CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEMS

Introduction

The advancement of internet technology, which is becoming more

sophisticated and modern, not only benefits users but also has a negative impact

on users, particularly students. According to study of 120 student, internet usage

will become addictive and more likely to have negative consequences, as well as

less support in learning activities.

The Internet is a vast network that connects billions of computers and

other electronic devices all around the world. You can get nearly any information,

communicate with anyone in the globe, and do a lot more with the Internet. All of

this is possible by connecting a computer to the Internet, generally known as

going online. When someone says a computer is online, they are simply referring

to the fact that it is linked to the Internet.

The internet has been a part of million of people’s lives, most especially us

students. As the world’s largest communication network, the internet also

conveys a wide range of information. When the pandemic started, the internet

became useful to everyone. People use it gather information, research, social

networking, communication, and entertainment. The internet provides students

with a great research platform where they can do research on various subjects

and topics because of the series of encyclopedia that are now available and can

be seen on the internet.

In fact, directly or indirectly, the internet influences students’ lives in many

ways. However, the internet contains some immortality that can’t be ignored. It

may contain false information’s and can pose numerous problems to the students

if misused. Using the internet is fun, students enjoyed using the internet but as

the time passed by, they’ve got a lot of issues, they’ve become anti-social,

internet addict and gained mental health problems.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to educate people about the internet and keep

them from becoming too immersed in it.

1. What are the positive effects of the internet?

2. What are the downsides of using the internet?

3. How can the internet helps us with our daily needs?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The general intent of this study is to recognize the duality of the internet

and its positive or negative impact. The usage of the Internet for academic

reasons and academic accomplishment are directly linked, but a student’s social
life is negatively proportional. This study will point out the internet’s benefits and

disadvantages. It helps you to not overlook its iniquity and how to explore the

internet safely

Significance of the study

This study will be useful in educating people about the internet’s influence

and its duality. This will be helpful to those people who use the internet

excessively. It will help them understand the positive and negative impacts of it.

The study will benefit the following sector:

To the Teachers. This study will help them gain more additional knowledge

regarding the effects and uses of the internet that can be also beneficial to them

particularly in our situation in this pandemic right now.

To the Students. This study can be a great source of information for them to

understand more about the impact of the internet and its dualities, which is very

useful for them given that most of the students are using the internet.
To the Community. It will help them in gaining a better understanding of the

internet’s effect and its duality.

To the Researchers. This study can be helpful to them for the reason that they

can use this as a guide for future studies of the same topic.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains the answers to the questions posed in Chapter I

Problem, and this paper is a compilation of various sources gathered by the

researcher.

The Internet is the most popular and innovative invention in the world of

technology. The web is a place where all types of data can be found, and it is

even possible to communicate using the web. The internet is possibly one of the

greatest inventions of all time. Because anyone can use a computer, it has

changed people's lives by removing geographical barriers and allowing them to

share information instantly.

The Internet's wide and near-instant availability of information allows

everyone to improve their knowledge and encourages self-learning and self-

improvement. The Internet also facilitates and accelerates communication,

whether through voice over internet protocol calls, video calls such as those

available through Skype, emails, forums, or social media. People from all over

the world can connect with one another thanks to these diverse lines of

communication, and the prevalence of social media allows people to share what

is important to them. The Internet also enables businesses to offer their products

and services on a national and international scale, thereby improving trade and

economics.

As the electrical engine was the vector of technological transformation in

the Industrial Age, the Internet is the decisive technology of the Information Age.

This global network of computer networks, which is largely based on wireless

communication platforms nowadays, provides ubiquitous capacity for multimodal,

interactive communication in chosen time and space.

There is a significant increase in sociability, but it is a different kind of

sociability, facilitated and dynamized by constant connectivity and social

networking on the internet.

Based on data released by Facebook at the time (now defunct), we know

that in 2009, users spent 500 billion minutes per month. This isn't just about

friendship or interpersonal communication. People do things together, share, and

act, just like in society, though the personal dimension is always present. Thus, in

the United States, 38% of adults share content, 21% remix, and 14% blog, and

this is increasing exponentially with the advancement of technology, software,

and SNS entrepreneurial initiatives.

In 2009, the average Facebook user was connected to 60 pages, groups,

and events; people interacted with 160 million objects (pages, groups, and

events) per month; the average user created 70 pieces of content per month; and

25 billion pieces of content were shared per month (web links, news stories,

blogs posts, notes, photos). SNS are living spaces that connect all aspects of

people's lives.

This transforms culture by allowing people to share their experiences at a

low emotional cost while conserving energy and effort. They transcend time and

space while producing content, establishing links, and connecting practices. In

every aspect of human experience, the world is constantly networked. They co-

evolve in a constant, multi-faceted interaction. They, however, choose the terms

of their co-evolution.
As a result, people continue to live their physical lives while increasingly

connecting on multiple dimensions in SNS.

Paradoxically, virtual life is more social than physical life, which is now

individualized by work and urban living. Because people are becoming more

comfortable with the web's multi textuality and multidimensionality, marketers,

work organizations, service agencies, government, and civil society are migrating

massively to the Internet, less and less setting up alternative sites, and more and

more being present in the networks that people construct by themselves and for

themselves, with the help of Internet social networking entrepreneurs, some of

whom become billionaires in the process.

society/)

Although the Internet is one of man's greatest accomplishments, it has

several drawbacks. Many teenagers are affected by Internet Addiction Disorder,

and as a result, many women have become online shopaholics.

The Internet provides advantages for consumers to make purchases,

allowing users to buy products on a regular basis without giving much thought to

whether they should. During the third quarter of 2021, 62.5 percent of Filipino

respondents said they bought a product or service online. Others purchased

groceries from an online retailer. Furthermore, some people can become

addicted to purchasing items on the Internet, which can lead to serious debt.

Internet addiction is harmful not only to one's physical fitness but also to

one's mental health. The prevalence of internet addiction is estimated to be 6%

worldwide. This is concerning, given that only about 39% of the world's

population has access to the internet. Internet addiction and problematic internet

use A lack of control over one's internet consumption can lead to a decrease in

physical and psychological well-being, with symptoms such as distress, anger,

loss of control, social withdrawal, familial conflicts, and others pushing people

into isolation. The sites have the instant gratification effect that we are

accustomed to when using the Internet. On-demand, they also provide a large

menu of things to experience and think about at any time. This method of

gathering information can have an impact on your interactions, making you more

impatient and less focused on your tasks.

The Internet can also contribute to depression because many people use

social networking sites to compare their lives to those of others. Users of social

networking sites can make thousands of friends and communicate with them.

There are also online games that allow players to communicate with one another.

Although social networking sites can help you make new friends from all over the

world, you may find yourself estranged from your real-life friends. During the

pandemic, the prevalence of social isolation increased by 6.7 (6.3-7.0)

percentage points. The prevalence of social isolation increased the most in older

people and men.

Although some may argue that prioritizing social isolation as a health

issue will divert scarce resources away from more pressing issues (such as

addiction, violence, and poverty), addressing social isolation and loneliness may

help us address these and other concerns. Without awareness, time spent online

flies by. After being drawn into the trap, users are trapped by a "net," spending

less time with people in the real world. In fact, less interaction and face-to-face

communication may result in a decline in social abilities.

Cyber Criminality. A hacker creates a virus that infects the computer and

destroys valuable data. When using the web, perpetrators frequently access

users' personal information such as name, address, master card, bank details,
and other information, resulting in significant economic loss. Every half-minute,

hackers attack people all over the world. According to internet security statistics,

this corresponds to a cybercrime being committed an average of 2,244 times per

day. Smaller organizations (1–250 employees) have the highest rate of targeted

malicious email (1 in 323). Myanmar has the lowest internet safety rating, with a

score of 2.22 on SEON's Global Cyber-Safety Index. The country received a low

overall score, particularly in terms of legislation, as few have been implemented

to put barriers in the way of cybercriminals.

The Internet's impact on our lives is undeniable and cannot be overstated.

It is used in almost every aspect of business. How difficult our lives would have

been if the Internet did not exist. Consider this. To find information, we have all

developed the habit of 'Googling' it on the internet; the screen displays the

desired information within a few seconds. Many of us can't imagine our lives

without social media sites. The Internet has indeed receded the world and made

life easier. And, thanks to the rapid advancement of technology, it is now

possible to connect to the Internet from anywhere using a variety of methods. It

has so many applications that we use it for one or more of them on a daily basis.

The use of the Internet for networking is extremely popular among people of all

ages. There are numerous good social networking websites that people use for

communication.
These websites provide an effective and simple platform for interaction. It

is widely used as a means of communication via websites such as networking

websites, chat websites, blogs, and so on. You can also share your photographs

with your friends and family using these websites. Job seekers frequently use it

for job applications and job searching. Interviews can now be conducted online

thanks to technological advances such as video conferencing.

Another common application of the Internet is for entertainment. Listening

to online music, downloading music and movies, and other entertainment options

provide a platform. You can keep yourself entertained in a variety of other ways.

You can play online games, watch sporting events, or watch videos of your

choosing. It is a reliable source of entertainment for these purposes and is widely

used in this capacity.

With over 4.5 billion internet users worldwide, one of the most popular

activities among users is watching online videos and entertainment. Visual

content is increasingly appealing to today's internet generation. Both long and

short videos receive millions, if not billions, of views. YouTube has broken

several records in recent years, including the children's song "Baby Shark," the

reggaeton hit "Despacito," and Korean singer Psy's "Gangnam Style." Online
videos, in addition to entertainment, provide tutorials, educational content,

presentations, product reviews, and vlogs.

Despite the fact that online video and entertainment are popular across all

generations, young people spend hours each week watching. As of August 2020,

nearly 17% of internet users aged 18 to 25 spend more than 20 hours per week

watching videos online. Leading platforms like YouTube and Vimeo are attracting

an increasing number of users, with YouTube expected to have nearly 2.85

billion global users by 2025. News, sports, and watching someone play video

games are all popular types of video content. The content that viewers spent the

most time on, however, were movies and TV shows.

As of August 2020, these two types of digital video content received 4.5

and 4.6 hours of weekly attention, respectively. Different tastes in device usage

can be seen in different countries. While the majority of respondents in the

United States prefer smartphones, users in some European countries prefer

smart TVs. YouTube and Vimeo, as well as TikTok, are leaders in the online

video and entertainment industry, and their genres and themes vary. While

YouTube allows users to choose between a free version with advertisements and

an ad-free premium subscription, Vimeo provides a completely ad-free and free

video sharing experience. Vimeo makes money by providing software as a

service, video editing software, and creation tools. TikTok, on the other hand,

focuses on shorter videos and is free to use. TikTok is another platform that is

particularly popular among teenagers and young adults. The number of daily

active users peaked in March 2020, following the COVID-19 pandemic, when

people spent more time at home and were in need of entertainment.

TikTok attracts millions of users every day with social media challenges,

food content, dance videos, and influencer collaborations. Charli D'Amelio's

channel has millions of followers. The internet has had a significant impact on the

entertainment industry. It has altered the way entertainment is perceived,

consumed, and received. Many years ago, entertainment was mostly consumed

in real time and in person. Because of the internet, we can now watch things live

as well as watch replays of entertainment. This, like everything else, has far-

reaching implications for the entertainment industry and has aided artists all over

the world.

As a result, it has paved the way for the emergence of new sub-genres of

entertainment. The internet is a fantastic source of entertainment, with 51.5

percent of the world's population using it to watch videos, TV shows, and movies.

In fact, the coronavirus pandemic has increased demand for video streaming

services over the last two years.

Many students use the internet for educational purposes, such as finding

study materials or applying to colleges and universities. It is now a virtual world,

and all applications are submitted online via the website of the relevant

educational body. Students use websites for these and many other purposes,

such as checking exam results, exam schedules, applying to any course, and so

on. Students also use the Internet for project assistance and to obtain the

necessary images. Everything is just a mouse click away. According to the most

recent Pew Internet Project survey, 87 percent of all youth aged 12 to 17 use the

internet. This equates to approximately 21 million people. 78 percent (or

approximately 16 million students) of those 21 million online teens say they use

the internet at school.

According to the American Community Survey (ACS),1 prior to the

Coronavirus Pandemic, the higher the level of parental educational attainment,

the higher the percentage of 3- to 18-year-olds with home internet access in

2019. For example, the percentage of those with home internet access was

highest for those whose parents had a bachelor's or higher degree (99%) and

lowest for those whose parents had less than a high school diploma (83%).

During the Coronavirus Pandemic, as students flocked to online learning in

droves, having access to internet-connected devices became a requirement for

students to participate effectively in their new learning environments. According

to the pre-pandemic data, not all students would have been able to take

advantage of these remote classrooms, and this would be true for a higher

percentage of students whose parents had lower incomes or lower levels of

educational attainment. Online learning allows teachers to deliver lessons to

students in a more efficient manner.

Online learning includes a variety of tools such as videos, PDFs, and podcasts,

which teachers can incorporate into their lesson plans. Teachers can become

more efficient educators by expanding the lesson plan beyond traditional

textbooks to include online resources.

The internet has the potential to significantly improve educational quality in

a variety of ways. It provides access to a wealth of information, knowledge, and

educational resources, expanding opportunities for learning both inside and

outside the classroom. Access to the internet provides access to a wealth of

information, knowledge, and educational resources. Without a doubt, the Internet

has enormous potential to improve educational quality, which is one of the pillars

of sustainable development. While it is important to remember that the Internet is

not the solution to every educational challenge, it can help to unlock human

capabilities that can improve learning and teaching.

Chapter III

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND ROCOMMENDATION

SUMMARY

The Internet is a global network of computer networks that is mostly built

on wireless communication platforms. The first study of Internet users counted

around 40 million in 1996; by 2013, the number has risen to over 2.5 billion. The

Internet allows for the creation, dissemination, and use of digitized data in any

format. We study the relationship between the Internet and society in Internet

Studies. People who are more sociable use the Internet more and have more

civic engagement, family and friendship interactions. There is no correlation

between Internet use and sociability, nor is there a positive cumulative link. In the

words of Thiel de Sola Pool, the Internet is a technology of liberty. It arose from a

libertarian culture that was, ironically, funded by the Pentagon. It sprang out of a

libertarian culture that was, ironically, funded by the Pentagon for the benefit of

scientists, engineers, and students. From the mid-1990s forward, three major

themes drove the growth of the Internet. Ours is a network civilization, built on
the foundation of personal and organizational networks fueled by digital

networks. The interplay of the digital revolution and sociocultural developments

resulted in this historically distinct social structure. Through a search for like-

minded people, sociability is recreated as networked individualism and

community. According to academic studies, the Internet does not isolate people

or make them less sociable. People feel more secure, have more influence when

they utilize the internet. The effect is especially beneficial for persons with lower

incomes and less education.

CONCLUSION

Based from the data gathered, the researchers conclude that internet is

one of the most useful technologies in our society, The Internet has touched the

lives of millions of individuals, most notably us students. The internet, as the

world's greatest communication network, also transmits a vast range of data. We

are Glad especially for us student that internet has invented in our society,

because it can make our life easier. The internet made a big impact in our life

especially the life of being a student. But that is just the positive impacts of the

internet, internet has both positive and negative impacts, The Downside of the

internet are easy availability of illegal or inappropriate materials online that isn’t

age-suitable. Addiction to social networks can disrupt an individual’s life, both

personally and professionally. Some miscreants use the internet to hack into

people’s accounts for spurious activities including stealing data or banking

information. When we are using social media, we shouldn't immediately believe

what we see because there is news that has been spread but it's not true, or we

call it "fake news". We must control ourselves that we should not be addicted to

social media. The Internet, like all technologies, does not generate effects on its

own. However, it has specific effects in changing the communication system's

capacity to be organized around flows that are interactive, multimodal,

asynchronous or synchronous, global or local, and from many to many, people to

people, people to objects, and objects to objects, increasingly relying on the

semantic web. Research must be conducted to determine how these

characteristics affect specific systems of social relationships. What is clear is that

without the Internet, we would not have seen the widespread adoption of

networking as a fundamental mechanism of social structuring and social change

in every domain of social life. The Internet, the World Wide Web, and a variety of

networks increasingly based on wireless platforms comprise the network

society's technological infrastructure, just as the electrical grid and the electrical

engine were the support systems for the form of social organization that we

defined as the industrial society. As a social construction, this technological

system is thus open-ended, just as the network society is an open-ended form of

social organization that conveys the best and worst of humanity. Nonetheless,

the global network society is our society, and understanding its logic through the

interaction of culture, organization, and technology in the formation and

development of social and technological networks is a critical field of research in

the twenty-first century. Only through the collective effort of scholarly research
can we make progress in our understanding. Only then will we be able to dispel

the myths surrounding our defining technology. A digital communication

technology that has already become a second skin for young people, yet it

continues to feed the fears and fantasies of those who are still in charge of a

society that they barely comprehend.

The internet has been ingrained in every area of our daily lives, altering the way

we engage with others, particularly social media, which allows us to stay in touch

with people on a real-time basis. The internet has offered us a plethora of

communication opportunities that have become intimately woven into our daily

lives. The internet has had a significant impact on all levels of education by giving

limitless learning opportunities. People can utilize the internet to generate and

share knowledge, as well as to design innovative teaching methods that

fascinate and stimulate students' imaginations, at any time, on any device. The

internet is an endless supply of knowledge that is extremely beneficial to people.

As a result, the researchers came to the conclusion that the internet's impact and

rapid development has a wide range of effects on people.

RECOMMENDATION

The study shows how the internet has been great influence on the

academic performances of the students. However, the uses of the internet

depend on the respective study context in terms of available accessibility of the

internet and affordability of the users, also the side of the internet that shows the

contents that are not age suitable and a scam. Therefore, the researchers

recommend that. Always lookout for social media scams like fake profiles,

catfishing, gossip clickbait, job offer scams and fake online scams. Always check

the validity of a website before allowing it to access your personal information.

Never click on suspicious links, and don’t fill out online forms unless the website

is legitimate and secure. Utilize passwords and other security options like

fingerprint readers and face scanning technology. Enable two-factor

authentication in order to prevent hackers from accessing your personal

accounts and information. Limit technology use to avoid addiction. Use an app

like Apple’s Screen Time to monitor and restrict phone, tablet and computer use.

Similar apps exist for Android phones and other devices.
