1 Identify and request materials and
tools for a task

A carpenter is one of the most necessary and most used of all building trades due
to their specialized knowledge and the techniques that they used when working
with wood. Here is what you need to know about carpentry.

Every trade has its tools and materials and woodworking is no different. Any
craftsman knows that the right tools and materials for the project are critical in
manufacturing a quality end product in a timely manner.

When one is interested in the craft of woodworking there are many things to
consider including tools, materials, workspace, and plans. However, none of these
considerations are worth making until individuals have the essential woodworking
hand tools and materials they will need to complete their project. Covering
everything from measuring to cutting to finishing, these tools will get you there
with ease. Though there are several alternatives within each category, such as
multiple sizes and dimensions of a particular tools and materials, these essentials
will get anyone off on the right foot.

Questions Mark (/) or (X)

1. Is there a procedure in borrowing tools?
2. Is there a need to fill up forms before
acquiring materials?
What is It

Unlocking of Technical Terms:

Tool - a device manipulated or implemented by hands, as a hammer, saw, chisel
etc. used in a work
Material - a stuff upon which a thing is made
Requisition – an act of requiring something to be furnished; a written request for
something authorized but not made available automatically.
Borrower- a person or organization that takes and uses something belonging to
someone else with the intention of returning it.
Carpentry is the activity or occupation of making or repairing things in wood. The
person who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures is called a carpenter.
A carpenter works with different types of materials and uses different kinds of
tools. It is important for a carpenter to have a good knowledge about the properties
of the different materials he/she will use. This knowledge will increase the
effectiveness of the carpenter. It is also essential that a carpenter knows how to
operate different kinds of tools efficiently and safely. A carpenter's tools are very
important to his/her livelihood. The more tools a carpenter can operate the more
options that he/she has for creating quality work.

Carpentry Tools
1. Claw hammer- is used for driving and pulling out nails.
It is usually made of steel and has been tempered to
withstand very strong impact and stress.

2. Pull-push rule- is a measuring tape that coils into a

compact case. It is used for measuring long, short,
straight lengths.
3. Miter try square- It is used for testing the squareness of material and
enabling lines to be marked at right angles (90˚) and angle up to 45-degrees
or measure up to six inches.

4. Sliding t- bevel- is similar to a try square used for

testing slopes of a bevelled edge and for making
straight lines which are not at right angles with the
edge of the wood.

5. Crosscut saw- it has five to ten or more teeth per

inch that produce a smooth cut. It is used for
cutting across the grain of the wood.

6. Rip saw- it is specially designed for making a rip

cut, a cut made parallel to the direction of the wood
grain.

7. Back saw- a handsaw with a metal back. It is used

primarily in fine carpentry such as cutting
dovetails, mitres, or tenons in cabinetry and joinery.

8. Coping Saw- a u-shaped saw used for cutting

irregular shape in small board.

9. Keyhole Saw- a small pointed saw mainly for

cutting curves and holes.

10. Chisel- a long-bladed hand tool with a beveled

cutting edge and a plain handle that is struck with a
hammer or mallet, used to cut or shape wood, stone, metal, or other hard
materials.

10. Level bar- a straight bar of light metal with a spirit

level in it. It is used to indicate whether a surface is
horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb).

11. Chalk line- is a tool for marking long, straight lines

on relatively flat surfaces, much farther than is practical
by hand or with a straightedge.

12. Jack plane- a general-purpose bench plane, used for

general sizing of wood and for smoothing or straightening
edges.

13. Spokeshave- a small plane with a handle on each

side of its blade, used for shaping curved surfaces.

14. Marking Gauge- a wood or metal tool consisting of a

beam, head and a point used to mark a line parallel to the
grain of the wood.

15. Screwdriver - a tool used for screwing and unscrewing

screws. It has a handle and a shaft, ending in a tip the
user puts into the screw head before turning the handle.
16. Caliper- is a device used to measure the distance between two opposite
sides of an object.

17. Wooden Mallet- it is used for driving chisel handle

as well as assisting in assembling jobs.

18. Pencil- used to layout or mark cutting lines.

19. Plumb Bob- is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on

the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a
vertical reference line, or plumb-line.

20. Crowbar- a tool consisting of a metal bar with a

single curved end and flattened points, often with a small
fissure on one or both ends for removing nails.

21. Nail Set- it is used to drive nail heads into the wood
so they are flush or right below the surface.

22. Framing Square- it is used to mark out the work for

squaring and checking of angles and is used in the
construction of roof framing and large furniture.
23. C- Clamp- it is used to hold together pieces of
lumber while working.

24. Bar Clamp- it is used to hold large boards or

frames together while assembling or gluing.

25. Saw Set- it is used to bend the upper half of each

tooth to one side or the other to form a set.

26. Drill Bits- are used for boring holes either in

metals, woods or plastics.

27. Meterstick – used to measure length. It is often

made of wood, plastic and metal.

28. Sharpening stone- is used to sharpen the edges of

steel tools and implements through grinding and
honing.
29. Sledgehammer- it is a tool with a large, flat, often
metal head, attached to a long handle. It is used to
drive pegs.

30. Bench Vise- it is a mechanical apparatus used to

secure an object in a bench to allow work to be
performed on it. It has two parallel jaws, one fixed and
the other movable, threaded in and out by a screw and
lever.

31. Files- are used to remove fine amounts of material

from a work piece.

32. Paint brush- is usually made by clamping the

bristles to a handle with a ferrule. It is used to apply
paint or sometimes ink.

33. Sandpaper- a type of coated abrasive that consists

of sheets of paper or cloth with abrasive material glued
to one face. It is used to remove material from
surfaces, either to make them smoother, to remove a
layer of material, or sometimes to make the surface
rougher.

34. Ratchet brace- a boring brace, having a ratchet

wheel and pawl for rotating the tool by back and forth
movements of the brace handle. It is used to drill
much wider and deeper holes than can a geared hand-
powered drill.
35. Hand drill- is a manual tool that converts and amplifies circular motion of
the crank into circular motion of a drill chuck. It is generally holds drill sizes
from 1mm to 9mm.

Carpentry Materials

Carpentry is one of the most visible of the builder trades. Quality woodwork begins
with selection of the appropriate materials for the job. Different materials are used
according to specific requirements, availability of space and type of structure to be
built.

Some of the most frequently used carpentry materials include:

1. Wood- most frequently used material. Down the

ages, wood has been used by people to build houses
and furniture like tables, desks, chairs and so forth.

2. Lumber- is a type of wood that has been processed

into beams and planks, a stage in the process of
wood production. It is mainly used for structural
purposes but has many other uses as well.

3. Plywood- is a by-product of lumber. It is made of

large, thin sheets or layers of wood called plies or
veneers. It is used for a wide range of structural,
interior and exterior applications.

4. Nails- are small objects made of metal which is used

as a fastener. Generally, nails have sharp points on
one end and flattened head on the other.
5. Screws - used to fasten materials by digging in and
wedging into a material when turned using
screwdriver.

6. Paint- is a coloring substance composed of pigment,

vehicle, thinner and drier.

7. Varnish- is made of different resins mixed with

vegetable oil. It is applied on the wood in a thin film
giving the wood a transparent shine.

8. Shellac- is a resinous substance. It is prepared before

application, by mixing shellac flakes with alcohol until
it dissolves and turns into liquid.

9. Adhesive- is used to join wood, metal, stone and other

materials. This chemical substance comes from
vegetables, milk, fish, animal hide and synthetic resins.

10. Hinge- a movable joint or mechanism on which a door,

gate, or lid swings as it opens and closes or which
connects linked objects.
11. Drawer pull- is a handle to pull a drawer out of a chest of drawers, cabinet
or other furniture piece.

12. Safety hasp- is used with a padlock and has a

slotted plate fitting over the staple to prevent its
removal when locked.
