently” (Hackman and Johnson, 2018, pg. 4). This is often the
reason why personalities have a difficult time relating. Sometimes these differences lead to
difficulties in communicating, like the text stated. Many times, this difficulty creates tension
when someone is standoff-ish compared to the rest of the team. While we may want to dissolve
the tension by simply finding someone new, we will always face new personalities. Rather than
4. One instance that I could have used one of these situations was at a prior profession of mine, I
had an employee who was speaking in an inappropriate manner, much like the “conflict”
situation that was presented in this game. This woman was blatantly being rude to another
employee while I was witnessing it first hand. Rather than getting involved and diffusing the
situation, I allowed the situation to go on- thinking that it would diffuse on its own. However,
this was not the case and it caused tension between the two employees for the rest of the time
they were co-workers. After witnessing the “conflict” situation, I have determined that a better
way to resolve this situation in my new profession would have been to intervene and help resolve
the problem rather than ignore it. The text written by Hackman and Johnson stated something
that seems fitting for this situation, “Effective leaders create a desirable vision outlining what the
group should be like in the future” (Hackman and Johnson, 2018, pg. 6). This part of the text
helped me make a connection between the situation in Planet Jockey and my situation at my
prior job. If i was being an effective leader when my employees were in an altercation, I would
have discussed what we could have done to better ourselves in the future.
