Chapter 1: Functions
Lesson 2: Evaluating Functions
Objective: At the end of this lesson,
learner should be able to

evaluate functions and solve

problems involving functions.
[0.5 session]
A function is a rule…
of correspondence from the elements
of one set x to the elements of another
set y.
A piecewise function…
consists of a set of different intervals
of x with the value of y.

Before you proceed with this
REVIEW! lesson, you should be able to recall
the order of operations.
Example:
4(2−3)² − 8 ÷ 2 × 3 + 1
Grouping Symbols and Exponents
4(−1)² − 8 ÷ 2 × 3 + 1 4(1) − 8 ÷ 2 × 3 + 1
Multiplication and Division (whichever comes first)
4−8÷2×3+1
4−4×3+1
4 − 12 + 1
Addition and Subtraction (whichever comes first)
−8 + 1

Function Notation
The f is the name of the function machine
and the value inside the parentheses is the
input. The expression to the right of the
equal sign shows what the
25
machine does to the input.

Which do you prefer to write?

f  25  OR Evaluate f 5
when x = 25?
Example
If f(x) = 2x + 3, find f(5).
f 5   2 5   3
When evaluating,
do not write f(x)!
f 5   10  3
You want x=5 since
f(x) was changed
to f(5)
You wanted to

f 5   13
find f(5). So the
complete final
answer includes
f(5) not f(x)
Solving versus Evaluating
If f  x    23 x  3, complete the following:
No equal sign Equal sign
a. Evaluate f 3 b. Find x if f  x   5
Substitute and Evaluate Solve for x
The input (or x) is 3. The output is -5.
 23 3  3 5   23 x  3

2  3 8   23 x

1 12  x
 Evaluating a function means replacing
the variable in the function, in this case
x, with a value from the function’s
domain and computing for the result. To
denote that we are evaluating f at a for
some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).
 If one thinks of functions as a
machine, evaluating a function is
analogous to providing our machines
with a valid input.
8
LEARN ABOUT IT!

Evaluate the function

f(m)=2m²−3m+2
when m=−1.
9
HOW TO DO IT?

Evaluate the function f(m) = 2m² − 3m + 2

when m = −1.
Step 1: Write the original function.
f(m) = 2m² − 3m + 2
Step 2: Substitute the given value to the variable.
f(−1) = 2(−1)² − 3(−1) + 2
Step 3: Simplify by applying the order of
operations.
f(−1) = 2(1) + 3 + 2
f(−1) = 2 + 3 + 2
f(−1) = 7 10
2. Evaluate the following function,
where f as defined as: (a) f(x) = 2x + 1
(a) f(3x - 1)
Solution. To evaluate f(3x-1), replace all
the x in
f(x) = 2x + 1 by (3x-1)
f(3x-1) = 2(3x-1) + 1
= 6x -2 + 1
= 6x -1
11
2. Evaluate the following function,
where f as defined as: (b) q(x) = x² - 2x + 2
(b) q(2x + 3)
Solution. To evaluate q(2x + 3), replace
all the x in q(x) = x² - 2x + 2 with (2x + 3):
q(2x + 3) = (2x + 3)² - 2(2x + 3) + 2
= (4x² + 12x + 9) – 4x - 6 + 2
= 4x² + 12x + 9 – 4x - 6 + 2
= 4x² + 8x + 5
12
Evaluate f(x) when (a) x=0, (b) x=4,
and (c) x=2

13
Evaluate f(x)
when (a) x=0
a. Since 0<2, use
the first function.
f(x) = x+2
f(0) = 0+2
f(0) = 2
14
Evaluate f(x)
when (b) x=4
b. Since 4>2, use
the third function.
f(x) =
f(4) =
f(4) =
15
Evaluate f(x)
when (c) x=2
c. Since 2=2, use the
second function.
f(x) = 2x²−5
f(2) = 2(2)²−5
f(2) = 2(4)−5
f(2) = 8−5
f(2) = 3 16

17
Consider the function f(x)=−2x²−3x+4. Evaluate
the given function when x=2x+4.
Solution:
f(x)=-2x²−3x+4 from the given function
Substitute the value of x which is 2x+4
Square it! multiply!
Then,
f(2x+4)=-2(2x+4)²-3(2x+4)+4 by substitution
f(2x+4)=-2(4x²+16x+16)-6x-12+4 by expansion
f(2x+4)=-8x²-32x-32-6x-12+4 by simplification
f(2x+4)=-8x²-38x-40 answer

Note: Group activity

Homework no. 2: solution and answer

By the given equation s(t) = -5t² + 100 (this formula is
based on an approximated value for the acceleration
g = 10m/s² due to gravity).
What is the height of the object after 2 seconds? After
4 seconds?
- substitute 2 and 4 seconds into the given equation.
At 2 seconds: s(2) = -5(2)² + 100 =80 meters
At 4 seconds: s(4) = -5(4)² + 100 =20 meters

 Supplementary activity: Evaluation of functions
Time Frame: 6 minute, June 24, 2018
Note: Group activity
Activity 1. Evaluate the following functions, where f and q are as defined as

(a) f(x) = 2x + 1, (b) q(x) = x² - 2x + 2

(a) f(3x - 1) (b) q(2x + 3)
Solution:
To evaluate f(3x-1), replace all the x in f(x) = 2x + 1 by (3x-1):
f(3x-1) = 2(3x-1) + 1
= 6x -2 + 1
= 6x -1
To evaluate q(2x + 3), replace all the x in q(x) = x² - 2x + 2 with
(2x + 3):
q(2x + 3) = (2x + 3)² - 2(2x + 3) + 2
= (4x² + 12x + 9) – 4x - 6 + 2
= 4x² + 8x + 5 24
 Performance Task No. 1: Applications of functions
Time Frame:
Note: To be submitted on or before August 8, 2020

Performance Task: How clear are the concepts to you?

Performance Task No 1.
1. Do a research about tax rate in the Philippines.
2. Based on the existing tax structure, define a piecewise function that
models this situation by giving
(a) the function’s equation,
(b) a table showing some function values, and
(c) a graph.
Note: Use the piecewise function representing the tax structure in the
Philippines and justify if you think the tax rate is fair.
For example, you can compare the amount of tax deducted from
taxpayers with various levels of income.
Students may present their work through a written report.
