Direction: Read and analyze the given questions carefully. Choose the correct answer.
1. Given the relation 𝐴 = {(5,2), (7,4), (9,10), (𝑥, 5)}. Which of the following values for
x will make relation a function?
A. 7 B. 9 C. 4 D. 5
3. To evaluate a function is to ______________ the variable in the function with a value from
the function’s domain and compute the result.
A. omit B. simplify C. skip D. substitute
4. Which of the following defines the sum of f + h given that f and h are functions?
A. (𝑓 + ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) + ℎ(𝑥) C. (𝑓 + ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥)– ℎ(𝑥)
B. (𝑓 + ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) • ℎ(𝑥) D. (𝑓 + ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑓(ℎ(𝑥))
(SLIDE 1)
Let us recall the definition of relation and function.
Relations Functions
A relation is a rule that relates values A function is a relation where each element
from a set of values (called the in the domain is related to only one value in
domain) to a second set of values the range by some rule.
(called the range).
(SLIDE 2 - Drag and drop) Determine whether or not each relation is a function. Drag the
relations into their left in their corresponding category on the right.

|x−6|, x ≥ 2
Example 3. Given q ( x )= 2
x +4 , x <2
. Evaluate the following:
( a ) f (8)
Solution: With this value, 8 belongs to the condition x ≥ 2. Hence, we will be using the first
function,|x−6|.
f ( 8 )=|8−6|
f ( 8 )=2Answer
( b ) f (−3)
Solution:
Since −3 belongs to the condition x <2, we will be using the secondfunction, x 2+ 4 .
2
f (−3 )=(−3) + 4
f (−3 )=9+ 4
f (−3 )=13 Answer
( fg ) ( x )= gf (x)

Slide 5:
5. Composition of Functions
Let f and g be functions. The composite function denoted by ( f ∘ g) (read as “ f
composed with g“) is defined by ( f ∘ g )( x )=f (g ( x )). The process of obtaining a composite
function is called function composition.
Example: Let f ( x)=2 x +5and g ( x )=x 2−2 x +3 . Find the following
1.(f ∘ g)(x) 2. (g ∘ f )(x)
Solutions:
1. ( f ∘ g )( x )=f ( g ( x ) ) =2 [ g ( x ) ] +5=2 ( x 2−2 x+ 3 ) +5
2 2
¿ 2 x −4 x +6+5=2 x −4 x +11
2. ( g ∘ f )( x )=g ( f ( x ) ) =¿
2
¿ 4 x +20 x +25−4 x−10+3
¿ 9 x 2+ 16 x +18
Activity 2: (Drag and drop) Evaluate my value! Solve the following. Drag the correct answer
in the space provided.
1. f ( x )=x 3−4 x +2at x=−2 Answer: -14

2
7−x , x <5
2. Given f ( x )=
|x +10|, x ≥ 5
a ¿ f (−1) Answer: 6
b ¿ f (9) Answer: 19
Activity 3: (Essay Type) Solve the following and write your solutions in a 1 whole sheet of
paper. Show all your pertinent solutions legibly and neat.
Let f ( x )=x 2 +2 x+1and g ( x )=x+ 1. Find the following:
1.( f +g)( x)
2. (f −g)(x)
3. (f • g)( x )
4. ( fg )( x )
5.(f ∘ g)(x)
12. The process of obtaining composite function is called __________. Function composition
